Armada Sliding Scale Graph

By Rune Taq, in Star Wars: Armada

So, do you all think that someone at FFG created a formula such as this one, or did they just eyeball it?

I am still fine with them breaking the formula to bring in an SSD, because 5' would be totally awesome as a model, but not game-practical (unfortunately). I'd still be cool with a 24"-36" SSD, but I sympathize with the counterargument.

I wish the minis were more in scale with each other. This just shows how off they are and I hadn't noticed they were all over the place.

If they were things would be both too big, and too small to represent clearly. They made the correct choice. These are not models, they are game pieces.

The models are actually scaled more by volume than length. For example, thick ships like the AF Mk2 or the Gladiator are smaller than they should (believe it or not). While long thin ships like the Nebulon, the Home One or the MC30 are bigger than they should.

Just look at the chart. Every ship on the right/down side of the curve is very voluminous and every ship on the left/top side is very thin.

In my opinion they calculate the size by length and then adjust it to what it looks better.

It is necessary for the game to be playable. Or else we would be playing on a basket ball court sized mat.

I apologies profusely if I killed armada for you.

Gonna get out my micrometer tonight and go to town taking ALL the measurements.

DO IT!!!!!

If I had time I would have. I have to travel for work to new York.

I'm sorry to hear that. My roommate commutes to NYC daily, and I about 5 minutes away from it.

Yeah. I'm in Syracuse now. Have a job in Rochester tomorrow. Then I'll drive back to mass. Long couple days but it's great for my expense check.

Civil Engineer so I go where the jobs are. All over the north east. As far as Hawaii last year. ?

Here is the graph with the SSD and Resurgent plotted to fit on the trend line.

*courtesy snip*

This makes me much more confident that we'll see a Resurgent in Armada. If they bent the scale a little bit they could get it to around 10" without too much distortion, methinks.

If that was the case, the game would be a ***********.Scale the CR90 to the ISD, and it'd be a squadron. Scale the ISD to the CR90, and it'd take up half the table.

With the play area being only 36" deep, I don't know how any ship could be playable beyond 12" in length.

I assume you meant NYC, my bad.

Well, you wouldn't want to fly it straight at the other side. :D

We're obviously not getting a 36" model. I think it would be 24" at the upper possible limit, but I can dream, can't I?

No, you can't.

Dreams are a delusional abandonment of Reality that is suited only to the Traitors of the Rebels and their ilk.

To Dream is to lack appreciation of the perfect might of the Empire.

...

You don't lack that Appreciation now... Do you?

:D

I think it is hilarious that relative to the CR90 model, an ISD would be roughly 24" (.6 m) in length. That really puts an interesting perspective to how big the ISD really is. The Super Star Destroyer would be approximately 24 feet long (7.3 m). Imagine that on your table. :)

Because it would come with an 'Epic'-scale change to the game, like 'Epic'-X-Wing, that doubles the board size.

THREE FEET OR BUST!

You'd need to make the board 6'x6' to allow it to make turns. Will be hard to reach the far side of the board :P

Or, we get a whole new set of templates, which have us move all of the other things on the board, leaving the SSD stationary. ;)

Atta Boy.

Sheesh. Its getting harder and harder to motivate these Imperial Commanders... Even this old Rebel is having a hard time...

Agreed.

I think we're just feeling despondent lately. FFG clearly loves the Rebels more, giving them all kinds of good stuff, when we used to get those. At this point, many of us are just waiting for FFG to bring out Scum, which will then eclipse us as even the second favorite, the way it went with X-Wing.

Under those circumstances, it just gets hard to crawl out of your meditation chamber to go and oppress people.

They couldn't have done the game without a sliding scale, but it could have been a lot less of a curve than it is. Scaled against the ISD mini, a cr90 should be about .75" long. The A-Wing in the x-wing game is just a bit over an inch long, and a cr90 at that size would have looked great.

I think that's a testament to the modeller's success and to the game as a whole. If you didn't notice that they were wildly out of scale, I'd say "well done!" to the designers.

Measurements are in rounded mm and are approximate. Anything over 1`50 is particularly approximate.

You mean imagine my table under it. . . I'd have 9 feet on either side of said table that is just SSD. . .
