Epic Play - 'Rebels' & Scum Themed List

By Guy Wearing Black, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Some friends and I plan to run our first drunken Epic Game with a huge ship, the Gozanti. With that Rebels inspired ship, we’re going to run a traditional Galactic Civil War themed game. The three of us will have some fun and by splitting the Rebel Opposition into a Scum and Rebellion alliance. The Ghost will fly alongside the Shadow Caster and Skull Squadron. So I’ll be taking about 150-ish of the Scum and Villainy side, which will have Ketsu flying her ship, with the title (and most likely VI for that precious Dual Tractor Beam). And then Fenn Rau will fly with some Concord Dawn allies (named or not, I’m flexable). I’ve done the math, and I figure I can get Ketsu and Fenn with two friendly Protectorate Starfighters. I can try four, but that can cut into the rebel’s budget—which can happen but not by too much if need be.

Ketsu Onyo 53 (38 /15)

  • Veteran Instincts (1)
  • Engine Upgrade (4)
  • K4 Security Droid (3)
  • · Shadow Caste r (3)
  • Glitterstim (1)
  • Glitterstim (1)

Fenn Rau 36 (28/8)

  • Expertise (4)
  • Stealth Device (3)
  • Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Old Teroch 30 (26/4)

  • Fearlessness (1)
  • Autothrusters (2)
  • Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Kad Souls 30 (25/5)

  • Stay on Target (2)
  • Autothrusters (2)
  • Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Total: 149/150

This list makes me sad. I don’t even like it much myself. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable running something this heavy with very little ships. I’d like to try and work a fourth ship in—by maybe pushing my budget by five or six points if plausible. Really, I filled this out going “****, I may never use this.” And, I don’t feel very confident with expertise now that my Imperial friend is discovering all the wonderful stress giving pilots and upgrades the game has to offer. So, advice on dealing with this 150 to 160 grey area? My limitations (everyone’s favorite) I’m keeping Ketsu with VI and the Title while Fenn must just be there. The other pilots they fly with is what I’m flexible on (they just must be Protectorate Starfighters) but Crew upgrades I'd rather restrain from unique Scum names that would rather collect on them in than work aside them. Really, I’d like to polish this 150 list to something fairly budgeted, but, I could use some help squeezing that fourth ship in.

Your list is going to get flattened by any kind of swarm, mainly because autothrusters don't work so good against more than 3 ships. This is about as good as it gets with 4 Protectorates and Ketsu:

Fenn Rau (32)
Protectorate Starfighter (28), Attanni Mindlink (1), Concord Dawn Protector (1), Autothrusters (2)

Ketsu Onyo (40)
Lancer-class Pursuit Craft (38), Attanni Mindlink (1), 4-LOM (1)

Concord Dawn Veteran (26) x 3
Protectorate Starfighter (22), Attanni Mindlink (1), Concord Dawn Protector (1), Autothrusters (2)

Even then, a single stress dealer can mess with you, and it's actually a fairly weak swarm in comparison to TIEs. I'd advise the following for a better win chance:

Fenn Rau (34)
Protectorate Starfighter (28), Push the Limit (3), Concord Dawn Protector (1), Autothrusters (2)

Ketsu Onyo (50)
Lancer-class Pursuit Craft (38), Veteran Instincts (1), Dengar (3), Scavenger Crane (2), Shadow Caster (3), Counter-Measures (3)

Black Sun Soldier (20) x 2
Z-95 Headhunter (13), Homing Missiles (5), Scavenger Crane (2), Guidance Chips (0)

Torkhil Mux (26)
HWK-290 (19), Twin Laser Turret (6), Intelligence Agent (1)

Both are 150 points, and the second one has a massive increase in damage potential.

Okay. I get it. It's not a very effective combination with Fenn and Ketsu with such a lighter escort. So, how about some heavier assistance.

C-ROC Cruiser 62 (35/27)

  • Ordinance Tubes (5)
  • Targeting Coordinator (4)
  • · Azmorigan (1)
  • Weapons Engineer (3)
  • · Merchant One (2)
  • Ordinance Experts (5)
  • Backup Shield Generator (3)
  • Assault Missiles (5)

Fenn Rau 38 (2810)

  • Push The Limit (3)
  • Proton Torpedoes (4)
  • Autothrusters (2)
  • Concord Dawn Protector (1)

Ketsu Onyo 50 (38 /12)

  • Veteran Instincts (1)
  • Engine Upgrade (4)
  • · Cikatro Vizago (3)
  • · Shadow Caste r (3)
  • Glitterstim (2)
  • Glitterstim (2)

Not great, but better than the last. It lacks polish. But you all see the concept. These ships get better cover when Merchant One salvos a TIE swarm with Assault Missie round after round. Is it ideal for the Gozanti? Probably not. But I like these odds better than before. I'd also like to trim this list down a bit too. The C-ROC is a little heavy an--I imagine--it could go lighter. But could I shed 25 points off these ships to slip in a Concord Dawn Ace? I really don't know. Thoughts?

So with the release of the C-ROC, I'd to try this crazy idea out. Has anyone had any success with Ordinance Tubes? I can definitely see how this can come back to haunt me when ships started maneuvering behind the ship's firing arc.

Ordnance tubes are great but on the bigger ships, Raider in particular. Automated Protocols is more the upgrade you want on the C-ROC to try and get some action efficiency. Maybe, if you're trying to make that one gun work, you might go optimized generator, but I don't think it's necessary.

To recap, a list of Fang Fighters and the Shadow Caster would get flattened. And no one seems to have any confidence in the Assault Missiles on the C-ROC. So, the only question is—how do we look at this problem as a whole? What would the Rebel list need to compensate for the Scum’s shortcomings and visa versa.

If it’s just Fenn and Ketsu without the C-ROC—what does The Ghost and rebels need to counter the swarm? Or if Merchant One makes its way in, what do the Rebels need to fly to keep its hull out of the fire. Looking for general ideas from anyone from Epic players to Revel players.

Alright.. Going thematic... Well, my recommendation, going back to your first list... The Shadowcaster isn't bad and Fenn Rau fits the theme. From there though go generic to lighten your cost and squeeze another fighter.

Your weakness is swarms and the C-ROC doesn't help you there. I like the ship, it can be flown cheaply, but you've committed a lot to your big two. Fly them cheap and smart. You can get your four protectorates that way maybe... Or a couple of cheap scyks/Z95s.
