Happy Friday and the lesson learned from Star Wars EP 4

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

Happy Friday to everyone and a good weekend, most of us in the states have a 3 day weekend which is outstanding. The last couple of days something has been rolling around in my head about being brave in my life, with it being the 40th Ann of a New Hope I was thinking about a story I heard a while ago. Lucas started to show footage of the movie to a select few people, everyone told him it was a bad idea and would be terrible, all but one person thought it was an awful idea, the wisdom of the day said the movie would never amount to anything. The single friend that encouraged him was Spielberg and the rest is history. It got me thinking, there are a lot of voices within our community that think our game is too broken, that only one faction can win, the JM5 must be nerfed into the ground, etc..... I think though like with Lucas and so many screaming EP 4 will never work, its time to be brave and fly something different with or without a Nerf. So on this 40th Ann of a small farm boy surpassing all odds to overcome, I think it might be time to let a T-65 shine in a store torny.

The question is for store torny season will you be brave? IDK maybe I am off my rocker, stupid, short sighted or a little of everything, but without the T-65 we really would never have had such a dream and a love for little plastic ships.

I'm getting a single opportunity for a store tourney, so no :P
Had the season been around March-April and I was in my university city where there are several options in that city and nearby, I'd be up for it.

Biggs counts....

I honestly can't remember the last time I flew with Biggs, and since I've managed no X-Wing over the past month, I'm going with the squad I'm familiar with: Ion Cannon Vessery, Backdraft with FCS, and Deathfire with Long Range Scanners/Homing Missiles/Cluster Mines.
None of those elements are the most super top tier, but they work well together, suit my playstyle, and have served me well.

I already flew an all T-65 list in a store championship this season. I took second. I am still ecstatic about it. :) I brought a couple of other builds with me that day—builds that might have given me a better shot at first place. My friend convinced me to play the X-Wings instead. I have thought about it all week, and I'm happier with taking second place with X-Wings than I would have been had I taken first with any other list I brought with me that day.

Well I won't be flying dirty Rebel ships ;) but I'm going to give this a whirl:

Black Squadron (100)

Darth Vader (35) - TIE Advanced
Veteran Instincts (1), TIE/x1 (0), Engine Upgrade (4), Advanced Targeting Computer (5)

Mauler Mithel (19) - TIE Fighter
Snap Shot (2)

Backstabber (16) - TIE Fighter

Dark Curse (16) - TIE Fighter

"Chaser" (14) - TIE Fighter

Have no clue how it'll work though.

Why not Wampa instead of Chaser? Was Chaser thematically there at the trench run? I knew Mithel and BStabber were

Wampa joined Black Squadron ABY and was stationed on the Executor. Chaser was killed at the Battle of Yavin by Wedge.

Edit: as link @MaxPower already provided!

It's no store championship, but I took Wedge, Luke and Biggs to one of my FLGS's for a 40th anniversary open play night yesterday. Won against a Vessery/Backdraft/QuickDraw and a Guri/Fenn/Palob attani list. And man was it fun to fly.

Expertise does wonders for Luke and Wedge. I'd consider taking the list to a store championship except that ordnance would be a killer matchup.

Can I be part of the cool group if I fly a T-70 in store champs?
I was already planning on bringing Snap Stress Nien Numb....lol

No. :P

I just ran the following and loved it. This takes some skill but can do amazing things.

X4 (100)

Rookie Pilot (26) - X-Wing
R2 Astromech (1), Seismic Torpedo (2), Vectored Thrusters (2)

You flew that thing? You're braver than I thought!

To be honest, you could flip the seismics and thrusters for a plasma for that Rookie. And that Rookie gets a Plasma! Everybody gets a plasma torpedo!

Happy Friday!

The week started off pretty bad. My work contract was to go until the end of June, but they gave me my 2 week notice on Monday. It seems the big boss had a friend he wanted to hire instead of me and I needed to go early to make room. I was pretty down in the dumps as I didn't have anything lined up yet. I was still trying to make things happen. Well, I busted my butt and worked with a lot of recruiting companies and got myself 3 interviews for today! The first one went well and before I even got into the 2nd one, they called with a job offer! I still did the 2nd interview and it was good, too. I might be getting an offer from them soon! The last one was cancelled as it wasn't anywhere as good as the first two. So....that's pretty nice to hear. It wasn't even a full 96 hours before I had an offer! I'll have a few weeks with no money, but at least it's only a couple.

I did get to play last night and practiced with Jbot for GenCon. He likes to build on the fly and did so, but made mistakes in his building. Etahn doesn't work with Accuracy Corrector. So, a lot of his list didn't work right. Then, his dice were less than average. Mine were above average. I beat him two games in a row. He wasn't too happy with the games and felt that it's getting a little complicated for him. He's having a hard time keeping it all straight. So...that was a little frustrating.

Also....only 3 of us showed up to play X-wing! We used to have like 15 tables going on. Lots of other game stores opened and I guess mine was the one to suffer the migration.

I did get to be a guest on the Scum and Villainy podcast last night, though! That was pretty cool. It was weird to listen to the same guys I've been listening to for over a year....talk...and have them talk back to me.

Our 3rd episode for our Narrative Star Wars Audio Story has released on our podcast feed, but hasn't been uploaded to YouTube yet. Only one more to go! I'm pretty surprised at how well it sounds.

I would love to be able to go to a Store Championship. I might actually do it! It all depends on family and such. I am torn between two lists.

Gamma Squadron Veteran (19)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Extra Munitions (2)
Homing Missiles (5)
Guidance Chips (0)

Gamma Squadron Veteran (19)

Long-Range Scanners (0)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Extra Munitions (2)
Homing Missiles (5)
Long-Range Scanners (0)

Total: 100

This list has some legs. I think it can really vaporize some lists that are out there right now. I haven't busted out the Tie Bombers in a while.

Or.....

"I have you now..."

Darth Vader (29)
Swarm Leader (3)
Advanced Targeting Computer (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)
TIE/x1 (0)

"Night Beast" (15)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Total: 100

I keep thinking of the Goblins from Mars song with this one. Academy and Night Beast form a bump formation that forces people to hit them and then bounce back to the very first one. They all take Evade tokens to feed Vader. Vader creeps up the side and gets 5 red dice with a Focus and decides to either re-roll with the TL or adds in an extra Crit. Night Beast is there for action economy as he does a green and gets a free Focus. If the dice rolls for the Tie Fighters are good, you can really whittle down an opponent, even Fenn Rau (not at R1).

Don't know if I'll make it to a store champ this season, but maybe I'll fly the T-65 in my next league games.

4x Red Squadron, R2-D6, Integrated, Crack Shot

Oh, love the idea... but R2-D6 is unique. Sad but true. That means take R3A2 on one, BB8 on another, R2D6 with crackshot on the third and um... something on the fourth!

Oh crud didn't see that in my rush to post something. Good catch!

Guess I'll just go with the idea already posted 4x Rookie, R2, integrated, plasma torps.

If you do run that let me know how it goes. Too many things to fly, too few opportunities.

I was thinking about Intensity, and I think I've found the first triple T-65 list that inspires me, I may run it at a tournament once wave XI hits:

Wedge Antilles (29)

BB-8 (2)

Plasma Torpedoes (3)

Integrated Astromech (0)

Intensity (2)

Garven Dreis (26)

M9-G8 (3)

Integrated Astromech (0)

Wes Janson (29)

Integrated Astromech (0)

R2-D2 (4)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Total: 99

I like this list (and am not really fond of Trench Run because of no Biggs, Garven looks good and can reload Intensity more often, and Wedge hits hard. If I need to give it a little extra theme, I'll likely replace Wes Janson with Luke.

Being dumb, Intensity would be useless on Luke.

I tried these two today but swapped the Homing Missiles for Proton Torps on the Gamma. I'd never used Long Range Scanners and never thought of using Veteran Instincts on the Gamma. I was pleasantly surprised by their performance so thanks for sharing. The other half of the list was Pure Sabacc with Crack Shot, Lightweight Frame, Adaptive Ailerons and a TIE Advanced Storm Squadron with Proton Rockets, TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector. Was up against Y-wings and X-wings.
