Introducing New Players to the Game

By KrisWall, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I'll be introducing three new players to the game tomorrow. I own two core sets, plus one of everything else that has been released so far.

My plan is to use the recommended starter decks for the Guardian, Rogues, Survivor and Mystic players from the core set and play either the first one or two scenarios from the core set.

Does this sound like a good idea?

I don't want to custom tailor decks and I feel like the core set scenarios are easy enough to work with.

That's what I would do. Plus I would play on easy mode as the story is the thing.

I'm definitely doing easy mode.

If you know the game well enough, I'd suggest you play one scenario from the Dunwich Legacy in easy mode. There's much more of a story than in the core set's introductory scenario, so that they might enjoy more the narrative, and be curious for what comes next

That depends on the tastes of KrisWall's group, doesn't it?

On the question, the starter decks are fine for introductory games. I definitely would try to play the first two scenarios.

The first is basically a tutorial, and is fine for that, but it doesn't really showcase what the game can do.

Running 1 and 2 together shows how the game connects scenarios, and Midnight Masks is still one of the strongest scenarios in terms of design and theming, in part due to its simplicity.

That's actually my plan. I have two core sets, so I built 4 of the starter decks and will let everyone pick. I then built the first two scenarios so that I won't have much prep work and gameplay can continue quickly. We'll see how they like it.

One thing that has consistently grabbed new players for me (if they win The Gathering) is explaining exactly how the set up for MM would be different. Showing them the "Your House" card if they burned it, etc.

That's a good point. The game is happening tonight. I'll report back on the outcome. They're all familiar with the LCG models and I think two of them played LotR LCG. I think this is going to be a slam dunk.

Be sure to make clear that the cards have a second use in the skill test icons up on the left.

I introduced a friend to the game on Wednesday and he loved it.

Smart as he is he grasped most of the rules in one go without ever having touched a lcg.

To only thing that took a few turns in the first scenario to land was the skill test modifiers on the cards.

I didn't make it clear enough that this ability on each card has nothing to do with playing it normally I think, so Don't make that mistake.

Good advice. Two of them have played Warhammer 40k Conquest, which has a similar icon that can be used to provide shields during an attack. I think they'll be ok.

Forgot to post. The intro game went great. Two people fully bought in. I now have more people to play with. :D

Congrats! :)
