What to buy

By Vadersironfist, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I have the 2 core sets, the imperial veterans expansion pack, and the B and A wing expansion packs. What should i get next? I was looking into getting a tie phantom and z-95 headhunter. I would be grateful for any opinion

I would also like to know any squads you think would work for me

Based on what you have already, I'd say you should buy a standalone TIE Defender and later a TIE Bomber pack to supplement your Imp Vets expansion. For the rebel side, Rebel Aces also have an A and a B-wing, with a lot of good upgrades.

If you're looking for something new, the TIE Phantom is w lot of fun to fly right, so are TIE Interceptors. Inquisitor's TIE is also pretty good.

On the other side, K-Wing is loads of fun, and so is the ARC-170.

Over time, as you build up your collection, there isn't really a bad purchase since almost all packs come with upgrade cards that are useful for other ships.

For the most competitive options given what you have available I would agree with the Tie Defender. That would give you the ability to run Vess, Ryad and Deathfire: a favorite of mine. I would tell you if you can find one, the K-wing is one of the best purchases, based on what you can do with that ship and the upgrades it comes with (Extra Munitions). Heroes of the Resistance gives you some fun options on the rebel side of things.

Another "in the box" expansions that you don't require additional upgrades to make competitive is the Tie FO for Omega Leader

For listbuilding, what core sets do you have? One blue, one red, or two of the same?

I'd recommend the Y-wing, but... it's in short supply at the moment. ARCs are a really good one too. I love Z's but I find myself not using them all that much now-a-days. They lack punch & re-positioning. Having said that, if you get an ARC, you get 2 copies of Vectored Thrusters, so that makes them, x-wings & y-wings get Barrel Roll actions, so there are some ways to make them stronger in that regard.

For Imps, I'd suggest a TIE Advanced Prototype, the TIE Striker, and/or the TIE/sf. the TIE/sf can be a beast if you build it right.

And I always recommend buying ships in pairs, but that's between you and your wallet.

Are you planning on playing with friends or in store competitions? If friends (and they're not planning on playing tournament-caliber lists), buy whatever ships most float your boat -- the Phantom and Headhunter if that's what's coolest for you. You can always proxy whatever upgrade cards you don't own but would like to use (you can use a squad builder printout for ease of reference). My own inclination would be to buy other packs that contain the same ships (Rebel Aces, the standalone ship packs for the others) to get all the pilots, but that's just me. I also tend to use a squad builder to come up with lists I'd like to fly, then buy the packs to assemble them.

Here's a kind of random list using the pilots and ships you have or were thinking of getting and unlimited upgrade cards (I don't recommend taking this to a tournament, but the individual ship builds are solid):

Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Juke (2)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Snap Shot (2)
Autothrusters (2)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Fire-Control System (2)

Luke Skywalker (28)
Expertise (4)
R2-D2 (4)
Vectored Thrusters (2)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Total: 99

Each ship will have to be flown in a unique way to be effective. Could be interesting.

I have one of each

I'm with Hydra above. Unless you're into tournament play, just get a ship you like. After I got the first two core sets, I got another T-65 and a pair of Ties. I just enjoyed running the x-wing against the ties. Keep it simple until you're comfortable with the basics of the game. I made that mistake and picked up too many ships before I understood all the basics of the game and the ships I already had.

I was in the same position just a month or so ago...got the bug watching some games at Celebration and now it's grown into a full-blown addiction. The goal, I think, is to ultimately own at least one copy of ALL the ships. But for list building purposes and general all around fun, we've started with buying the ships that we think are the most fun/cool/iconic and then building from there. It seems to really be all about getting what you want to play first and going from there. :)

One other buying tip: take a look at the FFG website for any ships you think you might want. If they are listed as "Out of Stock" then you may want to grab it if you see one on the shelf. Reprints can take a while and prices go up.

Thanks guys i eventually hope to own one of each set but will take it slow thanks for the advice
