Upgrading difficult your dice

By Wizardeddas, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Me and my group have bee not having a blast playing a f&d homebrew game for a little while now but we ar all new to this system and I have a quick question.

When it comes to difficulty dice, I like to have my players roll them when I'm attacking them, and vice versa.

inrecently had the most fight someone with an adversary rating of 3.

that means I up the difficulty of the players attacks against him by 3 right? So a difficulty of 2 purple becomes 2 red 1 purple correct?

If that's is correct, my players asked how they could go about upgrading the difficulty of attack s against them.

we did find defensive stance which says it upgrades the difficulty of attacks against them by . So that would make their 2 purple go to 1 red 1 purple correct?

what are some other ways they could upgrade the difficulty of attacks against them?

thank you.

There are a number of defensive talents example

Dodge - as an incidental pay 1 strain per rank of dodge to upgrade an incoming combat check

Defensive stance Pay 1 strain per rank of defensive stance and a maneuver to upgrade all melee checks until your next turn.

Side Step pay 1 strain per rank of Side step and a maneuver to upgrade all ranged attacks until your next turn

Sense -defensive upgrade for force ability, upgrade 1 or 2 attacks until your next turn either 1 or 2 times and commit a force die after activating

Baleful Gaze - pay a destiny point as an incidental to upgrade a check no further than medium range a number of times equal to ranks in Coercion

Coordination Dodge - pay a destiny point to add failure equal to ranks in coordination to incoming combat check.

im sure there are plenty I missed here.

Bodyguard pay 1 strain per rank of body guard to upgrade the combat checks made against an engaged ally until your next turn.

Parry pay 3 strain to block parry ranks+2 dmg against melee attacks

Reflect pay 3 strain to block reflect ranks+2 dmg against range attacks

although we are moving away from upgrades, my personal favourite is Baleful Gaze, but it's weakness is longer range attacks. Dodge has to be the best catch all as it works against all attacks (as does Coordination Dodge. It becomes a rock paper scissors situation.

Using a Destiny Point is the easiest way for a player to upgrade attacks against a PC, but it only works for 1 upgrade and is really quite expensive.

As mentioned above Dodge, Side Step, Defensive Stance Baleful Gaze and Sense are the other ways to upgrade incoming attacks, each with their own trade offs and draw backs.

There is also the Intuitive Evasion talent for starfighter combat.

As Richard mentioned starfighter combat, evasive maneuvers is a cheap maneuver to upgrade attacks against you and you can take it twice per turn too.

Thats going to reduce system strain fast though.

Indeed it does. One of the reasons why hotshots excel when piloting single seater fighters. Double maneuvers are imho essential in starship combat to gain an edge and high-g training allows you to take the system strain as strain instead. Makes the strain and system strain management a lot easier even when burning through 6 strain per turn can be quite demanding on the character. :)

The g-suit helps here somewhat and naturally ships with astromech can deal much easier with the system strain by just repairing it via damage control. :)

The squadron leader from AoR has 2 ranks of defensive driving... granted that it adds black dice rather than changing purple to read while piloting. But that's still crazy useful. Me thinks a cyborg (i.e. probably gank), operator squadron leader makes 5he best 2 spec pilot because it gets offensive driving + 2 ranks defensive driving which have crazy good synergy, put that pilot in an aggressor assault fighter and watch out
