Have you ever wanted to play X-wing that had a story to it? Did you ever want the death of a named pilot to mean more than just giving up his points? Does the idea building a list from a specific hanger of possible ships for specific missions sound like a strategic challenge for you? Wanted to play more than just 100 points around 6 obstacles?
The Shuttle Tydirium Podcast is going to run a Narrative Event at GenCon 2017! It will have 40 slots and split everyone into either the Rebels or the Imperials. Scum will balance out either faction. This will be on the Saturday after the cut for final tables. So, if you play in the big event, but don’t make the cut, you can try for another chance of fame and prizes!
One of the most interesting aspects of our event is that all uniques are…..unique! There will only be one of every named pilot, crew, or other upgrade in the game. We will have a draft system set up to determine who gets each unique card. If that unique pilot/upgrade gets shot down, THEY ARE DEAD FOR THE REST OF THE EVENT! This makes it interesting that you can lose the match, but take down their prize pilot. Also, if a generic lives through 2 missions, he can be upgrade to a named pilot! Just…not one already claimed by someone else (or dead).
The event will be four rounds of unique and rigorously play tested missions. There will be two missions per round and you don’t know which mission you will get ahead of time. Victory points you win will go towards your team to help decide who wins the overall event, so even if you are in last place, it’s worth it to stick around to try to help the team. Victory points also go towards your overall standing at the event and to win a bevy of prizes on hand! Want to know what the missions are like ahead of time?
There is another layer of strategy involved with the game. You get a “hanger” of 250 pts of various upgrades, but no named options. This hanger will be your pool of resources that you can build your lists from for each mission. It includes all EPT’s and pilots. For example, you can take a Tie Defender and then both the X7 and /D title for it in the hanger. Pick during the mission which one you want. So, you might want two different System cards to put on your Tie Advanced depending on the mission. Find out which mission you get for the round and then build your list based on what’s in your hanger!
There will be a banned list due to balance and theme. All A-list plot characters won’t be allowed (Vader, Luke, Han, C-3PO, R2-D2, Leia, Soontir Fel, and the Emperor) as these guys won’t be fighting in this backward war. Why would the Emperor be guarding an ammo depot? This also stretches to the Royal Guard title as it’s their duty to guard the Emperor (who isn’t at the depot). Also, anything from the Force Awakens timeline will also be banned on theme, which includes droids. There are a few items banned due to game balance. They are TLT’s, Seismic Torpedoes, Tie Phantoms, Captured Tie Modification, and Biggs. They just ruin the balance of any of these missions.
Full event rules can be found here
We have gotten so excited for this event, that we have even started an audio drama that tells the background for the event. Even if you don’t want to go to the event, the audio drama is a fun little Star Wars story you might enjoy.
If this sounds interesting, but you can’t make it to GenCon, we are going to try to run a Global Campaign where you can run it in your local area and report back! Get your local TO to make it a one day event, or just play with a couple of friends in your kitchen! We will tally all results and let people know who wins!
OH, GenCon did mess up on the current event catalog! It's one day long event. Not 2 events. They will fix it soon, I hope.
