GenCon storyline tournament

By Chron73, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Pure speculation post, was wondering what everyone would like to see in the storyline based on the tournament outcome?

Myself, I think it would be cool if when it got down to the final, the announcement is made that the loser's clan initiates the coup and the winner's clan champion is the one who storms into the throne room and slays the murderer.

Of course if FFG goes a purely different route and doesn't even have a coup, then my idea is dead.

Assuming the coup will happen, its not time for the Coup to happen yet.

Second what C2K said, however, it would also be horrible if they do a coup and its over as quick as it started.

Personal random speculation based on no real idea of the lore, just what FFG has shown us:

Crane are reeling from the tsunami and death of Satsume, who was killed by the Scorpion.

Lion are working with the Scorpion to undermine Crane and specifically the Lion are paying Yoritomo to harass Crane shipping.

Scorpion are also encouraging the Utaku Kamoko faction of the Unicorn to attack the Lion for killing her mother, who the Scorpion also killed.

Phoenix are really worried about Unicorn aggression and them messing with meishōdō, so the Scorpion are encouraging them defend against the Unicorn.

Dragon have internal problems from the declined birthrate and are just trying to stay afloat.

Crab are preparing for a huge battle with the Shadowlands while Scorpion assure them they will get support from the rest of the Empire.

All of this to say, I think there might be Clan War, with Lion and Phoenix on one side against Crane and Unicorn on the other, with Scorpion fanning the flames, the Crab freaking out about the Shadowlands army, and Dragon just trying to survive. The storyline prize will be what factions gain the advantage in the Clan war.

The Emerald Champion just died. The Test of the Emerald Champion is the gold standard of story tournaments. It's an actual tournament, and it has notable story relevance without having too much story relevance.

Totally agree. I'd be shocked if this was anything more than the Emerald Champion tournament with the actual events that could lead to a Coup or Clan War happening after actual release with Organized Play events.

Winning clan gets to have the Emerald Champion but is also complicit, in some way, of the murder of the old Emerald Champion

Losing clan discovers who murdered the old Emerald Champion, but becomes complicit, in some way, of starting, or participating in, a coup against the emperor.

Of course none of this will matter. After I win world's with a Shadowlands deck I will choose Fu-Leng to become emperor, destroying all of Rokugan in the process, ushering in the beginning of 1000 years of darkness, and forcing FFG to release a new core set. #evillaugh #thatswhatimfightingfor #fuleng4life

I strongly, fervently doubt that the Scorpion Clan had anything to do with Doji Satsume's death. The framing of the story makes them the obvious choice. No mystery opens with the actual killer being presented as the prime suspect.

On the other hand, it's perfectly reasonable to assume that the culprit chose poison as the "underhanded" murder weapon with the purpose of casting suspicions on the Scorpion.

I don't think that L5R fictions are traditional mysteries as their genre, too : P.

(If you want some detective work that could be straight out of the Rokugan, try out one of the Judge Dee stories!)

Another one would be Barry Hughart's Master Li Novels, although they are very Chinese.
