What is Five Rings Online?

Its is a online living campaign for Legend of the Five Rings roleplaying game 4th edition.

How do you play this campaign?

We play on a hybrid model of traditional Play by Post via forums but mostly (85-90%) via live chat.

When and where are setting the campaign?

We are setting the campaign in the year 926 on the edge of the shinomen forest in Sacred Stone Village. The city has been rebuilt by the ronin who saved the Emperor’s life some 15 years ago. The Iron-willed emperor has decreed that the shinomen forest be pacified for the good of the empire and has sent the Fourth Legion to complete this decree.

When do you guys run scenes?

We try and have GMs run scenes that favor Euro times and American times but sadly I will say American times are often the majority of scenes. Note this is just for the chat the Play by Post is of course a twenty four hour deal monday through Friday. There will be both scheduled and “Drop-in” scenes. Scheduled games are planned ahead and will be through sign-up on the forum. Drop-in scenes refer to any GM’s ability to log on and run a scene. This is encouraged, and Drop-in scenes will be used with some regularity.

Why are you making this post?

We are still in the planning stages of the campaign but are at a point where we think we could build out our gm team and really ramp things up for the grand opening of the ninth iteration of The Five Rings Online.

Hopefully FRO 9 is better than the disaster that was FRO 8.

FRO9 has a completely new GM team, and we are planing on handling things a lot differently but I would enjoy your feedback on what you disliked about FRO8 so we can further address those issues. So you and other people can have a more fun experience.

As the Head GM of FRO 6, who played since FRO 4, I can offer a lot of insight into what makes or breaks a game from my own mistakes and successes, to what I have seen over the years. Go ahead and send me a private message.

Good news!

I've been a player in FRO 6 and FRO 7, albeit not playing as often as I I would have liked to (Job&family steals my time + I live in Italy).

I completely missed FRO 8 and I hope I will play in FRO 9!

Thank you fo doing this again, especially since this (I hope it) means that we'll have another FRO with 4th edition rules!

We do plan on using 4th ed rules as ffg is busy with putting out a new leg and stories for l5r. Do note there will be some restrictions on schools and advantages due to when we plan to have fro9 set.

or is this RPG just a live thing?

Our wiki is the best bet but its kind of all over the place. But for now knowing the pre-game is really that is all that is needed.

Hi. Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I wasn't sure where else to put it.

I played in FRO7 and was really hoping to be able to join this game. Unfortunately every time I go to the site I get a page giving me an error 503 and that the admin had manually blocked access. I was just wanting to find out what's going on, if I'm able to join and if so, how I go about doing so.

What is the weekly time commitment for the (casual) player?

is this game still accepting applications? I've always wanted to try one of these but never found the time (or heard about them while still active)

What ever you want do note most of our gms are american timezones if that will be an issue for you.

We are but only till friday then we aren't going to accept any new players for about 2 weeks so we can focus solely on the game opening. But after that 2 weeks you can submit a character.

One more thing; is the Friday deadline for these 1 off pre-game characters or for the longer game? I'm down for either/both, but would rather save my first choice for a longer story.

Friday is only the temporary cutoff for the 1 off pre-game. The temporary cutoff is only in place for the first two week of the pre-game so we can wholly focus on that. After the pre-game is over you may submit another character for the longer main game.

Will be looking forward to submitting a character in two weeks.
