Note-Keeping

By GiledPallaeon, in Star Wars: Armada

For those that maintain copies of their fleet builds somewhere (Warlords, a bunch of saved PDFs, scribbles in a notebook for the old-fashioned), how do you organize your fleets? Are the names straight descriptive (e.g. "2x ISD 2xGoz Defenders"), have something of a thematic flourish (e.g. " Scharnhorst and Gneisenau" , "Motti-zuma's Revenge" (not my title)), or use some other code? Do you note certain frequent inclusions in the title, or do you take them for granted? (I.e. you always have OE/APT/XI7 on a Torpedo Frigate for Admonition , so Admo means all that to you in a fleet name.) How do you note different versions of the same core fleet build? Do you note the date, the number, some other characteristic? Do you not care about any coding in your fleet database, and just maintain a collation that only you can interpret?

For myself, I use a couple different conventions. The basic fleet title includes a nod to the commander, the basic ship composition, and usually something about the fleet's style. Example "Ackbar Double H1MC80" is a dual Home One list with Ackbar, with some flotillas and X-wings bringing up the rear. If there's a thematic component/point to the build, that usually dominates the name. " Scharnhorst and Gneisenau" the dual Liberty list is the obvious one for me, but other lists in my files include "Zaarin's Shenanigans" (built to throw Advanced and Phantoms all over the field), Galactic Voyager , based on Ackbar's squadron in Darksaber , and the new Motti's Dreadnoughts. When I iterate a fleet, the original gets the subtag Mk 1, and the convention for follow ons is thus: change in ship type (I-1 to I-2, Arquitens to Gladiator ) or play style earn the moniker Mk 2/3/4/..... . If it's just an upgrade card change, it keeps the Mark of the original, but adds a letter. So Example Fleet Mk 3 becomes Example Fleet Mk 3A, Mk 4B becomes 4C.

How do you do it?

Until Warlords has a subtitle feature I'm forced to include tags in the list names to know what the list is comprised of.

The convention I use is something like:

Name // ship - ship - ship / [ace][ace] - Generic Fighter, Generic Fighter.

So it would be something like:

flying monkeys // VSD - VSD - QF / [Howl][Mithel] - TIE/LN - TIE/IN

I don't play Rebs

IGAF2 Mk02 s2

would be ISD+GSD+Arq+2xFlotilla version 2 with 2 squadrons. If I change ships and upgrades then it gets Mk+. If I change number of squadrons then it stays same Mk but different s. If I change squadrons but keep the same number OR have a slight mod to ships or commanders then it becomes Mk02.1.

I=ISD

N=Interdictor

V= VSD

G= GSD

A=Arquitennes

R=Raider

F=Gozantis

and I suppose Q=Quasar

if it's a carrier (two or more squadron buffs) then I'll usually put a small 'c' behind the ship (e.g. Ic2F Mk04 s12 for 2x carrier ISD and a Gozanti with 12 squadrons). I don't think I'll need a 'c' in Quasars lol.

I generally name my fleet with a nod to the design concept. For example

In Vettes Dead- A corvette swarm fleet where I filled all the upgrade slotes

The Quick Are the Dead- Imperial speed control shenanigans

Sato Two- The Shrimpening- second attempt at a sato/shrimp list

Really if I cant make a bad pun out of the title I dont bother.

Most of my lists are somewhat descriptive, like Black Dice or Area Control. My Corellian Conflict lists are also pretty straightforward (CC2 Bombers, CC2 Interdictor). It's easier to keep track that way.

My last Imperial fleet was named the Scariff Remorial Fleet in honour of the two ISD's destroyed above the base on Scariff.

Lol...

If they are named along the lines of "Wednesday", "tonight" or "GameStop" then they are semi competitive

if they are named "CC....." They are for cc

if they are named "0" to "500" they are outdated

"500" to "1000" they are new fleets that I may or may not fly/have flown

If they have a "copy" in their name they are reworked lists

if a fleet is starred ✨they worked well

And if a fleet has personalised notes and win/loss statistics they are my favourite lists

I use the same single letter naming system as the other poster but Z for gozanti.

My writing style I think shows exactly the strengths of the list in standard quantity issues:

GAAZZ moffyJ demo s6 b12

5 activations

bid for first

6 squadrons for modest fighter coverage

admiral plan

and anything big relevant other info demo Jonius etc

I don't keep records of lists, I just work them up as needed from previous expirence. Lighten your life, stop keeping stuff for the sake of it. What's more fun, thinking about and redesigning a list every time you need it or shuffling through a load of old paper.

Free yourselves.

List titles are more thematic than descriptive for me, though I do aim to keep them related to the list concept in some way.

As to how many to keep, I regularly delete older lists, though I do tend to keep all of the ones I've taken to tournaments.

I too delete older lists, unless I've actually flown them and enjoyed them (or have plans to do so). Even then, if I fly a newer version and like it I'll delete the older one (outdated and thus useless) - unless it performed better (so hard to judge!)

As for naming my fleets, I seldom really have a convention. Before I deleted them, I had fleets for each admiral 'Ackbar Fleet 1', 'Ackbar Fleet 2' for example. Now I have them more for theme 'Yavaris Bombers 1', Motti's Intel Officer Fleet', or alliteration based on name and intent 'Mon Mothma's Monsters'. If it's CC then my format is CC - Vader - 400 Points', or 'CC Campaign - Vader - 400 Points' or even 'CC Fleet 1'. . . glad you brought this topic up actually, I have to once more go through and edit my fleets. . . renaming I think. . . probably to 'CC Current', 'CC Planned', 'CC Unlikely, but Cool'. :)

Also if it's a fleet I'm not quite happy with, I'll call it a test 'CC Campaign Yavaris Bombers Test 500 Points', and if it contains ships I don't have, it's 'Experimental'

Edit: Dang I really don't have a convention. . . I just found a fleet called 'Testing. . . .' and one called 'Vader ISD 2GSD 12TIE/F' in an attempt to follow the format Blail had posted a while back. . . Then I have potential version of current CC fleets ‘CC Fleet 3 - Vader - Potential 500’, 'Test with Ackar SDs'. 'Test Fleet' and 'Test Fleet 2'. . . sheesh, I'm going to edit/delete/change a bunch of these now. . . once again, thanks for posting this topic!
