Okay, so, traditionally, regular games are 100 points and Epic is 300 points.
I don't play traditionally. My games start at 150... which brings me to my Epic issue... well, a MATH issue, honestly. Are Epic games simple 3 times the regular points or just adding 200 points to the traditional 100 points? If it's simply 200 points tacked on, easy. My epic games will be 350 points. Now, if it's 3 times the standard, my games will be 450 points.
As you can see, that's a substantial point difference! I'm leaning towards my games being 350, but I'd like to keep it as legit as possible.
Side note: I use the 150 point mark because that's how I was introduced to the game and how the guy who runs a store tournament sets his games at... so, seeing as how that's really the only place I play even remotely competitively, it made sense to just play with that point value.
Need some Epic Play advice!
The greater the points the longer the match. 300 points will be about right but 350 could seriously add an hour or more! The problem with adding more points in epic is that it can become quite lopsided as the game goes on and not as much fun as you think.
Yeah, that was my thinking as well, which is why I wanted to avoid the 450 point game. I'll start with the 350 and if it goes on for an insane amount of time, I'll either add a time limit or throttle the points back to the standard 300.
In my experience 300 is plenty huge ships or not. Speaking of which, treat huge ships like bombers, don't fill every upgrade slot with points . I know it is tempting considering they have upgrades that are never seen in other formats of X-wing. Pick your hardpoints for gunships and your supporting crew or cargo equipment for support ships and leave it as such.
To answer your actual question, the rules say Standard play is 100 points and Epic is 300. It does not go into whether its +200 or 3 times the amount or anything else.
The thing about Epic is there are usually so many attacks each round that ships that are often good in smaller games, such as arc-dodgers, or that use high pilot skill to kill opponents before they shoot back are very vulnerable to getting shot at by many ships in Epic and are high priority targets that die fast. For this reason most people tend to take a lot of cheap generic ships. So even if you have a decked out Raider or CR90 coming in around 150 points, you still have 6-8 other ships per side on the map. It takes a lot of time to figure out where all those ships are going to be so setting dials is tough. Then during the combat phase, you have to take care to track who has fired and who has not. The first round or two, often take an hour or more each. Once a few ships on each side start to disappear it goes faster. Still if plan on going more than 300 points, you need to set aside a whole afternoon or evening and still may not finish.
Also, official epic rules say you may not use more than 12 of any small ship type or more than 6 of any large ship type. That means a person could field a legal 300 point list with nothing but ten 12 point basic Ties and ten 18 point basic Interceptors. That is 20 dials to plan. 20 maneuver templates to put down. 20 actions to take. 20 shots to measure range and arc.
Oh... yeah, no worries on ever having THAT many ships per side... ever.
I'm planning an Epic Battle of Scarif scenario that will be 2 missions. I'll add a third in between the two when they inevitably release the Hammerhead Corvette. Anyway, as it is now, there will be 19 Imperial ships and 13 Rebel ships. Imperial ships will spawn up to two per round as well. It'll take forever to play but, whatever, I do what I want.
I mean, the official numbers are standard=100 and epic=300, but fly casual! There are two rules of thumb to be aware of, boiled down into this equation:
100 points = 1 hour = ~2 epic points
So, for every 100 points, expect the game to last at least that many hours, so a 400 point game might last 4 hours. The other thing to be aware of is how many "epic points" each person gets. Huge ships not only cost squad points but epic points. Huge huge ships like the CR-90 and Raider cost 3 epic points and tiny huge ships like the GR-75, Gozanti, and C-ROC cost 2 epic points. A very common format is 300 squad points and 5 epic points on each side.
The other very important rule is that you're not allowed to have any more than four of the same large ship or twelve of the same small ship. That rule is for a 300 point game, so feel free to adjust to the size of your game!
Thanks for flying casual and flying epic! May the Force be with you!
edit: sorry
@pickirk01
! Didn't see your post. Is it six large ships? Cool! I'll have to try six torp scouts for my next epic game... not!
OH! I've been misunderstanding how the points worked in epic battles! I thought the epic ships point cost was taken directly from that pool!
This... changes everything.

The first part is true; the second part, not. I have played 200, 300, 600, and 1,000 point per side games. The main thing that changes is the time needed to finish.
No the squad point cost of the epic ship and upgrades still counts towards the 300 point or 350 point squad total. It just means you can't field 2 Raiders (not that you would want to).

Wait. Now I'm not sure if I confused you. So just to be clear... For example: 300 Squad points could be a Raider - 50pt Fore section+50pt Aft+ 50pts of upgrade - 3 Bombers with various Ordnance for about 75 pts and 5 Black Squadron Ties with Crack Shot for another 75 points.
In addition to Squad points there are also "Epic Points" The Huge class ships have a number of Epic points and you are only allowed 5 total Epic points. So A CR90 is 3 epic and a Transport is 2 so you could have one of each. That would probably get you to near 200 squad points and you would spend the last 100 on small/large ships. You could not have 2 Raiders or 2 Corvettes in standard epic play.
All this is for official epic tournament play of, course. At home or with friends at your local game store, do whatever you want. The object of the game (any game) is fun!
Edit: Yeah what @DaveRob said.
2nd Edit: OMG I typed your instead of you're. I am shamed.
Oh! Okay, yeah, you threw me at first, but now I get it
And yeah, I think I'll stick with just having the extra 50 points like my usual games for now. I don't think I want to compete "professionally" or anything . I just enjoy flying against the locals at the shop and my friends
I kind of want an escalation with an epic format for the final round to come into play. Call it Epicalation You play a game of escalation up to 120 points, but the last 150 point match is replaced with a 200 squadron point 3 epic point list. Maybe that way we can get more of the huge ships into X-wing games.

Hmm. I like playing with these toys and all, but that might be a bit too erotic for me.

If you're starting out in Epic try a 200 point game and stick to the small Epic ships (Transport/Gozanti/C-ROC). This will get you used to the Epic ship mechanics. Managing the larger Epic ships is like a mini game in itself! Also make sure your opponent is taking an equivalent Epic ship, e.g. You both take a small Epic ship, a large Epic ship (Raider/Corvette), both or none (an Epic dogfight), this injects a bit of balance to the game.

I wonder how they would fair? There's loads of things that can remove targets locks in Epic and they can be rammed by an Epic ship meaning instant destruction. Plus in Epic there are so many targets...
