How much retcon can L5R bear?

Hotaru couldn't even remember her husband's name, no reason she couldn't have forgotten she has a little brother or even a twin brother. They could even be in love with the same woman.

That's just a bad idea.

I thought that was what we were doing now.

The Force Awakens is better then A New Hope.

Sadly, it was not better than Star Wars.

Now get off my **** lawn.

Some of the best aspects of the original arc, especially Hoturi unknowingly killing his own son, seem to be foreclosed by the gender swap.

I must be in a minority here, but I always thought that Hoturi's story was rather weak all things considered.

Obviously that isn't going to happen this time. I wouldn't want it to. We already had that story, and it was a good one. Why would I want to hear it again?

Kachiko and Hataru are probably not going to have a happy ending. But if it's the same not-happy-ending, I will be very annoyed.

Hoturi smelled to me like he jumped out of a greek tragedy.

Yeah...and just imagine their are worse places on the internet, and reddit.

Sadly that place is one of the reasons I don't use reddit much.

Yeah, I wasn't endorsing the con arguments, just stating them to try to get the discussion focussed on the actual topic. I think that, if you are doing a setting reboot, you have to tell significantly different stories, otherwise it is not going to be very interesting. Ideally you want some thematic similarity, but not a similar sequence of events. That is one of the advantages of gender swapping Hoturi into Hotaru: it pretty much FORCES some of the plot points to go differently, even if you keep the element of the romance between the Crane champin and the wife of the Scorpion champion.

Well you are not wrong. On both counts.

Plot twist: Hoturi is the husband!

Well, I think we're at least back on topic! :D

Equal representation for men, and female privilege are a thing too. Every coin has two sides and balance must account for both. And certainly, defaming stuff like racism or sexism while being a frakking racist or sexist (which happens too often), is not the way to go for those who declare themselves as civilised.

Female privilege is really not a thing in the sociological sense of privilege, which is what's being discussed.

What people usually identify as female, "privilege," is the flip side of discrimination, and they suffer social consequences if they decline the "privilege" on offer and obstacles to other choices.

For example, it is a privilege to have the option to stay at home and raise your children while a spouse raises the children. But because of that "privilege," women suffer obstacles in the work place toward equal pay and opportunity if they choose to work full time, many of which are rooted in the presumption that men need to make more to provide for a stay at home spouse, or women aren't career minded and will leave when they have children, or whatever. There are huge cultural conversations on if and how women can "have it all," and what it takes.

Men, on the other hand, can be stay at home parents as well. It's seen as unusual, sure, but men who choose to raise children while their spouse is breadwinner are never forced to do so because their spouse, as a matter of gender, is likely to make more money and have better career opportunities. No one debates whether men can "have it all" -- a career and children -- or if men have to "lean in" or what have you.

It is two sides of the same coin in that privilege affects both men and women, but it does not do so in the same way, nor is it equal. On the positive side, if we solve the problem of privilege, we solve it for everyone! If women have equal opportunity in the work place, men will have equal opportunity to be stay at home dads.

I think it's best that FFG remain unburdened by the weight of Old5R's lore and story, and it gives new players a chance to get in on the ground floor.

We already know all the clans are remaining quintessentially the same, but this time we get to see new developments happen.

win/win.

Only if the Crane invent a woodchipper and then fall into it en masse.

And then the Crab get their hands on it, turn it over to the Kaiu, and weaponized woodchippers start dotting the length of the Wall...

What is wrong with the Crane as revealed so far?

The crane itself are the same. Rich courtesans , who favor elegance and perfection, masters of trade, and some of the finest duelest in Rokugan. None of their core traits have been changed. Story wise they are a little different (Falling into weakness because of the famine) but that doesn't change the Crane, and neither does having a gender swapped champion.

If only y'all could speak to your clan rivalries in a way that wouldn't get your heads lopped off in Rokugan . Sadane is still a thing, no? ;)

Pfft. Shiba don't fear death.

It's the only escape from the Isawa!

The Crane have Nerishma! Surely that counts for something !

The Kaiu already have the full arsenal of orcs must die traps. The lower wall is just a murder fest.

Honestly I have nothing against any clan. I just genuinely get a kick out of a good sense of humor! :D

If Crane started to throw themselves into the woodchipper, the only results would be:
1. Everyone would start doing it and it would be deemed The New More Fashionable Seppuku

2. Woodchirp remains would be instant classics and hottest form of art.

Would you rather have the Crab providing the Empire's art, Gunichi?

I mean, "Stone brick for the Kaiu Wall" was an interesting stylistic choice the first few hundred times, but they're kind of stuck in a rut...
