Hey are you heading to one of these Store Championships this weekend?

  • 27th - Twisted Cauldron - Folkestone, UK
    • Comic Kingdom - Reno, NV
    • GTS Barcelon - Barcelona, Spain
  • 28th - Red Castle Games - Portland, OR
    • Sanctuary Gaming Centre - Mansfield, UK

Hey Schmitty, it was wonderful meeting you at the Red Castle Store Championship.

I'm not sure what the first place winner ran but since that is you, you can fill that in.

I'm the newbie who took second (which completely surprised me). Here is my list:

Mon Mothma Attempt
Faction: Rebel Alliance
Points: 393/400

Commander: Mon Mothma

Assault Objective: Most Wanted
Defense Objective: Fire Lanes
Navigation Objective: Sensor Net

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Foresight ( 8 points)
- Major Derlin ( 7 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- X17 Turbolasers ( 6 points)
- Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
= 93 total ship cost

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63 points)
- Admonition ( 8 points)
- Lando Calrissian ( 4 points)
- Ordnance Experts ( 4 points)
- Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points)
= 84 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- Jainas Light ( 2 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)
= 53 total ship cost

CR90 Corvette A (44 points)
- Turbolaser Reroute Circuits ( 7 points)
= 51 total ship cost

[ flagship ] GR-75 Medium Transports (18 points)
- Mon Mothma ( 30 points)
- Bright Hope ( 2 points)
- Comms Net ( 2 points)
= 52 total ship cost

2 E-Wing Squadrons ( 30 points)
2 VCX-100 Freighters ( 30 points)

Things I learned or notes about my games and my list. It will be in bullet point format because I am tired.

1) Comms Net was useless. I just spammed Squadron commands anyways. I had this idea I'd send over a token now and then, it never happened.

2) VCXs were what kept me alive and/or gave me the win in most games. My first game which I lost 8-3 was not 9-2 I am pretty sure because I grabbed more Sensor Net info. It was the Armada version of Rogue One. I got all the sensor data I needed but lost both my MC30s and some other stuff. In the second game (8-3 with me being the 8) I racked up twice as many Fire Lanes tokens as my opponent. While the third game (9-2 for me) I threw two mines from minefield over to close off my opponents choices of movement and he took one of them for two points of damage. These were key units for me.

3) E-Wings were interesting. I used Snipe a bit in games 1 & 3 to some effect, while in game two I had to throw them in to make sure I took out Rhymer and slowed down his bomber ball from eating Admonition. I could have used one more squadron but then I would need another ship to command them.

4) I think all of the fleets I faced were 4 ships, so having 5 was nice. All of mine and all of my opponents ran combat ships, there was no flotilla just to pad out activations. The flotillas were light carriers in all four lists (mine and my 3 opponents) and everything else we ran was there to punch someone in the face.

5) I still don't know the calculus of placing obstacles. I just put them down with kind of an idea or trying to hem in my opponents choices. I don't think it ever works.

6) I did do a good job of choosing objectives the two times I took first player, in all instances it ended up being ones with strategic tokens for me to manipulate.

7) I made lots of little mistakes and one or two decent sized ones in my first game. I'm still learning. I'd only played at 400 points once before and at 300 five times.

8) First time playing against considerable fighters. I think my opponents all ran 8+ fighters with aces often. Facing that many fighters was nerve wracking having not done so before.

9) Foresight with Derlin is not as amazing as I wish. Yes, it is amazing but in two of my games my opponent got a couple shots on it and just took Foresight out with not a lot of effort. I could have flown it better, especially in the first match.

I will be deconstructing what I did wrong and what went well for a while. For my first tournament and some of my first 400 point games I'm just stunned I got second but feel like I've gotten more of a handle on the objectives and strategic elements of the game but need to get better still at maneuvering and judging distances. Everyone I played against were amazing sports and incredibly nice and those I didn't play against were fun to chat with during those brief moments between ships pew-pewing at each other.

I look forward to gitting gudder.

Great to meet you as well. Congrats on the finish, the fleet you had took some skill to use and it looks like you played it well.

I am putting together the Reno information now and I will send it out. I have one list I need still and we are good to go. Just a heads up, Cracken with a CR90 swarm took first for us.
