Ideas for prizes

By IG88E, in X-Wing

We have acrylic stuff in all forms. Action tokens, range rulers, bombs, maneuver templates etc. We have coins, medal, dicebags, ... Then we have a lot of different dice, which I guess are the most prefered prizes

Some ideas for good prizes?

I would like to see following prizes:

*** Ship model with different paint scheme (maybe Top 4 Nationals or Regionals winner). Could also be for example a semi-destroyed TIE-Fighter or other ship

*** A collection of alternatively designed damage cards for collecting purposes. You get one on each opportunity and you can aim to fill complete collection. Would be nice to "collect" something to have it full after a time.

*** New colored pegs (small or large). Very short one, so you can pile them under a ship. The more wins, the higher the ship and the effect :)

*** Laser with logo to measure firing arcs (maybe only Top 4 Nationals or Worlds)

*** Special plastic maneuver dials

*** Acryl token to label ship position (corner)

*** Special maneuver template for moving ships differently (putting on the side of the ship if neccessary)

*** Dice shaker/box

*** Metal ship base (one of my personal favourites)

*** Badges! Nice gimmick to handle like promotions ;)

Ideas? Thoughts?

Wrestling belt.

I'd like to see more prizes for things besides finishing at the top.

Only having top prizes means it's mostly the same players winning all the loot while everyone else gets stuck with the alt art cards.

Cup coasters.

I'm not kidding. We got those at Endor Open 2015 and it's by far the most used promo item in my collection.

I see what you mean. But is it not the definition of prize? To earn it somehow? Ok you can make prizes for example for best newcomer, but it is hard to define who is a beginner and who is a pro.

I think a couple random picked (door prizes) would work best.

Brighten the day of someone who had a bad showing but got picked for a acrylic ruler or tokens or coin or whatever.

Something a local tournament did was have prized for players who fulfilled conditions (like rolled most evades in one round) these prizes won't necessarily go to the best, or the worst, but everyone can win them. you could have one prize be something like metal evade tokens for the player that rolls the most green blanks, or target locks for the most red blanks etc.. I like these more as they won't go the the winner, but they will go to players who feel shortchanged by dice or something.

EDIT: I found the Article about the examples! http://www.backtodials.com/tos-report-colorado-store-wars-2015-by-jon-conley/

Yeah, but the alt art cards are the only really cool prizes they give out. The rest is just more clutter.

Ugh, my first tournament was fun and I did better than I hoped, but the Alt Art Tactician card was a disappointment. Never used the card before, and probably won't. Now I feel obliged to force it into a list somewhere.

And what are the standards for these? Oh hooray! You're moving on to WizKids like "special" prizes that are ONLY available in tournaments. That "special maneuver template" really sounds like a great prize to win when it will let you move in ways that no one else can regardless of what ship you are using.

Maybe like metal spaceships?

Yeah, mechanically different prizes for tournaments is among the worst ideas ever created for gaming.

Er, what's wrong with tokens to label ship bases? In fact they're already prizes at the continental championships.

And I think OP meant templates that do the same moves, but in a different way - like how people already measure straights from the corner if there are ships in the way.

Dear god, do not take a lead from WizKids... Attack Wing alone should serve as a giant warning on how not to do prizes, or even tournament support in general.

If we're talking FFG direct support, alt-art stuff is kind of the most practical and interesting stuff they do, and there's still a wealth of cards they can cover. I also rather like the new R2D2/IA combo card they've come out with for the anniversary set, and would definitely be happy to see more like that in future. I would be a lot happier if they put some more thought into what alt-art cards they do, though. The majority I've gotten have either been for pilots that barely see use (Hera, last year, was literally being given away because nobody wanted them), or the art on the card just looks so jarring, you don't want to use it (Bossk, Dash... etc). The odd one is great, and genuinely worth fighting for (Disco Vader is glorious. Soontir was a real prize for whoever got it). I'd argue for more generics, honestly.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw debris/asteroid tokens to get the acrylic treatment in the future. They seem to be the only cardboard left to upgrade.

I'm honestly surprised they haven't done fancy card sleeves at this stage. They have an entire library of clear sleeves, but a pack of either tournament commemorative sleeves ("Regional Championships 20XX" + logo) or simply a mixed pack of fancy faction logos.

What tokens are you talking about? If you're talking about the ones that go ON the bases to identify the ship and provide firing arcs then that's standard equipment. The way I read it is as some kind of special outside marker that you'd put down next to the ship.

I'm sorry but there is only one way to properly use the templates. You CAN NOT measure straights from the corners of a ship; you MUST use the nubs to get things right. It sure would be nice if I could just measure my maneuver from the corner of the ship that would NOT come close to that asteroid I may, or may not, hit if I actually did things the right way.

Tokens to mark a ship when you're temporarily removing it. The red things here.

And, uh, sure you can. You just need to put the ship back in the corresponding place. It's exactly the same as if you'd done it the proper way, but saves you the trouble of marking a ship right in front of you. If the template might overlap an asteroid then yeah, obviously you do it properly. But otherwise there's no difference.

Sure you can. I see people do that all the time. It's functionally identical with straights. The only problem is when people don't realize that it doesn't work for banks and turns.

I'd like to see ships made out of different materials like bronze for top and bottom places in every regionals. That'd be something to strive for - an engraved, polished metal Ghost or Falcon legal for tournament play.

Git gud?

How about $1,000,000 cash? That would be a good prize.

How much do you like flying meta lists? Because I can guarantee you, they will be as omnipresent as social prejudice.
