Sold Out

One Story line event for a game that is literally shaped by player interaction for twenty some odd years and one grinder (which also sold out) with no demos or side competitions doesn't exactly show me that they want to run a robust Legend of the Five Rings scene. I came to Gencon to play L5R and all I have scheduled is a fourth edition module.

Ffg has open demos for their games. Not something scheduled like some. They do tons of demos every year. If you want to play there will be lots of opportunities.

Well, they probably shouldn't have a storyline tournament thats going to be limited in such a fashion. Game is going to be scarce as it is and only people who hit the lottery will have a shot at choosing the Emerald Champion. But it is what it is. The thing that hurts is that about 50% of the players that compete in these tournaments will not compete in future tournaments, as this is the "ooohh impulse buy" game of GenCon this year.

It's 350! That's not limited. There is also zero evidence for what the story prize might entail.

Friday is the story tourney.. at 100

Nope. Email for Friday says nothing about story. Thursday tournament email mentions story prizes.

Are you seriously trying to imply that some people have more right than others t o participate in a card game about magical samurai?

"No true L5R fan should stand for the unwashed masses playing in our beloved playground!"

Honestly, L5R has never been as limited to such a small group of people as it will be at this GenCon.

Like I get that none of us who got left out of Thursday are happy, but this is ridiculous. This is the largest LCG launch EVER.

Could / should they have done something bigger? Maybe, but GenCon's archaic event system isn't FFG's fault.

Its not FFG's fault that Gencon is too large for itself and creates these limiting circumstances. But FFG does have control over the events they schedule. I think the 350 prerelease event is fine. I think the 120 casual event is fine. But a 100 person storyline event with implications? Its not like this is the AGoT Kingslayer prerelease... this is a live, story interactive event.

It's not like the fact there were only 100 spots wasn't know before today. Am I happy that I didn't get into the Friday tournament? Nope. Doesn't mean it's FFG's Fault.

Unfortunately the story event is Thursday. The Friday email has no mention of story elements.

I agree Friday and Sunday could use more seats but then FFG may have a stock issue - may.

If I never see another storyline event ever again, it would be too soon. Almost every single bad thing that happened to the old L5R Story was because of them.

(The rest was Shawn Carman's fault.)

That's not limited. How many times people need to point that this is basically the largest launch for a LCG ever before people stop saying such nonsense?

I just looked up the 2013 gencon l5r event and there were 70 people. I'm not quite sure how 350 or 100 is more limited

Thats people who played the game, not people who wanted to play the game. Anyone could join grinders to make the Saturday cut at gencon, its just that perhaps the game wasn't as popular in 2013. At this point, people are being turned away.

And the Friday event has a saturday cut. If that is not the storyline event, why would the people on Friday suffer a Saturday morning cut if the prize would be weaker than the one granted on Thursday. That is just ludicrous.

Yeah I don't know what the deal is with Friday but no mention of story in the email while Thursday's clearly states a story prize.

Anyway hope more people can get in and the ridiculous scalper situation is handled - GenCon's forum response was a complete non-answer "only two tix per account are allowed..." yes but the issue is FRIENDS. Easy to put 5, 10, 15 people on your friends list and get "their tickets" mailed to you. That's the issue with their system.

Yeah, that's not something you can do.

Unless those people on your friends list have badges you can't purchase tickets for them. It's a two per badge limit regardless of how many people are on your friends list.

Has it been confirmed that the tournament is to decide the Emerald Champion?

That's totally something you can do, I just tried it with another game - 4 tix in cart. All I have to do is submit, so unless it blocks me at the point of sale it's possible.

Your friends need a valid badge, yes. As long as you have up to 50 friends with badges who let you get tix for them you can get that many spots.

If you work in the industry that's probably not hard to do.

Now, I don't think this is some huge conspiracy - I just think GenCon's event registration sucks :P

I know a lot of folks are upset with a common response being that FFG should just make more space, but that Event hall is pretty **** packed. Plus FFG has to utilize the space they are allotted for their full game demos, X-Wing (massive turnouts), Armada (lots of table space), and I would assumed Rune Wars this year (another game that takes up a fair bit of table space). Now I do agree that if a game is selling very slowing for their spots they could take from them and move to the events with a lot more demand (I'm looking at you Netrunner), but they may also have time constraints on the space as well based on the number of rounds the turnout would require. Who knows. We'll see what they do. I was at the Netrunner launch, it was awful. I was at the Thrones Launch, it was better, but still hard to come by sets which sold out quickly. This game already feels like a much stronger launch than either of those previous games which means they are learning from past mistakes, but they can't please everyone. Nothing was more frustrating that the Netrunner launch watching guys walking around with 6-8 core sets snapping photos and listing them on eBay.

Lets see what unfolds over the next couple weeks.

I clicked the button after the countdown timer went to zero. Stared at the screen for a few minutes... Didn't do anything so I thought I ****** up so I went back and clicked the button again. Got in queue at 845. Purchased every single l5r event as well as everything else on my wishlist! :D

Can't wait to see everyone out there and cluttering tables with all these fckn tokens! :D

I think I am allowed to hate you just a little. 0 for 4. Clicked less than a minute after you. :P

I want to ambush you, destroy your event tickets, ring of water home.

No

If they made the tournament prize the Emerald Champ I would be very happy and most surprised they start with such a big choice...

If they are going to have a big choice then gencom is the location to have it. I expct to see rather less storyline choices elsewhere (i.e lots and lots of Koteis each with big storyline choices)

Worlds/big-conventions are the only locations that should have defining story choices imo

My surprise comes less from the event itself and more from a timing, to allow such a big choice to be determined by an 'untested' product that has seen no general play and hardly time to settle down could be great, but also cause potential headaches and issues if not handled well....
