My surprise comes less from the event itself and more from a timing, to allow such a big choice to be determined by an 'untested' product that has seen no general play and hardly time to settle down could be great, but also cause potential headaches and issues if not handled well....

It's not "untested" for playtesters. XD

Hence the quotation marks... hopefully everything is nicely balanced and things work out well.

It'll be fully spoiled before GenCon, right?

They released too few Destiny boosters an Arkham packs. I'm not talking about the GenCon space (since I will never have the chance to go there), but about the items.

What big choice ? We don't know the story choice yet. How about we do this crazy thing and wait for facts.

Wait. Why would anyone want to do that? :D

In this and many other threads doesn't seem a requirement. Just people freaking out and cancelling entire trips now.

Please note the original post I made...

If they made the tournament prize the Emerald Champ I would be very happy and most surprised they start with such a big choice...

The 2nd comment had everything to do why I would be surprised....

So no I have made no comment in any way expecting it to happen or even saying it would happen.

I'm pretty sure everything is superb balanced like in all other LCG's Core Set environment.

Well, I can understand people freaking out and cancelling out their whole trip. Some people really only wanted to go to play L5R.

Not everyone is willing to spend 3-4 days playing all kinds of games, be a part of the celebration of the 50 years of GenCon, and see and test beforehand large numbers of games.

Some people only want to get their hands on the L5R core set (or three) and start playing the game they've loved and played for up to 20+ years.

I understand both these philosophy. Had I planned my holidays around GenCon to attend the big L5R release, I'd be tempted to cancel traveling plans as well if I was not guaranteed a spot in the tournament and the 3 necessary core sets. If I have to buy the 3 core sets at my FLGS, I see no point in spending around 2000€ to attend GenCon, even if it's its 50th anniversary; considering I'm a father since mid-march and we moved house two days ago.

Well, all that I take from this thread is that Asmodée should cancel its pre-release event at GenCon and come do it in Brussels Game Festival at the end of August instead. I'm sure we can find some space if there aren't enough at GenCon.

Haha i cant read kempys posts but boy i can imagine his salty comments when he saw that everything is sold and people are fighting for more.

Is this justice? Yes it is.

Is salt healthy? Yes, in reasonable quantity. I hope he replenishes his bodily reserves because crying this much IS NOT GOOD

The BGF team should definitely contact Asmodee/FFG to at least set some demo up and sell some core sets. :D

I'd love that, even without any (story or not) tournament.

I'm pretty resigned to see most, if not all, story decisions to be taken exclusively in North America. That's why the outcry about the "limited space" for this storyline tournament makes me raise my eyebrow (© AEG Storyteam) pretty hard.

The Koteis will most likely be the story impact events and they will be in Europe as well. Think of it along the lines of the X-Wing Open Series of events.

I too find "limited space" an odd thing to say. 350 is hardly a small event especially for a single day event.

Like at every previously released LCG premiere. XD

ROTFL.

Anyway i'm really wondering how they're going to fit 300+ players tourney in 8 hrs? If it's pure swiss only it will be kind of great lottery.

I intended and forgot to add a word to my sentence which change its meaning. It was about major story decisions. With how the players' influence on storyline has been described (and I'm all in favor of having less influence in the hand of players and more control in the hands of the storyteam if it prevents a lot of the silly/stupid decisions taken in AEG's time), I'm not expecting any meaningful decision in Kotei/European tournaments. It will reserved for GenCon.

Maybe I'm wrong, and I'd happy to be, but I'll believe it when I'll see it. Even more so since in France, for LCG, "thanks" to Edge, we are not directly linked to FFG, and here, neither Edge nor Asmodée has been really trustworthy on tournaments organization. So, maybe it's a french problem more than a european one then.

Why GenCon only? So there's no place for big impactful tourneys in Europe? Even AEG switched World Championships to be in Europe every second year.

Worlds in November would be more likely than North American championships at GenCon.

Thats people who played the game, not people who wanted to play the game. Anyone could join grinders to make the Saturday cut at gencon, its just that perhaps the game wasn't as popular in 2013. At this point, people are being turned away.

And the Friday event has a saturday cut. If that is not the storyline event, why would the people on Friday suffer a Saturday morning cut if the prize would be weaker than the one granted on Thursday. That is just ludicrous.

My guess is that the winner of the friday cut will get a free pass to participate in worlds. In the past, their other lcgs with cuts have done that.

Yeah, they did and it was after a long time. However, FFG is not AEG and AFAIK (I may be ill-informed so don't hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong), they never put a world championship for any of their LCG outside of USA. So, currently, until I see something that shows that I'm wrong, I don't trust them yet to not repeat this with L5R.

Once again, I may be ill-informed but they strike me as a very NA-centric company (which is understandable as the majority of their customers is there) so we'll have to see if they intend to give other regions equal treatment.

Probably, but since it's still in USA, it doesn't really change anything to my point.

In fine, for me, it doesn't really matter though, since I'll probably never be able to play at the level of winning major tournaments. My first post didn't intend to cause an argument over this, it was just to show that some of the complaints were pretty ridiculous.

You might wanna look in to their other games especially X-Wing. Will help you learn and educate yourself on them. Europe has had the largest X-Wing events ever.

Worlds will always be in Minnesota in November for L5R. That will never change location. But they have added a lot more events out of NA.

They've started doing European Championships with card design as a prize, so they're getting somewhat better (not to AEG's level, though, since they keep Worlds in their center). However, I'm not sure the majority of their customers are in NA. I don't have access to their sales numbers, but there are a lot of players in Europe.

My understanding is that world's is held in their hq. It's not a NA vs Europe thing. However I thought they started providing airfare and hotel accommodations to the people who have qualified for world's
