Returning player, what have I missed?

By Nyxen, in Star Wars: Armada

Title says it all, I haven't played since wave 2, but have been casually keeping my eye on the game since. Any advice on what to grab or avoid ( I only own Empire) and is The Impstar still good?

Well, we're about 1 month away from release of wave 6, with a shiny new light carrier for the imperials. Expect to see many imperial fighter-based fleets trying out the new toys.

The triple ISD list from wave 2 is largely dead. Single ISDs, supported by 3-4 lighter ships, can be successful, especially if you also pack squadrons.

Do you buy rebel ships for upgrades? The Rebel Liberty expansion has a Turbolaser upgrade (spinal armament), the Pelta expansion has an anti-fighter ordnance (flechette torpedoes), and the rebel transport has a largely useless flotilla-only upgrade. (repair crews)

If you have a Rebel-playing friend, buy a corellian conflict expansion, and split the new aces. (2 new uniques for each wave 1 fighter in that pack)

I haven't yet bought any rebels past the core, the price per box has been a little intimidating relative to X-Wing. That being said, I saw some new generic fighters (the bombers with grit in particular), are those in the Corellian Conflict as well?

The good:

  • Lots of new ships and squadrons! That fill unique and specialist roles!
  • Lots of new upgrades have improved some older ships, in particular the Nebulon-B Frigate.
  • Imperials are not 100% reliant on Rhymer to be competitive! Yay!
  • Flotillas have opened up lots of options on both sides to even out the activation game and improve the effectiveness of non-Rogue squadrons
  • Corellian Conflict has added lots of great new squadrons and tons of new objectives that are fun and exciting to play
  • Rebels are now equal or superior to Imperials in top-tier competition

The bad:

  • It feels like you need flotillas to be effective in competition play on both sides, due to the activation mechanics
  • Rieekan has gotten out of hand, due to the large number of unique squadrons added by Crellian Conflict. Rebels can field an entire fleet of zombie ships and squadrons
  • Some ships and squadrons still feel under-developed. Right now it's probably the VSD (still) and the Pelta Frigate, but hopefully this will be fixed soon.
  • No-squadron fleets are almost unplayable now in competition, with 1-2 unusual exceptions that rely on doing things that may not feel lore-friendly

The Corellian Compaign doesn't actually coem with any new models, just new base dials for the Rebel 1 and Imperial 1 squadron packs. The squadrons you saw are in the new Rebel 2 and Imperial 2 squadron packs - I'm guessing you're referring to the Lancers.

I was looking at the Gamma Squadron TIE Bomber and didn't realize it was a unique generic, interesting concept.

The ugly?

The ugly is that the SSD hasn't been released in playmat or epic size format.

Some people hate squads, some people hate flotilla, most hate Rieekan currently. Business as usual.

Rieekan is just obscene....

However wait a few weeks and Leia will be the real trouble maker....being able to command 4 squadrons with a gr75 is HUGE.

This, you missed Flotillas, Rymer Ball and Intel.
