Swarm Leader Luke?

By BanthaFather, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey guys!

Been toying around with a Luke/Swarm Leader list. The thought is to put Tycho with two Green Squadron As, flank with them, and line up Luke for a shot.

Anybody got a list that could make this work?

I've tried Swarm Leader on Wedge, and there's one issue. You have to protect your Swarm Leader at all costs. It didn't take two full rounds for Wedge to die, and never got full advantage of Swarm Leader. Now, Luke has better survivability than Wedge, so it may bring more positive results.

Here is what I put together with those ships:

(100)

Luke - Swarm Leader, R2-D2, IA (35 total)

GSP - Snap Shot, Refit, Test Pilot, Trick Shot x 2 (19 total each)

Tycho - PTL, Refit (27 total)

That's a handsome list.

I've been thinking about the fragility of the list too. I think that putting more ships on the board may help with that, so here's my most recent iteration:

Luke Skywalker: Swarm Leader, R2-D2, Integrated Astromech

Prototype Pilot: Refit (x3)

Airen Cracken: Rage

Run Airen with Luke to give the extra action, raging when there is a nice shot. The As flank in formation, and give Luke extra dice when they can. Optimally Luke can get a six dice shot with focus and target lock. Now, he wouldn't get that more than once a game, but sheesh--that's a dead ship right there.

You'd have to fly smart though, because the A Wings want to reposition, but need to evade to give Luke his shots. My thinking is that you'd have to kite the opponent a bit--maybe lead them around with Airen and Luke while the As get in position.

Hmmmm...

swarm leader is amazing, and the joke around the locals is that I don't know how to fly anything else.

Luke's a neat idea... what about this?

Wedge Antilles (29)
Swarm Leader (3)
R7-T1 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Luke Skywalker (28)
Expertise (4)
R5-P9 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Captain Rex (14)
Sabine's Masterpiece (1)

Sabine Wren (TIE Fighter) (15)

Total: 100

explored this idea a bit more this weekend theory crafting with some local players...

what about this?

Integrated Astromech (0)

Wes Janson (29)
Predator (3)

Predator raises the potential to get that eye result for the evades to pass off to Luke. Wes strips tokens before Luke shoots. I think Wedge is under utilized in this build however.... I'll give it a try on this weeks casual night and report.

I flew the Wedge/Wes/Rex/Sabine list and went 3-1 on Friday night on casual night. Stress and token stripping is a pretty hard counter to my local meta right now, and Sabine was actually very effective as a blocker.

Honestly these are wonderful looking lists.

I'd personally throw this into the mix:

Poe Dameron (PS8)

Swarm Leader

R5-P9

Pattern Analyzer

IA

Captain Rex

Shield Upgrade

2x GSP

Title

Snap Shot

Juke

Refit

Hey guys,

Got the chance to try out a list. Managed to get a few games in, and, overall, it did pretty well.

Luke Skywalker: Swarm Leader, R2-D2, Integrated Astromech

Prototype Pilot: Refit (x3)

Airen Cracken: Rage

I didn't get as much use out of Airen as I had hoped, though he was useful. Gotta say, stripping all the shields off a Ghost with one shot from Luke was pretty cool. There were plenty of turns where Luke was shooting 5 dice or better.

Around game four Luke started to get targeted big time. He had some sticking power though, and really did work. My only real problem was maneuvering because... well, you know how the t-65s dial goes. I'd love to figure out a way to more consistently give Luke a second action, and give him either a boost or a barrel roll.

Honestly, the sheer number of ships proved to be a problem for the opponent, and blocking with the As worked well--after all, as long as they are converting evades into red dice, they are pulling their weight.

I like the lists that you guys have posted, and am looking forward to trying them out if I can ever get my hands on some of those cards.

If anyone else tries out a Swarm Leader Luke with A Wings, let us know how it goes.

Luke is an interesting way to go as he gets a bit tankier... but to be completely honest, the best build I've found so far is this one:

Jess Pava (25)
R2-D6 (1)
Swarm Leader (3)

Jan Ors (25)
Trick Shot (0)
Dorsal Turret (3)
Nien Nunb (1)

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Juke (2)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Snap Shot (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Juke (2)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Snap Shot (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Total: 100

It's the tankiest and consistently the deadliest. Every list I've made featuring Swarm Leader compared to this one makes sacrifices in my opinion.

Snap/Juke A-Wings are incredibly deadly. You will either block the enemy or they will end up in snap shot range if you keep them in close. Swarm Leader effect does not require the A-Wings to have a legal shot, just be R 1-3, so even if they bump and the enemy is in the A-Wing arc you can still Swarm Leader them. Then the juke/snap shot combo is pretty nasty. If they don't bump you get to get that off twice! Jan for me has always been just as effective and usually the MVP. Not only does she give extra offense to the A-wings if Jess isn't able to take a shot, but her Dorsal turret can also help plink away damage quite effectively. She also works as a great blocker against Dengar and other large base aces. Jess is ultra tanky and is so much more maneuverable than the T65, not to mention if she stays close to the rest of the squad (which she should be doing!) she really doesn't care about stress here and there.

The other nice thing about Jess and the A-Wings being all skill 3 is that it gives you more options. If those A-Wings NEED their Evade token, they still have it because chances are you are shooting near the end of combat. Jess fires last allowing the A-wings to still do their double tap with juke/snapshot, and Jess gets the built in re-rolls hanging around the A-Wings and Jan. Making the build last longer.

This list got me a store champ second place win with the days best MOV. and the game I lost, I lost to time and 10 points... I haven't flown it much since, but I'll be practicing it a lot more as I think it is one of the stronger lists in my local meta right now that can deal with almost anything... haven't faced bombers with it yet tho.

So compared to the Luke lists:

Jess is tankier, faster, and more maneuverable than Luke, the snap/juke A-Wings are deadlier, and Jan is a strong utility player vs another pair of A-wing Prototypes.

Compared to my other Rebel list:

Wedge/Wes and the pair of ties is pretty effective, but is not as fast or maneuverable. nor are the ships as durable. But they can control the board better. It also sacrifices the utility of Jan passing off a red die to anyone who needs it.
