Remove stress from multiple ships with Inspiring Recruit + Cassian?

By Joe Censored, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Does Cassian Andor U-Wing pilot's ability with Inspiring Recruit allow Cassian to remove stress from more than one ship? And can the 2nd stress token be removed from Cassian? Let me explain.

Cassian: "At the start of the Activation phase, you may remove 1 stress token from 1 other friendly ship at Range 1-2. " (emphasis mine)

Inspiring Recruit: "Once per round, when a friendly ship at Range 1-2 removes a stress token, it may remove 1 additional stress token. "

Now notice it says "you may remove 1 stress..." which should mean that it is the Cassian U-Wing which is the ship actually removing stress, not the other friendly ship having it removed from. That then triggers Inspiring Recruit, which should mean Cassian gets to remove another stress token. In addition Inspiring Recruit doesn't specify which ship Cassian can now remove this 2nd stress token from.

So does that mean Cassian first removes stress from another friendly, then can remove stress with Inspiring Recruit from himself or still an additional friendly within 1-2 (not necessarily who the first stress was removed from)?

I sent in a rules question about this a while ago, but haven't received a response yet.

The general interpretation is that Inspiring Recruit will remove the second stress from the same ship as the first stress, but to my knowledge there is no official confirmation from FFG, either in email or the FAQ, as to whether the second stress must be removed from the same ship, the remover's ship, or any eligible ship given the ability.

I think it's an easy interpretation.

With the recruit, you can remove an aditional stress token. Ok, let's see how would Cassian's text be so he does that (just add 1 additional stress to the text):

Cassian: "At the start of the Activation phase, you may remove 2 stress token from 1 other friendly ship at Range 1-2. "

I don't think it is really that easy Willy, but without official clarification I suppose that will have to do.

Willy has it right. You don't resolve the ability again – you remove an additional stress. Where you remove a stress token, remove one more. There is no option in there to change targets. Cassian + Recruit removes 2 stress from a target.

At start of Activation, Cassian removes 1 stress token from a ship. If you choose to invoke Inspiring Recruit at this time, you may remove 2 tokens from that ship, because as InquisutorM notes, you do it at the same time you remove the first stress.

The second option is that Cassian can remove a stress from one ship at the start of Activation and then when a ship performs a green maneuver during Activation to remove a stress, it can remove 2 if it is double stressed from Inspiring Recruit.

This all assumes that ships are in Range 1-2.

This one is really a bit muddled. An interpretation that may be valid is that you remove 2 stress from a single ship but I'm not positive that that is correct. Another interpretation I think would be that recruits would allow cassian to remove 1 from another ship and 1 from himself if he has one. A third interpretation is this is dumb, don't fly u wings they make everything terrible.

I reckon this is just another example of poorly worded cards... like the Aggressor title ;) (lets not go there)

Anyone who is trying to find a grammatical loophole here (knowing the true intention of the card) should probably become a lawyer :D
