GenCon Unofficial Event Interest?

By Reiga, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hey everyone! Over at the L5R Discord we've mulled setting up an unofficial L5R event at GenCon, considering Friday Morning or Sunday afternoon after the casual event.

The goal is to get the community together and provide (another) venue to play L5R for those who couldn't get event tickets and for those who just want more L5R!

We're looking into providing limited prize support, more details on that to come!

How many of you would be interested in such an event?

I would be interested in such an event.

Saturday morning is also top cut and people might want to watch that. Would another later time be better maybe ?

Yep it probably makes the most sense either Sunday after casual is over, around 2, or Friday morning before the Tournament - so 9-11:30 or 12.

I updated the OP to eliminate Saturday, don't want to interfere with the T16 cut playing or viewing.

I would be in for Friday morning.

And if people are interested, Tomorrow's Prophets project could throw in a little unofficial story prize.

I would participate.

Interest piqued!

Where would you find space though? That is my only concern.

If you did it on Sunday, then a lot of space opens up in the main gaming hall. During the con, you could do it at a hotel.

My only concern with doing it at the Con is if GenCon might not allow it. Companies pay money to get space.

This is also my main concern and we're looking into it. Sunday at open play tables or a hotel lobby are the most likely scenarios.

Want/need to gauge interest first - we could even reserve a bunch of tables at a restaurant if there's only a few of us.

I was starting to think up of the logistics of a late friday or saturday get together, looking into printing some alt art cards but haven't gotten around to researching anything. For all those who couldn't make it to a FFG sponsored event... Love to see this pan out and get the community together despite not making it into the main tourney.

Might even be worth a deliberate overlap in that case. Why should those more privileged have access to the unofficial prizes being offered elsewhere? Iunno; just spitballing here.

haha the only reason why i wanted to move it to later on was so that people can still get their gencon experience in and not conflict with other events that and two chances (at least thursday/friday mornings) to try and get 1 core to play with.

Hey wasn't there an old L5R tradition of midnight madness?

We could do Friday midnight madness - issue is again finding someplace.

As far as proxies - I think we could do a share a box clan tournament where each player lends out half their core set JUST FOR THAT MATCH and then get their cards back. That way there's low risk of someone accidentally running off with half your set, as you'll see them your whole game.

Sunday was my only day I could have played so given the ticket situation, I would be interested in something that day.

Honor competition?

Best wangst tirade about how they couldn't get into the event?

I would pay to see that.

PS: I understand the frustration of many people who couldn't get into the event. This is not me making fun of there disappointment, but rather about how extreme some people have shown theirs. Please don't throw me rocks.

It's still in rather poor taste, don't you think? One does not put out a fire by fanning the flames.

The first step in avoiding thrown rocks is to avoid doing anything that would get rocks thrown at you.

When there is nothing left to burn the fire will die out on its own. ;)

There is plenty of space that is available at night as long as a game isn't run. You just commandeer a bunch of tables at the event hall and not border someone's official space. There are plenty of times that i have just hung out after hours with random groups of people just playing games. As long as you aren't breaking policy its fine... and public drinking is frowned upon yet not an outright offense lol.

But public intoxication is, so drink in moderation.

Meant no drinking in the convention center rather, outside is your own business
