FFG 40th Anniversary Wave 1 Tourney

By cubsfan4life, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I attended and played in FFG’s Star Wars 40th Anniversary ‘Wave 1 Only’ Tourney and must say I had a BLAST!! Thought about flying a TIE swarm, but figured there would be a ton of them, and this was my chance to fly one of my favorite characters – Wedge! So went with this 99 pt Rebel list-

Wedge Antilles — X-Wing Swarm Tactics Proton Torpedoes R2-D2

Garven Dreis — X-Wing R2 Astromech

"Dutch" Vander — Y-Wing Ion Cannon Turret Proton Torpedoes R2 Astromech

Lots of TIE fighter swarms- was funny to see some tables with 14 TIEs in a big cluster!

Apologize I do not remember names, but had a great time playing with each opponent!

First game I played a very experienced player flying Vader, another Advanced & 3 TIEs. I took a bad angle early & put the y-wing in harms way - it went down fast to multiple missle shots –xwings held their own & I managed to take out 2 of them & had the other 3 down to 1-2 pts damage each before I lost.

Next game was against Imperials again, Vader, Marek, & 3 TIEs. He came straight in from his left and I came at an angle from my left-center. My combo worked out perfectly, with extremely hot dice! Dutch TLd Vader, passed another TL to Wedge. Garven focused, Wedge Swarm tactic’d him to PS 9 for first shot & one shot a TIE. Wedge & Dutch Torp'd Vader into oblivion. Next turn Wedge one shot another TIE, Dutch ionized another & Garven finished it off. Marek put up a fight and took out shields on Garven, but got pinched and knocked out by a hot Wedge.

Game 3 was vs. almost an identical list, with Vader setting up in the center and the swarm to his right. All asteroids ended up closer to his side, I lined up to right of my center, and tried to race to asteroids ASAP – which worked- his academy TIES out front unfortunately BOTH clipped rocks, and both dice and direct hits were very cruel- this whole match I could not believe how awful dice were for him & hot they stayed for me – Dutch Torp'd Vader, Wedge torp'd Howlrunner, and hot R1 shots made quick work of the rest. I think I lost 1 shield total… dice were just not even fair!

Last game I was very excited to fly against another rebel! Flew against 2 ywings w ion, Garven & a rookie xwing. We both setup in our respective far left corner, with a cluster of rocks in the center. He slow rolled straight in before making the turn, while I immediately took the angle – was a grand meeting in the middle of the asteroid field, where I got very bold going 3 v 4. I should have split up & flanked, but at this point it was late at night so was more fun to have a full joust in the center of the board :) Dutch & Wedge torp’d the rookie X, and he came out of it alive! Garven pinged a few shields from a Ywing, and from there the dice failed me. Wedge went down immediately to a four attack barrage. Next turn Garvens bumped, while his Y’s were able to ionize both my ships. His Garven finished mine off the next turn, while Dutch & his Y traded ions… unfortunately Dutch was doomed to the edge of the board now looming in front of him, where he ended up a few turns later…

Really was a ton of fun with the wave 1 meta, everyone had to actually fly their ships and not just rely on turrets/ scum tricks etc. My combo idea played out perfectly, for two games at least - Dutch handed out TLs, Garven passed off his focus after being swarmed up to a 9 by Wedge - and Wedge's ability is nasty - if only his T-65 could get a boost and/or another modification!!

Got a special 40th anniversary card so that was kinda neat. Really nice group of players, everyone really friendly! Hope to do more of these types of special tourneys in the future.
