I don't think the sliding apart would be a huge problem, because it could be easily fixed by playing atop a stickier surface or just pushing the squares back together mid-game, but I think you're right that the fiberboard would likely be very slippery, and reduce the precision of the game (akin to all my experiences playing on waxy cardboard, printed paper, or other off-brand homebrew mats.) Still though, I think this was a really cool product, and I think there's a possibility to make something like them work, but I bet the product was cancelled because the fiberboard wasn't a great choice of material.
