GenCon X-wing Narrative Event! Unique Event!

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

For those attending the event at Gencon: what faction are you planning to bring and what team (Impreial or Rebel) do you want to play on? I'm trying to get a feel for how many squadrons of each of the three factions will be at grayskull

I am planning on attending depending on if I miss the cut at NA championships. I have my ticket just in case and I am planning on bringing a Rebel and Imperial squad. I thought about doing Scum but I just think to much of their roster will be above the power curve for the event(Attanni, Jumpmasters, Protectorate). I honestly don't care which side I play because I know I will have a great time either way.

My buddy and I are going to bring Rebel, Scum and Imperial, Scum.

Rebel first choice. Imperial second choice.

Just Imps. Sorry to be inflexible. Fly what ypu love, right?

Great! I'm not sure whether to wish you good luck or not in the Nationals ;)

Looks like a good amount of people are bringing two rosters, which is good news for me. One thing I definitely don't want to happen is us having too many Imperial or Rebel rosters. I would really hate to have to stick an Imperial or Rebel roster on the wrong team. Bringing two rosters really helps us in that regard, as does bringing a scum roster, which is compatible with both teams.

I don't know whether I even want to make the cut. I am really looking forward to this event. Should Selflessness be included in the unique cards that don't have to be drafted? Oh and I'm glad to see the Jumps and Attanni added to the banned list.

Yeah selflessness will be going in the non-draft unique category (you can have one copy in your roster, no draft required)

As an Imperial player, can I draft Rebel and Scum pilots and put them in the brig?

Sort of, actually...

you could draft characters that show up in both factions, such as boba fett or Kath Scarlett, and then just not field them.

Not it sure that it's worth it, though!

There are certainly some strategies to be played on drafting. I was considering Sabine (Intensity/TIE Fighter is a lot of fun with her) but realized that somebody out there is likely good with bombs and as a Rebel player I would be hurting the team with my draft.

Scum, on the other hand, you could end up against your own faction so being greedy in the draft actually has value. If you draft Fenn Rau, it prevents somebody who might fly against your team from getting him.

Thematically as a scum squadron commander you should probably not care about anyone else, even people on your team! If it makes you stronger, then it's good. by addition or by subtractiion - doesn't matter

Now that I have a reason to not make the cut, maybe I will???

I can't decide between Rebel or Imperials. I have not even looked at the scenarios. Tried to get a feel from podcast and end up more confused.

In the draft league I ran last year, pilots were drafted to prevent others even though they were never played. Little different here.... But I can see that happening.

Llittle less of that here, since all Imperial or all Rebel players get a prize if their side wins. It's not a bad call to leave something good behind if you're not good with it. Scum totally fits your description though.

The Imperials and Rebels each have a few missions where they're playing very much in-character (Imperials terrorize civilians, Rebels try to rescue a comrade), so if you like a faction thematically, i'd go with that one.

you might also treat this event as a chance to run ships that you like, but wouldn't be viable in the competitive meta game. There's no established metagame for any of these scenarios or this event in general, so there is a good amount of room for some creativity here. If you come ready with an offbeat squadron that you've developed specifically for the event, you might do quite well.

Bringing imp and rebel lists

prefer rebels but not by much.

This is a general request to help play test the 4 player missions in this mission packet. We like to do rigorous play testing, but summer vacations, the need for 4 players, and trying to finish Mario Kart means that some of us won't get to play it as much as we wish. We want to to make this a decent event and want to ask people to try to break the 4 player missions.

Mission Pack

Remember to use the Ban list and try to avoid named people. We only use one or two uniques for play test games.

I'll see if I can get 2 more players. Lack of warm bodies is why I never did them. . .

@Babaganoosh and @heychadwick, what should we have filled out for the roster sheets? Is the Squad List mission-by-mission? I'm trying to figure out what paperwork you would like filled out in advance to establish our pre-draft 250 point rosters.

Also, I like to run my lists off of squad builder printouts. Is that taboo? I mean, I'll bring the cards to prove I own them, but for actual play, I'm kinda used to computer printouts. . .

In terms of what you need at the start of the event, we will need pre-draft squadron Rosters, and draft sheets filled out. When we have everyone's squadron rosters checked out and teams assigned, we'll run the draft and you'll update the roster for any cards you draft.

As far as the squad printouts go, I think that's largely up to your opponent, but you should be ready to put the cards on the table if the other guy feels uncomfortable running off the sheet.

Also, it might get messy once you start adding drafted cards, etc.

As I'm getting more serious about roster building, I'm coming up with questions and comments:

  • Assuming Guns for Hire is released, is it playable? Have y'all made the final call on that? If not, what's your cut-off date?
  • I'm guessing currently unreleased stuff won't be available, but if so, how should upgrades for, e.g., a Vaksai be priced in the roster?
  • Assuming negative point-cost cards are 0 (in rosters only, I assume) is an implication that they are not fixes for their respective ships. It will have the effect of discouraging, e.g., A-wings. Wouldn't it be better to simply say that any negative-point cost card has to be assigned to a given ship in the same way that an EPT is assigned to a given pilot?
  • This seems like the way to go for the Vaksai (or, even if it's not going to be available, the TIE Advanced is in the same position); namely, allow the discount in roster cost, but lock the upgrade to the ship. Paying 26 points for a PS 2 TIE Advanced with AdvTC seems ... like a lot.
  • Note that getting an Aggressor (IG-2000) means taking a Firespray or a JM5K ... and JM5Ks are banned. (See pages 4 and 6.)
  • On that subject, assuming the leaked FAQ is real (and released before GenCon), will it be in play? Again, are you locked in, and if not, when will you make the final call?

Hi!

Anything released in Guns for hire will not be legal for the event. At this point there's really not enough time to vet anything properly before go-time.

The rule regarding negative point upgrades for the roster is mainly to prevent anyone from squeezing more points into the roster by dropping their total points through the addition of negative point cards. I wouldn't want to lock titles to ships because there are a lot of titles that you might want to swap in/out depending on the mission. I don't want to screw around with this rule too much so close to the event, but I also don't like the way it penalizes TIE advanceds. I'll be open to changing this rule significantly after the event, and I'm looking for an elegant solution. I might do something along the lines of upgrade locking, like you suggest.

I'll update that draft rule for the IG2000; I forgot that the JM5K was on that list. I'll swap it for something that is still legal.

The FAQ's legality will depend a lot on if/when it drops, and what is really in it. A lot of the rumored changes are irrelevant to us due to the current ban list. I will say that anything that drops while we are less than a week away will not be in effect during the event.

As mentioned above, I'm getting prepared (and psyched) for the event. In that vein, I'm compiling a list of what we need. (I know I've seen stuff mentioned in various posts, but I'm trying to centralize everything; EDIT: Page 11 Event Rules Packet)). Here's what I've got:

  • Movement Templates
  • Range Rulers
  • Asteroids (6) and Debris (6)
  • Dice
  • Tokens (including +6 Evade and +6 TL)
  • Damage Deck
  • Pilot Cards
  • Upgrade Cards
  • Roster Lists
  • Draft Lists
  • Event Rules Packet
  • Event Mission Packet
  • Ship Models and Bases (including unique ships)

Note what's conspicuously absent: ship models for standard ships. Is that correct, or do we need to bring them?

Anything I'm missing?

As an aside, to whomever ends up on my team: I'm sorry. I'm building my rosters very thematically, and not going for any real "power drafts" or anything. Depending on how prevalent that is, I may not win very much!

Oh, and another rules question! During drafting, can we pass on a pick we would otherwise get? For example, say I have two B-wings, and I want either Nera or Keyan, in that order, but not both. If I get Nera, can I somehow pass on Keyan if he also falls to me?

I'm thinking real hard about trying to hit this event if I don't make day 2 in the NA Champs. Is there a place to get the info on the rules and missions without doing the official sign-up?
