Scratch built YT-1000

By Decan Mabu, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hi!!

Here is my new work.

Once finished the Hammerhead corvette, I have started two new projects, an YT-1000 and a civil shuttle (Star commuter 2000).

regarding the freighter here are some pictures about how it goes...

Can you describe your process?

Obviously you begin with an image, then sculpt in high density foam? and from there make a mold and cast in resin?

What is your background in? Art, engineering, product design? This isn't your first rodeo I presume.

And your credit card number, expiration date and code please. ;)

First of all... ...I try to be documented about the ship, as such what I do is to retrieve as much information I can about this ship, ( pictures, dimensions, manufacturer, notorious/popular ships of this s kind, common uses of them...) once I have enough information I make a drawing or blueprint on the scale I want to make the model.

With that, I prepare the skeleton of the model with a soft wood, the is a type of wood commonly used in aeromodelism or ships models, is very light and easy to manipulate, I also use another materials such as plasticard and acetate films...

With that, I start to make the model with milliput, a tw component putty, I do this sometimes adhering it directly to the skeleton and others separately, and including the pieces later to the model (like the cockpit, docking bridges...).

About the milliput, you have to take a big care about the drying process, because this might help you on preparing different effect on it, so you have to control the time of this drying process... ...the experience with this milliput in other works help very much on this (yes you're right is not my first rodeo, indeed you can see mi last work here on this blog if you try to find the topic scrathbuilt hammerhead corvette).

Once the model is finished If I can and my colleagues start to be very anoying about the ship I prepare a mold and make a lot of copies in resine (last time the got very angry because I didn't make a mold of the hammerhead corvette...) so everybody can paint and make a lot of painting diagrams of the model

An about my background you are not going to believe it but...

...I'm a chemist!!

Aniway I work very closely with engineering and design department on my job.

Regarding the bacground in art, there is a strong tradition in my family in the arts (indeed i'm a black sheep because I decided to focus my studies in science instead of arts as most of my family do...) but keep something of the family within me...

I can not tell you more information about my credit card my Wife and sons do not allow me... ?

But I hope I had answered most of your questions

Excellent info, thank you. I may try my hand on some scratch builds this Summer.

Have you decided how you're going to fly the Star Commuter or the YT-1000? By that I mean will you use an existing ship's dial, base token & stats or do you plan to generate those for yourself as well?

For the star commuter the idea was to use at the beginning the movements applied for the senator shuttle in the mission included on the core box.

About the YT-1000 I was thinking in something like the YT-1300, the stats might be the same as the outer rim smuggler, I wanted to put in red (or also quit ) the 4 straight to resemble lesser motors than the YT-1300 and 2400, but also I want to include on his actions bars the evade and in the upgrades the Ilicit (to look more like an smuggler pilot...

Regarding the points use the same as the outer rim smuggler adding 2 mor points for compensating the evade action (partially compensated with the 4 red).

How do you see it?

I think that's a good place to start. After you try it in a real game, you will be able to see if it's too weak or too strong in attack, agility, points, etc.

I wish I had friends outside of the game stores that played X-wing. Then I could experiment with points, objectives, missions and everything else.

I noticed two things from your pictures: you seem to be working on some droid ships, yes? (I wish we had a Prequel Era edition of the game!!)
And secondly, you had a business card or something in Spanish. Are you in Spain?

Yes I'm making some vulture droids for an Xwing campaign related with an isolated Separatist bastion... ...and how it deals with The empire as well as the rebels and others...

Also, I want to make some hiena bombers... ...at the moment I had made 4 vultures, selecting two of them for making molds, Let me try to upload some pictures...

About business card, yes I have... ...and yes I'm in Spain (in Madrid) If you want I can send you one in spanish.

This is some nice work. Do you have a YT-1000 you could sit side-by-side with it? (well, if you don't - do you know anybody that'd let you take a side-by-side pic?)

I'm interested to see how similar the two look once everything's said and done.

Hi Alino, sorry but I think I do not understand you very well,

what do you mean side by side? as I know there has not been launched to the market an YT-1000 model (at least at scale 1:270) all I had seen is a bigger scale model and another guy making a model.

But what I can do is to show you some drawings or blueprints I had found, and those are the ones I'm using to make de model, here are the links, but as you can imagine there are no definitive drawing for this YT-1000 (the same happens if you have a look on the drawings and blueprints for the the YT-1300 and the YT-2400).

I also had made little modifications on the ship who were out of that diagrams in order to give a more realistic and older look of the ship (is supposed this freighter has been launched more than one hundred years before the YT-1300 series and is highly customizable... ...or at least this is what I had read about it).

hope this might help you with this...

Ah alright, my bad XD I misunderstood the miniature, so my apologies.
