How Much Treasure per Encounter?

By John Jacob Jingleheimerschmidt, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hello, I'm working on a a sort of "Automated GM" system for 3ed so that it can be played by a group without a GM or even solo. You can't really have a detailed plot with the system, so it would basically be an old school dungeon romp. I'd probably be better off just getting an old copy of Warhammer Quest*, but I think I've got some good ideas.

One problem I'm stuck with, though, is treasure. I don't want to give out too much as it would violate the grim and gritty spirit of Warhammer, but I also want to give the player a sense of accomplishment. Any ideas on how much treasure the party of five should earn per average encounter? How much should that go up per character rank?

*=Hint, hint, FFG!

looking at warhammer... id say none.

if you are fighting chaos, do you really want to carry around something that was so close to corruption for so long? the fear of being close to chaos in any fashion should be enough to scare most anyone from looting the body of anyone affiliated with it.

if you are killing orcs... well they use their teeth as currency so that wont do you much good now will it?

if you are killing bandits, okay, here you might get some loot, but if they need to rob people, they probably dont have much!

My players get only what they enemies fought with (and big part of that is usually useless, or even dangerous - chaos - for them).

I try to keep them more on the story, less on the loot (alhough it is hard sometimes, as one of my players is a munchkin used to dungeoncrawls and goldike characters that carry tons of super-hyper-ultra magic items with them all the time).

But if you really want the loot, then you can use already functional Random Treasure Generator made by DagobahDave.

It can be found here: www.outworld-studio.com/html/treasure-generator-v301.htm

ANSWER:

Look at the weekly income for a MERCENARY in the back of the book. That is a good guide and also something that your players can use as an estimate of "what to appreciate."

I've read your responses and you guys are probably right. I'll just give out "chump change." In place of treasure I was thinking of something along the lines of "Destiny Points." Characters would start out as swords for hire and later join an organization (the Thieves Guild, Church of Sigmar, the Empire, etc...). For each mission completed for this group, players would get Destiny Points and, as they collect them, rise through the ranks of the group. At certain tiers, the players would get bonuses such as free healing. When they reach the topmost tier they have "won" the game. Their characters become NPC crime lords (Thieves Guild) or saints (Church of Sigmar) or are given fiefdoms to rule (Empire). New characters can be rolled up and interact with the old ones.

Got any ideas for Destiny Point bonuses? At the first tier, I was thinking the players could get free rooms and meals from their organization. After that, I'm not sure.

Have you checked out the Mythic GM Emulator? Very awesome RPG book which can be used independent of system. It allows you to play pretty much any RPG solo or GM-less. It creates story/situation/encounters; all it requires is that the players weave the details together to make a coherent whole.
