Okay, have I been playing Epic wrong this whole time?! Yikes.

You're not the only one - I only found out about that rule like 2 Epic games ago.

I imagine that Epic would be GREAT if we just knew how to play it right....

Well, I never really used Recover on dual-section huge ships because I thought it sucked compared to Reinforce. So I haven't actually played it wrong, but I may use Recover a bit more on my Raider and CR90 now. :)

I like Ordnance Tubes, 3 Homing Missiles, and a weapons engineer. Get alot of attacks that way and cut down the cost a bit.

It's also worth noting that playing huge ships is awesome because it's FUN! Who cares if it's not optimal. It's gorgeous and awesome!

Don't sleep on the TIE/D. Deltas with Ion Cannons can do a lot of damage, especially against Epic ships due to their vulnerability to Ion tokens. Comms Booster is also well worth the 4 points, especially if you're using Interceptors. Spending one energy to remove all stress tokens AND assigning a focus token is absolutely golden, especially for someone like a Raging Soontir.

As for Howl, agree to disagree. For me, part of the fun of Epic is trying to find all these weird combos that don't exist anywhere else. It's the only part of the game where a card like Decoy can actually be really good, and I don't feel bad about using it to make my heavy points investment more of a workhorse any more than I would about using her to power a swarm of Academy Pilots.

I do like Tie /D's in Epic, but I don't like putting all your points into them. I think a couple are fine, but you will need more fighter screen.

I get that some people like to find the weird combos and I get that it's just the way I like to play. :)

For the fighter screen, the last time the local FLGS ran a Team Epic event, my team ran three Ion Deltas and one Tractor Delta, backed by three Omega Specialist SFs with Crack Shot, Accuracy Corrector and LWF, along with Major Striden packing an Operations Specialist and a Sensor Jammer Kagi. It worked amazingly well, with anywhere from 11-14 attacks each round coming from the 7 small ships. We erased a Lothal Rebel in a single turn. The Operations Specialist didn't really do anything, but that was only because our shots rarely missed. Striden's biggest role turned out to be serving as a relay point for Coordinate actions from our Epic ships.

Wait can someone explain to me again nice and simple the interactions of recover, shield technician, automated protocol, instigator title?

Can you perform a recover action? Then with shield technician choose to spend 0 energy then gain 1 shield free with instigator because you still performed a recover action? (Similar to using keyan's ability without actually changing focus results)

If I take automated protocol, I pay 1 energy to perform a free recover action but then I still have to spend energy to recover shields right? So minimum 2 energy to get 1 shield back? OR if you have instigator then 2 energy for 2 shields?

I've faced many Raiders and Tantives.

Missile ones fare way better than any other. Homing Missiles of course.

For the Raider you can have 3 Homing Missiles, Weapon Engineer and of course Stridan can supply 2 more Target locks with a weapon engineer + target sync., have jonus nearby for 2 rerolls per missile without spending TL and probably some teams to change dice from blanks or eyeball result to hits if your rerolls fail you.
Howlrunner nearby for Swarm Tactics or decoy (range 2 on decoy makes it safer) for a PS8 Raider that also gets a reroll on his primary weapon.

Thats the general kit of Raiders I've faced (and crushed with my Dormitz list (: )

Tantive is the same kind but uses Roark for PS12 and Esege for focus usage, you can use M9G8 on the tantive to get a reroll for every attack you do and you can have Dutch give him a free TL action to then use Coordinate instead of TL~

Homing Missiles are the way to use both the Raider and Tantive right now and their one specific counter - a Dormitz list, can still be taken down if played carefully and with a bit of luck of course.

Another Tantive build I saw was using Baze Malbus on your last attack by firing a Quad Laser to a target you were definitely not going to hit, allowing you to get another primary turret attack with the Tantive, thats a lot of dice being thrown! It also had Jan Ors to add one more dice, the usual PS12 Roark and Esege passing focus for each attack and of course the TLs on the Tantive to reroll for primary attacks. Brutal brutal. Except against Dormitz cause the turret is range 3 and all my important things get into range 2 of it on turn 1 ;D

And a good counter against huge ships with small support ships nearby - Ruthlessness. 3 TIE/D with Ion Cannon & that EPT can cause so much havoc or simply deny the Jonus reroll or whatnot~ And against a non-huge epic list, it causes havoc because of how many ships are always close together.

You've got it. The Recover action from Automated Protocols being "free" doesn't mean you don't have to spend all your energy, or that you recover more shields than the energy you spend.

And Instigator doesn't care how much energy you spent on your Recover action, just that it was a Recover action. You could take a Recover action when you were already out of energy, spend all zero of your energy, recover zero shields, and then recover one additional shield with Instigator.

And yes, Shield Technician does allow you to spend zero energy on a Recover action.
