Greetings! So I'm an X-Wing player, and I accidentally stumbled upon the Runewars store page while lookin around on here and thought "Woah this looks neat."
Anyways, I'm currently watching Team Covenant's Runewars demo, and I gotta say, this game looks pretty interesting. So, I've got a few questions for you guys, cause i'm really tempted to get into this
What's the playerbase like? (Especially in a place like Denver, Colorado, which is where I'll be moving next year)
What are the pluses and downsides to this game?
What am I looking to pay in terms of playing?
Heyo! I'm new here with some questions!
Not sure what the player base is like down there (it's good here in Minneapolis, but we are very spoiled when it comes to game stores).
Pros:
uses a lot of the best parts of other FFG games (especially armada) and mashes them together in a great way.
Variable initiative. I know I raved about it in the demo video, but seriously... it really is my favorite part of the game. The mind games it creates are great.
Some of the models. Mostly the siege units and command units.
The interlocking tray system for formations of troops, and the way your formation is tied to your effectiveness in battle.
Can collect just one faction and still get all the upgrade cards that faction can use.
Cons:
Some of the models. Mostly the rank and file guys, and Kari.
The interlocking trays. Until you use them a bit and wear them down a little, they can be a pain to get apart.
A full faction will cost a good bit more than a faction of Xwing.
Cost mostly depends on how you want to collect it. If you are like me and switch factions a lot to experience very different play styles, it could get very speedy. If you just want to collect one specific faction, it's not so bad. A lot cheaper than something like warhammer.
Well I think I know the faction I want to play, although they haven't been released yet (the elves). My plans are to paint them to resemble Dark Elves (and yeah, i'll write up a backstory that makes a bit of sense for them)
Anyways - From what I can tell from looking, it seems like just collecting 1 faction (Especially the elves) will only cost me, including the starter box(the 25 dollar unreleased one), about 100 bucks (At first), which seems pretty cheap for a game like this.
Also, I'll be making a mat in the morning for the game (well by mat I should say, I'm gonna go up to lowes and get a 6X4 sheet of wood and paint 6X3 ft of it, and i'll spray paint 6 inches of each side black so that I have room to lay cards and such. I'm not going to go too into detail on how I'm making the board, but it'll only cost me about 30 bucks)
-----
My biggest con, from what I can see so far, is we've got a pretty small collection. Now, this isn't a con to me , because getting into a game while its still BRAND NEW seems amazing, and will allow me to master my army FAR sooner than players that come in in say... 2 or 3 years. However, I can see how this'll be a con for some people.
Also - only 3 factions ATM. I'm hoping we get 6 factions, at most. MAYBE 7, except in my experience it becomes harder to balance things when working with a large selection of armies.
Costs depend on how many points you want to play. 100 point skirmishes or the standard 200 points. 100 points you can just get away with a single Latari box however for larger matches getting a second one will buff your army points to close to 200.

Thanks for the advice! I'll get one to start with, paint it up, and then get a second one a few months later, paint that one up, and then go from there! ^^
Technically theres only 2 factions atm since the elves arent in stores yet. As of right now theres 4 planned factions, the unannounced one is the Uthuk, which are your demon guys i believe. Probably wont see them until the 1yr mark of this game though.
Honestly, not even xwing was that big for awhile. There were very few ships and not many ways to use them for several waves. I'm kinda leisurely playing this atm since its just me and 2 friends that i know of in the Lincoln Nebraska area that play, once i get my Core painted (finally finished the Daqan side, stupid business trip cutting into my plans...) i plan to start demoing this at the local game store in hopes of getting more people, but i dont expect many if any at all to get in until we get more things. Even with the unreleased but announced stuff, the lists will be mostly the same for each faction.
The standard game is 200 points on a 6'x3' surface. If that's your goal (and I think it should be your goal eventually), then 2 cores gets you 200-points of Daqan. It's not the best army, necessarily, but it's legal. Two cores will not quite let you get to 200-points of Waiqar. We don't know all the costs of the Latari Elves units, but they tend to have lower costs, so I think it's a safe bet that if you wanted to get to 200 points as soon as they launch, you will want to buy the $25 Essentials Pack and 3x Latari Elves Army Expansion, which will cost you a total of approximately $205. If you do that, though, you will miss out on other upgrades that come in the expansions and you'd miss out on the cool new hero, Maegan Cyndewin.
If I were collecting elves, my purchase plan would be 1 army box and 1 of each expansion. Then I'd see how close that gets me to 200 points. From there, I'd play around with upgrades and units and then buy expansions that will get me closer to my ideal army.
My plan for Latari was 2 starters, infantry upgrade, new hero, and any new unit upgrades that come along.
But @Budgernaut makes sense, perhaps one starter and each elf expansion might be a better way

This
Part of the reason i didnt get 2 cores (well, initially, found someone selling one he got from whatever convention they were being given out at for 60 so i went halvsies with my waiqar friend) was because i want the cards, and probably at least 2 of most cards, and if i already got all the spearmen, cavalry, archers, or reanimates i'd ever want ... uh i might have too many models then lol.
I do the same thing in xwing where i will never buy multiples of a ship i dont have a conceivable way of using, either for fun or actually being competitive. I made that mistake with my orks in 40k where i have way WAY more boyz than i could possibly field in a standard 2000pt game (or want to field) so most of them just collect dust lol.

The two other factions will be out by the end of the year.
Thanks for all the help here guys! I'll be picking up the game's starter set (the one with Daqan vs Waiqar) sometime this month.
Also, I plan to switch factions eventually if they every add dwarves for erm.... beard reasons.
Also, I feel like you guys don't understand what expensive is in a hobby like this.... I used to play 40k, and I gotta say, spending 500 - 600 dollars for a single 1850 list (I played dark eldar) was expensive, whereas 200 - 300 bucks for a single faction here doesn't seem so bad.
The faction starter for elves and the core set are money efficient for models while the expansions have cards you want to use. Buying 2 factions will also get you at least 2 of every card with one of each expansion.
I think I'm $300 deep in the game so far, with two full factions...thinking of all the other games I have played I still can't believe how affordable (FOR A TABLE TOP MINIATURE GAME) this game is...and they are really quick to paint armies, well my Waiqar were...I'm now just hoping I can get my next expansions early like the last time...it would be cool to get a battle report up with an Ankaur Maro list on friday...probably won't be able to though.
i was about to say... quick to paint my *** lol. Yeah the waiqar are a lot easier to paint than the daqan, but the majority of the time sink on the daqan is the need for the trim effect taking me almost as long to do as the rest of the model lol.
i actually despise painting the oathsworn because of that trim. SO MANY EDGES MUST BE GOLD!! fml....

Same problem here. Then to top it all off, my hands are not real steady, so I almost always end up overpainting on the base armor color and having to go back and touching that up again as well.

1st question:
- quick, fun, tactic and quite realistic gameplay.
- well ballanced internally (no useless units inside the armies).
- not too big variety of units, granting that you won't buy useless units that you'll rarely use.
- Moderate unbalanced externally still some stuff to rebalance, waiqar are found by not few players weaker than Daqan, but there's reasonable evidence to think that the unbalance will be reduced). That's still a lot better ballanced than most wargames, but playing waiqar feels like you habe to row upstream.
- Some upgrade cards are too good and you want several, having to but miniatures that you don't really want.
2nd question
- On the mid-long term 250-300€ sounds fair. Quite cheaper than the average.
I used a pointy tooth pick for gold on the edges of armour
Easy solution: Don't do the trim.
IMHO the armor looks better in all-steel anyway.
Hmm. I just had an idea. I wonder if I can find a good paint pen to do the gold trim on the Daqan.
Im sure you can find a paint pen that would work but it probably wouldnt be a metallic color. Unless you dont want a metallic color that might be an issue.
They do make metallic pens/markers. I just don't know how good they are.
