Tips before jumping into Vassal?

By drail14me, in X-Wing Organized Play

I've installed Vassal and been familiarizing with the controls and watching other players. Any Vassal tips before I try my first game?

Stop dallying around and play some games! The best way to become comfortable with it is to just play with it. I memorized all the basic maneuvers, but just right click for all the special things. All of the maneuvers pretty simple to memorize... straight is just shift + speed of maneuver. Left bank is control (which is the left most of the modifying keys) + speed... Right bank is alt (right most modifier) + speed. Turns add the shift key to the bank maneuver, and a K turn is both ctrl + alt because its like both turns at once (or something like that).

I prefer to drag tokens around instead of using the built in actions as its less things to learn from a key stroke point of view. Otherwise it's all pretty simple and intuitive, especially now that everything is streamlined.

I agree. I was hesitant too but just dived right in. Tell your opponent you are brand new. Everyone I played so far was very cool.

And each version it just keeps getting better.

Here's a handy pair of reference sheets with most of the relevant hotkeys on them. It's rough, but effective if you want to print them out and have them next to you for the first 10 games or so.

Just make it clear that you are a new player for the first 5 or so games - you'll be playing slow and many people won't expect that, but will be happy to oblige if they know before the match starts.
