Lore Question: origin of spider clan

By profparm, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hello all. I want to read up on spider clans creation and as much of their story as I can, but I don't know where it starts. I'm currently at the Kaze no Shiro start of the Four Winds lore, but if it's not until a later time I can easily skip ahead. I was playing during gold edition, but quit just before one of the winds was chosen, and followed the timeline loosely after that so I don't actually remember if they were created while I was playing or not.

Thanks in advance!

I believe they got their start in or near Samurai? They didn't get solidified, story wise, as a recognized 'clan' until Emperor though. Just look for Daigotsu and his cult. Its really about him.

End of Lotus, beginning of Samurai.

Can we please leave it at that for a change?

Unfotunately I missed most of the story around Diagotsu and the creation of the Spider Clan. I think I remember a fiction where the Spider Clan infiltrated a minor clan, Sparrow I think? Then the whole Kali-ma thing happened and things just went off the rails.

As being someone who played Shadowlands before they got an official stronghold I was intrigued by the story of the Spider rising in secret from within the empire because let's face it that was the only way they were ever going to win. But where it ended up felt like a bunch of different things being thrown out there just to see what stuck.

I personally hope there is another rise of corruption from within the empire under the FFG story arc. I don't mind playing as the big bad but it's always more interesting in a story when the curtain gets pulled back to reveal the real bad guy was right there all along.....a la Kaiser Souze

Me too, but I want it to be secretive and spread among all clans, like The Bloodspeaker's cult or something similar, no silly Tainted Great Clan.

The Spider are combination of the warriors tainted at the battle of volturnum and various ronin recruits who are not tainted. The Unicorn meet them first and assist in their legitimacy. They act as Daigotsu's eyes in the empire. They become officially a clan at the end of the destroyer wars.

They were formed by Daigotsu around the time of the destroyer war. They didn't become a great clan until a few years later when Daigotsu struck a deal with Iweko to elevate the spider clan to minor clan status in return for Daigotsus death by seppuku. Daigotsu accepted, and as his soul entered jigoku, Fu-Leng transferred all power to him, letting him become the new lord of jigoku and defeat Kali-Ma.

They became a great clan only after Daigotsu Susumu renegotiated the deal, which would allow the spider to be a great clan with Kanpeki at the helm, and in return, Daigotsu, being the new Lord of Jigoku, would not allow the taint to affect anyone that didn't willingly accept it. Iweko agreed, and the Spider became a great clan.

Just a note, that unlike Fu-Leng, who was twisted and corrupted by jigoku, Daigotsu would never be subjugated by Jigoku. He became the first Master of Jigoku, able to bind jigoku to his will. For the first time ever, jigoku was not in control of its master, but its master in control of it.

If they use Iuchiban this time around, I hope the story is better handled than the AEG version of his 'modern' return. In that, Iuchiban was a one note, and - to use an admittedly lazy form of criticism - supremely boring antagonist. Also, that was the era when L5R started to resemble DBZ a bit too much. The power levels thrown around by Shugenja became ridiculous. It was one thing when Iuchiban and Sezaru had enough oomph to level cities, but when any Shugenja the writers liked was flying around blasting things left and right like superhero, it really made the setting a lot sillier.
