Imperial Ruthlesness

By Hotziggety, in X-Wing Squad Lists

How viable is a list that leans on Ruthlesness? I was thinking about the following:

TIE Defender: · Colonel Vessery (35)
Ruthlessness (3)
Tractor Beam (1)
TIE/D (0)
TIE Defender: Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)
Ruthlessness (3)
Tractor Beam (1)
TIE/D (0)
TIE Avanced Prototype: Baron of the Empire (19)
Ruthlessness (3)
TIE/v1 (1)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

TIE/D with tractor beam and ruthlessness is brutal as ****.

But if you are facing super dash and Miranda (or most 2 ship lists -though I'm sure Manaroo lists hate ruthlessness almost as much as Biggs lists do) you've just lost 9 points from your list.

I don't have much exposure - why is the Ruthlessness + Tractor Beam combo more brutal than other cannons? Is it the price-point or what?

Tractor beams if they hit, can cause damage by parking the target on a rock. Ruthlessness kicks in and causes a damage to a ship in range one. The target is now -1 agility, so the 3 dice primary cause more damage to target. Now another ship in range 1 gets a damage.

You've got 2 of these in the list. Say Biggs is hiding behind Nora. You hit Biggs with Tractor, give Nora 1 damage, hit Biggs with primary, give Nora another damage: repeat with the other /D. Biggs is probably on an asteroid and dead at this point and Nora has 4 points of damage on her. Now your Baron finishes off Biggs, putting a 5th damage on Nora.

Brutality.

You move them then check range for ruthlessness.

Biggs lists hate a Ruthless D.

Well that's what I was hoping to try to do with the list but wasn't sure if it was too gimmicky. I was thinking that even if it faced large ships, it would still be able to potentially strip their agility and push damage through.

Typo

I used Vessery with an Ion Cannon and Ruthlessness at my local CAC event for fun.ugly ugly ugly. Made mince meat out of twin Mist Hunters and Bossk. Swarms we're hiring as well. Even Big ships had a hard time getting away from each other with some smart flying to either push them together or they get blocked. Effective

How do you fly your own ships with Ruthlessness? Do you spread them out in case, or rely on being able to get the enemy into Range 1 of each other?

Kind o depends on what your flying and what they are. You may have to eat a shot if your not careful or just to finish another ship off. With my Vess Ions I was able to stay back enough make it work most of the time and not hurt another friendly ship

Oh god.. I didn't realize the timing of that.

This is something I need to try. How does it hold up against anything meta? I imagine it melts pretty fast if you make a mistake. The lack of x7 makes me really nervous...

Another word on the timing, if i recall correctly: ruthlessness and the TB movement occur simultaneously, so you can choose to apply the damage before it after the reposition, giving you options.

As for being worried over a lack of x/7, you're trading off an evade for superior offense, its still behind a 3/3/3 frame, and they can slow roll on their banks to keep range early.

I'm not a fan of self damage, but ruthlessness has me thinking:

TIE/sf Fighter: · "Quickdraw" (29)
Wired (1)
Fire Control System (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)
Primed Thrusters (1)
TIE Avanced Prototype: · The Inquisitor (25)
Push The Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
TIE/v1 (1)
TIE/sf Fighter: · "Backdraft" (27)
Ruthlessness (3)
Fire Control System (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)

I love this list. I've been playing X-Wing a little over two years now and started playing with just one buddy of mine every month or so in the beginning. For the majority of the time it was just the two of us playing over a night (and into the early morning, finishing with a game of Epic) of beer and pizza. I started going to LGS tournaments last fall and have gotten more serious recently, but every month or so we still get together to battle.

Long story short, for at least one of the battles (and usually the first one) he'll play T-65 X-wings with Biggs and I would love to play this Ruthlessness build against him just to counter his anti-range 1 attacks against his squadron to throw Range 1 Ruthlessness damage in his face.

Just do it the one time.

Man this sounds like a nasty list! I've been playing Ryad with an Ion Cannon with TIE/D. It's a combo that's been working great for me in the few games I've played (I managed to ion the Ghost right off the board the other night) Adding in the Ruthlessness sounds like a little icing on the cake!

Where does I snag that card?

I know you can pick up two in the Decimator expansion. It's a good buy anyway because it has a lot of great Upgrade/Crew cards in it.

I was at my lgs today and won both my games with this list:

Countess Ryad — TIE Defender
Ruthlessness
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II
TIE/x7
Ship Total: 36
"Backdraft" — TIE/sf Fighter
Predator
Fire-Control System
Lightweight Frame
Special Ops Training
Ship Total: 34
Commander Alozen — TIE Advanced
Predator
Advanced Targeting Computer
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II
TIE/x1
Ship Total: 30

Ruthlessness really messed up a Tie swarm I was faced with on my first game. Second game was Rey/Dash and he was relying on crew to buff both ships. The threat of ruthlessness actually made him split up which helped me pick off each ship separately. My opponent conceded after I downed Rey and had Dash caught between Backdraft and Alozen.

Tbh Alozen didn't do much, I was chatting with our store champ after the matches and he suggested Omega Leader (apparently it's a common build called Cerberus?). I'll try that out next time around, but I really think the third ship is just whatever is fun.

Nice! I'm glad to hear it was effective. Just out of curiosity, why Predator on Backdraft? It seems a bit redundant with FCS. Also, did you hurt yourself with Ruthlessness at all? Did you have to change your flying much to avoid doing so?

Excellent! Even more reason to move that up the list of "things to buy that are more important than food"

I actually completely forgot about Predator. Oops.

I didn't have any trouble with it to be honest, in my first game against the Tie swarm my opponent refused to break up his 4 Tie block even as I pinged damage on them so I pretty much always had a Ruthlessness target that wasn't my own ships.

In my second game against Rey/Dash when split his ships I split up too, the one time it would have hurt one of my ships was the turn he conceded (Alozen was within range 1 of Dash, he would have been hit). I think if he flew a little more boldly he could have used it against me.
