Pre Store Tournament

By player2450481, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hello everyone,

I have been playing Imperial Assault for a couple months, and have recently been getting into competitive play. However, it's challenging to play competitively when there is only one other person to play against at our local hobby store. Anyways, I have decided to sign up for a store tournament in August (located in a different store). I was wondering if you guys could review my list, provide tips to prepare, and any advice for practicing before the event, (I currently play games by myself if the other person isn't available lol).

Current List:

Bossk (with Prey on the Weak)-9

eWeequay Pirate X2-14

Onar Koma-6

Vinto Hreeda-5

Gideon Argus-3

Temporary Alliance-1

C-3PO-2

Command Cards:

Glory of the Kill-1

Primary Target-1

Wild Attack-0

Take Initiative-0

Run for Cover-2

Assassinate-3

Positioning Advantage-0

Negation-1

Tools for the Job-2

Trandoshan Terror-2

To the Limit-0

Single Purpose-1

Heightened Reflexes-2

Shoot the Messenger-0

Element of Surprise-0

Any advice is appreciated I'm just looking to retain more information about IA and hopefully, one day become competitive enough to play at worlds.

Thanks,

Looks good. Where's Draw?

I wouldn't use Bossk. He just doesn't get it done when you need him to sometimes. Instead you could play Shyla who is arguably straight up better, and then you get a point back for a good upgrade like Black Market or Devious Scheme.

You also free up some command card points by ditching Bossk, letting you bring better cards. You should definitely play Tough Luck and Squad Swarm with double pirates. Strength in Numbers is also not bad with Vinto+Pirates or Vinto + Onar. You probably won't want To the Limit anymore without Bossk either.

If you want to get practice, I recommend checking out Vassal. You can even play with the world champion pretty easily. Check out the Boardwars.eu discord channel for trying to find players if nobody is on the Vassal client.

I'll second Vassal as a great spot to play when you can't find anyone locally. The interface does take a little getting used to but will it will definitely up your game.

Yes, I agree that sometimes Bossk lets me down; but for the most part, he has the ability to deal a lot of damage. However, I will try out Shyla and see if I prefer her over Bossk. (I was wondering why more lists don't include him, but it may just be the other person I play against).

I have actually downloaded Vassel and had no idea what was going on. I did find a few Youtube videos that kinda helped, but I still feel pretty overwhelmed with it.

I didn't even think to put that in my deck.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's been challenging to find out what's going on haha. Is there a guide that shows how to use Vassel properly?

People are pretty chill. Just sign on and see if someone will walk you through it. But definitely watch @thereisnotry's video first as it explains a lot. I have just gotten into it and people helped me out a lot.

Right there with you on that. I downloaded Vassal and tried to play some X-wing. I'm sure there's helpful people on there, but I didn't find them that night.

It seemed like a dos system with clunkyness, I probably need to give it another try but wasn't too encouraged.

Re: Vassal. I wasn't sold on it my first couple attempts, but if you actually follow along with the tutorial, it's fairly easy to learn. If you have half an hour to follow along, it's worth it.

Also, in Vassal the IA space/grid system is much less involved than X-Wing's maneuver template system.

Yeah, I will try it again tonight. I tried to play a game last night, but still am really confused.

Exactly it's real...clunky and really hard to maneuver. Did they make it this way to actually simulate like you are actually playing face to face with someone?

Does he have a newer video out? The first one that I watched is from 2015.

I'm going to have someone show me in person how to operate Vassel. I've watched some tutorials and still don't feel confident in playing yet.

Hi, I'm the guy who makes the Vassal mod.

So far I haven't made any other video tutorials for how to play IA Skirmish on Vassal, beyond my first one from 2015. It's on my list of things to-do, but unfortunately I also need a quiet house in which to record the video and...that hasn't happened "in a long, long time...a long time."

Another reason I haven't recorded a new video was because I've been working on so many extra upgrades to the mod, that any video would be mostly outdated shortly after it was released. However, I think I'm now at the point where there's not a lot more that I can do to make things work better, so I'll see about getting a new tutorial video up soon.
