Proxy army. Your thoughts and feelings?

By TylerTT, in Runewars Miniatures Game

So I'm considering proxying an army of ratmen using my myth miniatures. As they fit perfectly in the RuneWars trays and I like them more than undead. (The undead models are fine I just really like ratmen.)

how do you fourmites feel about playing against proxy armies?

totally rad! I wouldn't care at all.

I've made some proxies myself, my Daqan lost to the goblin king and his horde on Sunday.

So I'd be fine with it.

wouldn't bother me any

As long as I don't have to think to hard to figure out which units are which, I don't have a problem with it.

I'm probably the odd-man-out, but I wouldn't be too interested in playing against a proxy army like that. But then, I think I'm here for theme first and mechanics second.

As long as you were using actual units and upgrades mechanically and not using your own stuff, then I don't mind too much. That said, I'd rather play against someone who has the actual stuff since it's easier visually and more thematic for me. I've never been much into warhammer so that stuff holds less thematic appeal for me.

Play what you like. One can only hope you're opponent can tell what they are. (bowmen/cav/swordsmen)

I would say if you are using the upgrade units like the bannermen or drummers you need to be clear who those units are. Best to use the original models for them. As for the rank and file.... not sure it matters so much.

At least your Myth stuff's getting used, right? :D

Yeah my plan is to use all the rules and components of the undead army. The big dials should make it pretty clear as to what's what.

I love the figures/models for Myth, but that gameplay was a disaster - even after the 2nd edition rules. I've probably purchased 500 bucks worth of Myth stuff just to enjoy collecting and painting them. I'd love to reuse them for something like proxy play. Great idea.

Until this community is a hell of a lot bigger I'm not going to be picky at all about what people want to put on the table.

If a local scene that has people using models that they already own as proxy for actual units (as opposed to custom rules for those models) means that I have more people to play with then I'm all for it.

I have yet to dig Into the 2.0 stuff but hoo boy 1.0 was rough waters. Can not wait to give it another shot though.

I'm in this boat, I don't like playing against heavily proxied armies...a unit or upgrade is fine to test out a list prior to buying but more that that and I'm out...

No.

If they fit fine on the trays then no problem with me I guess. It might be annyoing when we come to army upgrade characters and such. If you going so far as to proxy you might as well write up rules for the army as a whole. At that point only casual people (no ofense) will probably wanna play though.

Writing up new rules though turns into a balance thing. After years of reading homebrewed cards for X-Wing, I've come to the conclusion that most people are horrible at coming up with balanced ideas.

I have no problem at all if I can identify perfectly upgrades (champion, musician...), monsters, heroes, this is a game I love to play. If you like more rats than undead is fine to me. I would like to see it in the table.

Local scene in my city will allow proxies of cards and miniatures.

That is very true, I have read some hilarious broken and weird backwards rule sheets for homebrew warhammer armies as well as some homemade pilot cards for x-wing. I'm just saying that if you are gonna proxy you might just go all the way and make it your own.

If you show up with your proxy army that is just proxying models, you can give me the 30 second run down "The ratmen with melee weapons are Reanimates, the ones with bows are Reanimate Archers, the one with the cool armor and huge axe is Ardus, the ratman that looks like a wizard represents a Deathcaller, and the one with the banner is my herald figure upgrade" and then we can start playing. If I forget which unit is which I can always glance at your dial. I know what to expect from your units and the game plays just like it would if you had used the Runewars minis.

On the other hand, your custom ratman army is going to take a lot longer for me to review and get an understanding of what it does. I'll need to spend more play time referencing what your stuff does and maybe arguing with you about how the poorly worded ability you wrote actually interacts with the rules. It's a totally different experience. If you're my buddy and we're playing at home that could be a fun way to spend an evening. If you're one of a handful of guys that shows up at a game store on a designated night, that's not the experience I'm looking for. I want to get in a couple of games that setup quickly and play with a minimum of fuss.

You should have seen what passes as a proxy at last years 9th age European Team tournament. I believe a can of cat food was used...

Woah woah, was the OP asking to proxy in a tourney? Cause the answer can only be No.

proxies are for your kitchen table only. Maybe a casual game at a store, but never in a tournament.

Incorrect.

I'm TOing a tournament this weekend and we've specifically *TOLD* players that given the early phase the game and difficulty of fielding 200 pt forces that proxy figures are welcome *as long as they communicate and mark the proxies * so people fairly know what is what.

6 months from now, it'll be a different situation but given expansion boxes are just starting to show up, you really have to be fair to players coming out for their first organized play experience.

Or you just organize 100-point tournaments until more expansions are available.
