"A New Hope" Star Wars Celebration League

By kirkzmyth, in X-Wing Squad Lists

My FLGS runs a league that I've been attending every Wednesday night. Each month, they offer "incentives" for players who mix it up and build their squadron "on theme".

This month (starting Wednesday), we are trying to use only ships and characters from the original trilogy, adding each movie each week. This week will be the most limiting, using only ships and characters from "A New Hope."

From a little bit of Wookiepedia research, as well as some bits and pieces picked up from elsewhere, I have come up with this list of acceptable ships and pilots/ crew:

Ships:

TIE Advanced

TIE Fighter

X-Wing T-65B

Y-Wing (BTL-A4)

YT-1300 (Millenium Falcon)

Pilots and Crew:

Rebel:

Han Solo

Chewbacca

Luke Skywalker

Biggs Darklighter

Wedge Antilles

Leia Organa

C-3PO

R2-D2

Red Squadron pilots

Gold Squadron pilots

Imperial:

Darth Vader

"Backstabber"

"Dark Curse"

"Mauler" Mithel

Black Squadron Pilots

Generic Pilots are generally going to be accepted, but this list is what I see as official and "on theme". Upgrades other than Crew are unrestricted, as far as I know.

My questions are as follows:

1. Are there any other ships and pilots that "make an appearance" (which can mean they were in the events of the movie, even if they didn't get direct screentime)?

and

2. What kind of list suggestions does the community at large have that fit these restrictions?

Dutch Vander and Horton Salm were both Y-Wing Pilots at the Death Star Run, so you can use them. Other X-Wing Pilots who flew at Yavin include Garven Dreis and Jek Porkins. I'm not as sure about other Imperials.

As for lists, I'm largely a rebel player, so I would put this forward:

Han Solo (Original)

Evade Title

Expertise

C-3PO

Hot-Shot Co-Pilot

Engine Upgrade

Wedge Antilles

PTL

BB-8

Engine Upgrade

Use Han to token strip for Wedge. Wedge should be trying to avoid getting shot at all, and Han should evade unless he is 100% certain that his boost can dodge an arc.

BB8 is cute and all but belongs about 30+ years ABY.

Well I mean he didn't say Astros were restricted, only ships, crew, pilots

If astros are also restricted, I'd fly Wedge with Expertise, R2-D2, and Vectored Thrusters, and ditch HSCP off Han, adding on your choice of crew

Doesn't get much more thematic than that. Not sure if Astros are restricted, hence why Biggs has an R7. If they aren't, the tank droid is a much better option.

You would want to Joust with this list. Luke is incredibly tanky, and is your late-game mop up. Wedge is your hard-hitter and NEEDS to keep close to Biggs, who Biggs things.

One of my favorite lists right now is this, so that's what I would bring. Obviously this is similar to Drakeheart's list.

X-Wing: Luke Skywalker (28)
Expertise (4)
R2-D2 (4)
Integrated Astromech (0)
X-Wing: Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-F2 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)
X-Wing: Wedge Antilles (29)
Expertise (4)
R5-P9 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)
Total: 100 Points

I like to fly them initially in formation and then try to break off Biggs after he takes a few hits but is still alive. Wedge and Luke then take a few hits and bring Biggs back in a few turns later. Wedge/Luke get a breather to regen before Biggs dies. If they chase Biggs when he breaks off, all the better as you get behind them with Wedge/Luke. If you're facing all "A New Hope" ships you're going to be facing a lot of limited attack dice / high evade Imperials and moderate attack dice / limited evade rebels, so this strategy can work.

It obviously won't work as well if you're facing some highly maneuverable high alpha strike opponents, or if you're taking a lot of stress as it will block Expertise and prevent Wedge from regenning, but I'm still relatively new to the game so what do I know :P .

Wow! Thanks for all the responses and great ideas!

I'm going to go share this link with others in my league.

Thanks again, everyone!

Just a thought: Expertise Luke can be quite tough!! Throw vectored thrusters and you have a t-65 that can do a lil dodge, hit like "a large sedan" (everyone always says truck, but his 3 dice aren't that amazing :) ) and can be fairly tanky with R2-D2.

Lambda shuttle wasn't in A New Hope. It first appeared in Return of the Jedi, though Lucas added it into Empire Strikes Back in one of the rereleases.

ST-321 Villian Dance was "In the events of the movie, but not onscreen" according to wookiepedia, as a member of Black squadron. (black 11)

Or you can pick up Backstabber and Dark Curse instead.
