The event description doesn't get any more specific, but a lot of players take pride in their con-exclusive promos, and when you're able to get to a con and still not get said promos...well, I imagine it's rather frustrating and not the best first experience for what is in some ways an entirely new game.

Is it possible they'd hand out the participation promos for anyone who buys the box at GenCon as well? If they had release event promos for AGOT2.0, which seems to have had similar problems for opening event Tix, how did they handle those?

Possible, yes. Likely, I doubt it. Particularly as they're tieing promos to the Inaugural Tournament.

You only received the AGoT promo if you played in the event.
Quite frankly, it is quite impressive that Gencon allowed a 350 person tournament for a new game to begin with. And at this point, you can't just add events due to space pretty much already spoken for.
Having worked at Gencon, with a group that runs a good amount of events for it, Gencon is very strict. In the area where smaller groups run stuff, where they don't necessarily use all the tables they have reserved, you just can't expand an event using someone else's unused tables. And while FFG does have a lot of sway with Gencon, there are limits. Physical limits for one. Actual demand is another. If the tournament is a success, Gencon will definitely ask FFG to run more.
And much like I say to the X-wing players, if you are going to Gencon for ONE game, then I feel sad for you. There is just so much to do and experience. Don't limit it to one game.

Fun fact, only FFG can sell FFG games in the Exhibitor Hall.

Following FFG's sop, alt art cards and acrylic tokens.

The BGF is the Brussels Game Festival, held at the end of August in Brussels, Belgium. It's a mainly outdoor festival, with lots of demoing and playing of games.
Of course, I guess it's completely under the FFG radar, but one can dream, right?
EDIT: And I think we could even help FFG with providing staff to demo the game at the festival.
Forgot to mention something

Yes we could ! ™
Geez. The amount of entitlement some people have. I understand the disappointment of not getting a ticket, I really do, but you aso have to keep things in perspective. 50-60k people attending; super hyped new game; larger than normal space for a LCG..... they did the best they could. Some just struck out. Cant fit everybody in there.

I don't think you understand. I want the product and FFG makes it. Even though I know absolutely nothing about what it takes to run their business (or any business) or anything they do..... I know that they simply must provide me with their service. Because they are a company and that is their job. To sell their service/product. So simple!
Edited by Shu2jackValid point but new games at GenCon arent always guaranteed. In 2013, I really wanted the Firefly game and Pathfinder card game. I got neither till they hit my LGS. In 2015, Mysterium was my target. Missed that one as well till it hit retail. I expect there to be L5R cores at the booth but who knows in what quantity since 350 will be earmarked for the tourney. It just comes with the territory for GenCon. Nothing is guaranteed.
I know I was glad I had a friend pick up Netrunner for me a few years ago.

Frag that! If this is how storyline events are going to be run then what good is supporting the game?
Could you perhaps elaborate on what you mean by 'if this is how storyline events are going to be run', please?

Having to lottery into story events is going to get really old really fast.

So what you want is for FFG to stop doing events at Gencon then?

I want to play Legend of the Five Rings not pick 3. Oh man the Koteis/Topaz/Imperial wedding sold out ten seconds in ticket selection is not a phrase i want to be constantly uttering.

You do realize that the lottery was a gencon exclusive thing, right? You're going on and on over something that FFG literally has no control over how gencon does gencon ticketing. Try and keep up, plz.
Cool still doesn't allay my concern that i need a ticket bot just to play.

I'm not here to 'allay' any concern of yours. I'm saying that you're being dumb for thinking that one event of the year dictates how all events will be.
I don't have a ticket bot and I got tickets to all 5 FFG events I had on my wish list.
There will be NUMEROUS store championships as well as koteis and regionals that won't have gencon's ticketing system. If you can't see that, then there's no help for ya. Sry.
To be fair to FFG, in their other games they have started to move important, premier events away from Gencon and into other Cons. Nationals is being held at a different con this year. So, they have taken measures for tournament-level accomodations.
I do think FFG and some other companies have realized that GenCon is now "US Essen" and they try to avoid GenCon when scheduling their big events. However, L5R being brand new and in prerelease, its a no brainer to have something big planned to "sell" the game. Its disheartening that so many will be left out, especially since there are story implications involved, but I don't forsee this problem after the game is released.

Aaaaah the wonders of a scarcity based economy, aren't physical objects the best?

In other words you want L5R to be successful, but not so successful that you don't get to play?

Or it could, much more charitably, be interpreted as a desire for the support for the game to match the demand. It helps significantly with growth as well, letting your fans be involved.
