Army boxes and Accessibility

By Entos1, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I wanted to use this post to discuss about the accessibility of Runewars Miniatures game at the moment. I have had success showing my friends the game and having them become interested in the game but the thing that stops them from buying in to one of the already existing factions is the fact that they must purchase the core set. Since we know that Fantasy Flight has an army box for the Latari Elves can we expect similar boxes for Daqan and Waiqar? If not I know that my friends will just have to split core boxes with me by going 50/50 but I think Fantasy Flight could make it much easier if they released army boxes for all four factions despite the core set. I know that the core set is a good deal but my friends are not enthused about the price tag for the core set and I feel that the 50/50 split option is not available to all rune wars potential players. Does anyone else have a similar experience when trying to get friends to buy into the game?

I agree with these thoughts, although I don't know the answer.

Getting an army box like the one for the Latari Elves for each faction would be a great addition to the game. ^^

Tbh i'd be surprised if they announce human/undead standalone boxes.

However, once the essentials comes out, you could easily snag one half of a core by going halvsies with a friend (or ebaying the other half) and buy an essentials box for whoever didnt get the templates and tokens.

The core is insanely cheap compared to the rest, even the elf box. Elves will be 60USD on their own and are comparable in content to one race in the core. Add on the 25USD for the Essentials so you get your templates, you just spent 15USD less than the Core and got half the models.
Compared to the current standalones, the Daqan/Waiqar half of the core alone is worth about ~115USD, given that the 2x2 of reanimates/spearmen is technically 100USD right there (between both factions).

But, this being FFG, cards are a thing so thats why its usually not a good idea to buy 2-3 cores since you'd probably have an overload of models in the coming year.

If anyone wants to get into the daqan/waiqar but dont want the other half, i'd highly recommend just going halvsies on it. Until we get the Essentials someone will have to barrow templates, but since you are already sharing the Morale deck i doubt it'd be an issue.

If everyone wants to play the same faction just ebay the other half off for like 30USD (since if its not including any generic cards its value will be lowered)

In cases where a potential player can't split a Core with someone else and doesn't want to collect both factions, just tell them to pony up for the Core, then Ebay to faction/cards they don't want in its entirety for $25. It will sell the day they put it up at that price, and they'll still be money ahead over buying a theoretical future army box + essentials kit. I always advocate for shopping at your FLGS, but I got my copy on Amazon for $80 with free Prime shipping. That is an untouchable deal for the amount of content the box contains. If your friends are balking at that price tag, unfortunately tabletop miniature gaming isn't going to be for them.

I am not saying that it isn't feasible to purchase a core set and then sell the other half or discounting how much of a good deal it is comparing to the other offerings available. However I was commenting on the fact that having to sell half a core set still puts that on the consumer if they wish to purchase one faction. Since I bought the core set my friends don't necessarily want to buy the core set for the tokens and rulers etc since we play based around our group and I provide those components. I know it isn't feasible to see army boxes for the original in the near future but I think that if they existed more players at least in my group would have pulled the trigger for the game. Two of my friends are waiting for the elves because they have no interest in collecting two armies or to go through the effort to sell one army to get one army. I think the core set is a great deal and I was glad to have gotten it as a starting point. I just think the ability to purchase every army as a stand alone would benefit the game instead of just making Daqan and Waiqar paired in the core set. Since there are only four confirmed factions it means that you can only buy in to half the available factions through the core set. I understand army boxes would be a worse deal but if fantasy flight wanted to get more money and also make it easier to buy into the armies in the core set I think army boxes would be a good idea for players who want a simple buy and play approach.

I don't see them releasing a separate box for the Waiqar or Daqan.

They haven't for X-Wing or Amada and both games are quite mature.
