Do not get used to it but I gave a thumbs up to the video because L5R.

Maybe its cause I'm not a native english speaker, but i really like the accent.

I also expected that seeing the name of the thread, but what I got nevertheless made my happy!

Please make a animated short with voice acting and showing various scenes with the main characters. Done well it would generate crazy hype. Flashing to a duel, then some words exchanged between courtiers, then a Lion yelling at his troops with the unicorn in the background charging towards the camp.

I like this a lot because it shows a lot of dedication to this game by FFG and inspires confidence in me they will support it properly.

And offensive or not, the accent does a good job of communicating the inherent Asian-ness of the setting. Like, I don't see the video working with an American-accented narration. My opinion, of course.

I agree, it was a little odd, but it would not make sense with any other accent.

It "kills it" as I can't stop laughing each time I rewatch the vid . It is like the geisha advisor from Shogun 2.

I was actually thinking of the male narrator from the first Shogun, so we're on the same wavelength, it seems.

I don't think it's offensive, I'm interested though because the voice sounded to me like someone trained in British English as a second language, having picked up the affectations of that accent.

Why is everyone assuming the voiceover is being done by someone pretending to do an Asian accent? Is it not possible that the voice actor is actually Asian and is using their normal accent?

Considering FFG has the licence to use Star Wars it could have been a whole lot worse. Jar Jar could voiceover the next one if people are truly offended by a small piece of hype video meant to immerse the players into a game that is loosely based on Japanese culture.

I do not mind accents. I am not going to think less because of the lack of them but I do know that some people go crazy about them. If a Rokugani were to talk in a video, I would expect him to speak in rokugani. If someone were to say that he could know our gaijin languaje to communicate with us, I would point out the little detail of him being a fictional character and we being real, within The Thirteenth Floor, with him having no idea of our existence or his imaginary one. But if I do not have any issue with reading rokugani characters "speaking" in english* in the fictions, I see no point about worrying about accents in videos. Unless accent has a relevance in the character background/story, to me is unnecesary flavor.

Honestly, I am more worried about FFG not translating the fictions to other languages that will have the game translated. I am looking at you, fantasyflightgames.es

*with some japanese words throw in for, sometimes, flavoring

I don´t agree with the criticism. I actually like the accent.

And I lke FFG doing things like this. I dont know if this will be the top LCG, but they definitely are somehow bound to that purpose.

Just to clarify, when I said this I did not mean to convey that I found the speaker's accent offensive, but only that I could see such a critique leveled at it.

Yeap, the way Wizards does it with MtG, with the "animated" card artwork is quite nice. Something similar for L5R would be cool.

I think it's a metaphor, like when someone tells you, "I shall be your sword." Or when someone is called a sword-for-hire (though of course you can't buy the loyalty of these particulat swords).

All I can say is that the Kakita had a vassal family, the Ashidaka, who forged some of the finest blades.

I take it to mean that the crane work on and hone themselves, meaning they're expert courtiers.
