Toturi Shigekawa's Daughter & the end of the Toturi Family

By LucaCherstich, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

In my own rpg games I'm homebrewing something about the Toturi heritage in later time-periods and I noticed that (in the past, AEG timeline) there was a Toturi family NOT composed of heirs of the Thrones but just as an another Imperial family (like Otomo, Seppun & Miya).

I also read that the last of them, Toturi Shigekawa, "bore the name Toturi until such time as he died, bearing only one child, a daughter, into the clan of her mother."

Which clan are we talking about?

I've heard that the identity of that clan was decided in a Card tournament...but, even if I love L5r, I do not play the card game: I'm in love with Rokugan only because of the rpg.

Does anybody know more about it?

Thanks a lot!

If you don't play the crad game and don't know what a tournament result was, why do you even care? Why not decide however you would like it to be in your game? The old canon is dead anyway, so why stick to it?

The Toturi family was different than their Hantei predecessors in that they really didn't have a stick up their backsides for most of their history (until Naseru came along and ruined everything). With the Hantei, when a new Emperor was crowned, only he would possess the Hantei name to enforce his divinity (hence why the Emperor was often simply called "The Hantei"). All other family members and relatives would have the name revoked. Likewise, if the heir of the Emperor survived to the age of their gempukku, all their siblings would sometimes be required to drop Hantei name upon their own coming-of-age. Normally, the Emperor, his heir and young children, and wife were the only 'Hantei' in the Empire.
For the Toturi, they were far more down to earth. Perhaps if they survived longer than a generation and some, they might have become more like the Hantei in practice, and limited who could have the Emperor's name. However, as it stands, aside from Naseru forcing Kaneka to drop the name in an open slap-in-the-face, it wasn't really brought up. In fact, the Toturi regularly bestowed their name upon favored vassels. Sezaru, Tsudao, and Kurako (Naseru's wife) were all examples of this.
As for Shigekawa's daughter, as far as I can tell, the tournament was dropped completely or forgotten with L5R's transfer to Fantasy Flight. The game's last days were very confusing and messy, from what I can tell. So, it's up to you. Please post more about this; what sort of setting are you homebrewing?

I know it's dead and I'm used to ignore stuff (I play about 100 years later than 4th edition starting point) !

It's just that I'm always eager to see more inspiration.

PS, I just remembered. If I recall correctly, the tournament for the fate of Shigekawa's daughter was won by the Mantis, who won most of the tournaments at the time. I think that was actually a major, major complaint, that the Mantis (and later Spider) was basically AEG's pet faction. I've actually seen lots of different sources voicing that complaint.

Regarding inspiration, well I simply ignored the extiction of the Toturi name for my games. I had multiple different approaches over the years.

1. Kurako became pregnant instead of commiting seppuku when the Khan attacked Toshi Ranbo... and she always claimed that husband had blessed her with a child to keep the line going, even though some romourmongers whisper about the child having Moto features...

2. Naseru had some bastard children before he married and one of them was later acknowledged as heir. If that is the truth or not is also up to your decision, but in my game that was in the end suppored by the Crane who got to re-establish the tradition that Emperor marries a Crane.

3. Shigekawa simply continued the name properly.

Maybe you like one of the ideas, go have fun with them!
