Alternate TIE Phantom build?

By Celestial Lizards, in X-Wing

I just bought a Phantom (I'm new to the game, don't judge me for not having one already) and I feel with my brother ALWAYS running Dengar (which isn't fun for either of us) that I can't use him effectively. At some point I will use Whisper-ACD-VI but for now I need to find better ways to run a Phantom. I thought of doing this build as a kind of heavy assault fighter with 3 agility. Any other ideas?

Sigma Sqd Pilot-32

Recon Specialist-3

FCS-2

Lightweight Frame-2

I played this a couple of times last year. Was pretty brutal. :)

Colonel Vessery
TIE/D
Tractor Beam
Adaptability

Shadow Sq. Pilot
Fire-Control System
Hull Upgrade

Shadow Sq. Pilot
Fire-Control System
Hull Upgrade

Also won a hangar bay tournament with this as one of my squads a couple of months ago.

Boba Fett

Slave-1
Push the Limit
Ysanne Isard
Thermal Detonators
Extra Munitions
Engine Upgrade
45 points
“Whisper”
Lone Wolf
Recon Specialist
Sensor Jammer
Advanced Cloaking Device

I love this ship. Soooo much fun to fly, but it suffers from the same thing every imperial ace does. No Autothrusters or any equivalent really hirts it too. That being said, I think it's totally underrated. I've got 2 go-to builds for the Sigma.

Super blocker: Sigma-Enhanced Scopes, Intel, Stygium

Don't Shoot Me Bro: Sigma-FCS, Captive, Stygium

Lately I've been trying a Systems Officer on a Sigma in an all generic list. The decloaking at the start of the turn gives you a lot of room to move into R1 for your green and jumbles target priority pretty well. It's been surprisingly efficient.

I have had some success with this list.

Obsidian Squadron Pilot
Obsidian Squadron Pilot
Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics
Sigma Squadron Pilot + Lightweight Frame
Sigma Squadron Pilot + Lightweight Frame

The idea of using Lightweight Frame instead of the typical Phantom mods is a cool way of playing Phantoms. I think it brings new life to low PS phantoms. I usually just fly them as part of a swarm and rarely cloak if ever. Just pound away with those 4 Attack dice. I still recommend running them as lean as possible because those 2-3 greens can still fail you pretty easily and then you lose 1/4 to 1/3 of your list. Phantoms are the ultimate glass cannon.

I've had fun with:

Sigma w/Sensor Jammer, Rebel Captive, Stealth Device

I'd do it with Lightweight Frame now.

Uh. Then why doesn't he stop?

Welcome to the game! Don't Tell anyone else, but there are still old wave 2-3 expansions I haven't picked up either and I've gotten in deep to this addiction, err hobby.

If your brother only runs Dengar, and never has any fun with him, he needs to stop. Life is too short to fly ships you don't have fun flying. Seriously, find the things you like and do those. Ok, soapbox off.

One build nobody is talking about is Echo. Echo has a unique pilot ability that allows for some unpredictable shenanigans much like the new unreleased starviper title. Add stygium to Echo plus FCS and season to taste with a crew and you have an interesting mid-PS ship that can be less predictable. Yes you are required to have turns it doesn't shoot to set up the decloak and free evade, but it is an option.

I Use Echo as my Primary Phantom. I run em with VI-ACD-FCS-RC. I've had pretty good success with him. I've found the decloak shenanigans help make him unpredictable, helping his survivability. With the new mini echos coming out ( Tie Striker, and the new starviper) coming out, i don't see that unpredictability lasting much longer. While he is still viable, I make sure to cloak and decloak every round. Use FCS for my shots, take an evade for those Aces that beat him out, and RC to help prevent Attani users wanting to attack him.

Also Agent Kallus on whisper can help if well used!

If you put PTL on Echo with Stygium and FCS, you cn PTL off of the evade from Stygium, then do a green, then take another action. Gives some additional reposition possibilities.

You sir just gave me something to try next time I fly an imperial list.

Sigma + Intel Agent + Stygium Partical Accel

Is a great way to play the Phantom. Combine Intel Agent with Decloaks + Blocks, super fun. I used to play that WITH Whisper and an Interceptor. I bet you could run an X7 instead of an Interceptor too.

Amazing mind you have....nice.

I think I shall as well.

I'm thinking of running this version:

"Whisper" (37) - TIE Phantom
Veteran Instincts (1), Advanced Sensors (3), Lightweight Frame (2)

So this build is based on using Whisper as a 4 attack dice ace in an unconventional way...

Using Advanced Sensors before movement to get an Evade allowing you to do a red move, now you can always give Whisper a focus and/or target lock with 3rd party upgrades, and after you have attacked with Whisper regardless of getting a hit or miss you will still get back a Focus for defence...

Another possibility is to fly Echo or Whisper alongside a ship (probably a Decimator) with Kylo crew. That way you just slap a Damaged Cockpit on Dengar and boom! you cloak. But then again, that build might not be the most fun ever.

LWF is cool, but even with that, Phantoms go pop pretty easy. Putting it in a list with another big threat to draw fire might help the Phantom stay alive a little longer.

You know what's scary? Four naked Sigmas -- 100 points even, throwing 16-20 red dice.

If you can find 4 Phantoms for normal price!

I've played phantoms extensively, with little of it being with whisper.

If you're going to run generics, sigmas tend to fair better than shadows. I run a pair of them with Sensor Jammer, Intel Agent, and Stygium. Leaves 36 points to make as big of a threat to distract from the phantoms as possible. Defenders work well in this role. Another option (my personal favorite) is actually two bombers with tactician.

Hands down, the hardest thing to come to terms with is you don't have to shoot with the phantoms every turn. Learn when to cloak and disengage. You can disengage and re engage with phantoms faster than any other ship in the game, so don't worry if you miss a turn or two of shooting of it keeps a ship alive.

Turrets are still a nightmare though, not much you can do about that unfortunately. If they don't have expertise then blocking works well, but if they're loaded out to not need any actions it can be a real pain in the ***.

I was going to make a new thread but then I saw this one

Is Whisper female? I can't find definitive proof anywhere (even in the release article they gender Echo but not Whisper). Does anyone know for sure?

Whisper is whatever gender you want her to be.

FFG articles have been inconsistent on this matter. One used "he" and one used "she".

If you *really* want crazy manuveurs, run Echo will PtL, and change FCS to Adv Sensors...enjoy

What a lovely flower of death you have there.
