So maybe I'm late to the party on this one, but when Obi Wan kills Maul in rebels, Maul asks "...is he the chosen one?". To which, Kenobi responds, "He is". So that seems to link Luke to the prophecy of the chosen one who is supposed to bring balance to the force. In light of that, Luke's line, "It is time for the Jedi to end" could be his solution to balancing the force. Perhaps the writers and directors were give leeway to include that story thread into The Last Jedi and retcon the concept. Thoughts and musings?
Clues to Last Jedi in other SW movies and shows?
I think obi-wan is saying luke is the chosen one because after Anakin became vader, obi-wan believed he couldn't be the chosen one, but as we see in ROTJ obi-wan was wrong.

Was Vader the chosen one? I don't think so. It was Luke who redeemed him.
Lucas has always said anakin is the chosen one, so unless something in canon changes that's still the case.
