The card does not grant you the ability to take free actions, it does grant you a free action. So nope, no free actions for huge ships. ;-)

It does not have to grant the ability to take free actions in total, but it does allow you to preform a free boost or barrel action in response to that specific trigger.

FFG accounted for RAW/RAI pedantry with the golden rule.

Now if you say so, I am totally convinced. Feel free to use cards which grant free actions in your epic games. Afterall, those cards are literally the only source for free actions in the game and totally overrule the huge ships rules. ;-)

The rule in regards to Huge ships being granted free actions is obvious to prevent interaction with other cards that grant Free Actions. However, if there were a official pilot card for the Raider that said, "After performing a maneuver, you may perform a Target Lock as a free action," or similar, if someone were to argue that the card did nothing due to Huge ships not being able to take Free Actions, it would be the highest form of pedantry and lack of common sense to not grasp that it was overriding the existing rule on the book for that specific instance and not overall.

Fenn and Talonbane together in defenders or phantoms. Could have 2 ps11 phantoms that throw 6 dice at range 1, with 5 range 1 agility for fenn and 6 range 3 greens for talonbane

Not actually that great. Howls ability doesn't work for herself, and if you're spending that much on her ship you're rather limited in how many other ships you can take alongside her to use the ability.

Come to think of it, an Academy Pilot in a JM5K would be great - 20 points for an amazing ship in every aspect.

Mauler Mithel in a Phantom would be a nasty 6 dice attack at R1, plus PS9 with VI.

Jake Farrell in a YT2400 is a super maneuverable ship

Yes, but, it has a large base, so it's easier to stay within range 1, and she's much more survivable. And you could still get 3-4 cheap ships with her. Put her in a a Decmiator, and people would either have to focus on taking her down to reduce the ability, and risk getting plugged by the miniswarm she's with, or, focus on the miniswarm and get torn up by the rest of them, and her.

Norra Wexley on a Jumpmaster. K4+R4 Agro. Add in Mindlink to be able to trigger her ability on both offense and defense every round
