Tempered Steel question

By Sulfurious, in Runewars Rules Questions

I was watching the battle reports from the San Antonio event and at one point the player used tempered steel and said "it allow *him* to count each surge as a damage."

Is that correct? Seems like it would need to be a Surge plus ability for it to change each surge to a damage.

I agree, that seems incorrect. The ability costs 1 surge and adds 1 hit. Because the ability says "exhaust this card," you need to ready the upgrade before you can use it again.

I agree, that's why it's cheaper than Master-Crafted Weapons even though that has 2 surges rather than the 1 that Tempered Steel has.

Possibly he had master crafted weapons+combat ingenuity. I'm planning to use that on carrion lancers.

IIRC he was playing Daqan and they don't get Combat Ingenuity.....Dammit!

Thats the basic effect but it only exchanges one surge for a hit due to the exhaust, which is why its cheap. I like it on most of my Daqans since majority of the time they end up rolling a single surge, which i cant normally use.

It is still multiplied by threat, as a hit is a hit regardless of how you got it. But, if you were unfortunate with say the Oathsworn and you rolled 4 surges (2 reds w/ 1ea and a double blue) you'd only have 1 hit, not 4, since you had to exhaust it.

My guess is the coming up "one shot surge" effect a lot of the unreleased units have now came up as a way to do the same thing by default w/o a card to exhaust to prevent spamming it.

It was Master Crafted Weapons + Combat Ingenuity that you're thinking of. Tempered Steel is an exhaust card.

If you didn't have to exhaust TS, that would be true, but you do, so it isn't.

It's also possible that someone merely mis-spoke. In fact, quite likely.

The unique surges seem like they split the difference between standard surge abilities and something like Tempered Steel since they are limited to once per attack but don't require and action to recharge them.
