not sure if we talked about this when it was spoiled, but i'm not a fan...your running at least one agenda which can give you military icons and deadly is not sparse in stark...i guess its bonus is that you can search for it w/ kennels.

Stark, 0 gold, Item

solid card, cheaper then needle and no influence cost to get back, but no stealth.....plus against lanni it just means you're giving them a +1 STR bonus :P

stealth is always good, does lanni need knight's watch though? 3 gold slot in non night's watch lanni deck is packed.

i guess lanni was getting wrecked by The Hand's judgment? Or maybe Nate wants lanni to win dominence eaiser? is targ beating lanni too much and they need more free protection from burn? i don't get the need....if your using pay gold effecfts there are better ways to generate gold in lanni...

F5 Loyal Guard (character) x3

Baratheon, 2 gold, 1 STR, MIL, POW, Ally

House Baratheon Only

sigh. another add to what bara already has no problem with w/out helping the holes they have.

Response: After you win initiative, discard the top 2 cards of each opponent's deck.

interesting. a little overcosted but that could be because of confession/intimidate. Still not a fan of mill, but this is one of the better mill cards.

JerusalemJones said:

F8 Ahead of the Tide (event) x3

House Greyjoy Only

sick....bay of ice is an auto include now. did i mention sick? Drowned fanatic doesn't even need to be around for this to be sick....

Targaryen, 4 Gold, 3 STR MIL, POW, Dothraki, Lord, Noble

Renown

Response: After you win a POW challenge in which Khal Drogo is participating, choose and kill 1 character with lower STR than Khal Drogo.

renown is intriguing, not sure if he replaces jumping khal for me, but i'm sure control decks like this version.

JerusalemJones said:

F10 The Dragon's Blood (Attachment) x3

Targaryen, 1 gold, Boon

Targ character only.

Attached character gains the Noble crest and a POW icon.

not sure of the need again? does targ really want to run power of blood that bad? it might help against fury, but it also creates another target too....

JerusalemJones said:

Martell, 3 Gold, 2 STR, INT, Ally

Response: After you play Palace Spy from your hand, search your deck for 1 influence-providing location, reveal that card, and add it to your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

cool way to get Red Keep, not sure if they need too though for 3 gold and 1 icon. i'd rather just run paramour's...

JerusalemJones said:

F12 A Gentle PRison (event) x1

House MArtell Only

Challenges: Kneel 2 influence to stand a participating character, and remove it from the challenge. That character cannot be killed this phase

Might be too sophisticated for me...fearing a valar in challenges? don't like red vengance? afraid of stark or bara winter? martell events slots = 1st or 2nd most (to lanni) competative, really have to wow to put in.

JerusalemJones said:

F13 Rander of the Watch (character) x3

solid in night watch deck, not sure it replaces bird in all others.

JerusalemJones said:

F14 Septon Cellador (character), unique, x1

Neutral, 2 gold, 2 STR Night's Watch, Septon, Holy

No Attachments

Any Phase: Kneel Septon Cellador to shuffle any player's deck.

neutral holy character could be fun....screws over heralds, but haven't they been fading away anyway? might be good for lots of stalwart....

JerusalemJones said:

F15 Castle Black (location) unique x1

Neutral 2 gold, The North

Response: After you play a NIght's Watch character from your hand, reduce the cost of the next Night's Watch character you play this phase by 1.

this is something i wish bara could have instead of seat of power. notice it doesn't kneel?!?!?!?!

JerusalemJones said:

F16 Skinchanger (character) x3

Challenges: Skinchanger gains an icon of your choice until the end of the phase (limit once per phase).

holding critique for more wildling cards/agendas

JerusalemJones said:

F17 Craster (character), unqiue, x3

neutral, 2 gold, 5 str, INT, Wildling, Ally

If you lose a challenge in which Craster participated, the winning opponent draws 2 cards.

interesting 'drawback' for an under costed card....he takes attachments though so you could place your own milk on him....along with art of diplomacy and rusted sword.

JerusalemJones said:

F18 - WIldling Mead (Attachment) x3

neutral, 2 gold, Item

how i wish this wasn't wildling character only.....

interesting...gj winter loves it, bara might use it. lanni might start running 3x white raven's just cuz....

I wonder if there will be 3 of these for each (NW and wildling) 1 per icon?

I don't like Winter Festival.

Isn't Craster x1?

Yes, you are right. He is x1, not x3. Sorry about the mistake, and I fixed it in the main block.

I like Winter Festival.

I see some very good cards. I'll use for sure both Greyjoy, all the baratheon and the night's watch/wildlings. I'm not sure to run winter festival in my grey winter...

About Khal Drogo I'll have to test :-)

THX a lot for the spoiler!!!

[OT ]As soon as CCGarmory will have it available I'll order with my friends the CPs. For the update of OCGTG as always if someone send me the scans I'll update the plugin. Anyway in 3 weeks I should have mine [/OT]

hmm... I was hoping to see more Stark cards... was I the only one?

Pedro Lunaris said:

You were not the only one, though what was included was fairly typical of recent releases. They seem to try to put a little something for each house in every pack. I expect that will continue, though I think it's reasonable to expect some good Stark cards in this cycle.

the title of the CPs are not always indicative of the amount of cards any one house will have.

In this pack grey/Targa/Bara found love. I'm sure also Stark will have! Next Chapert tehre will be Benjen, Next Jon snow and so on.

I think we will have new Stannis, Daenery, and Melisandre (in this chap we have new Khal) cause are the only important char not reprinted after Core Set.

Thematically I hope Lanni will not have lot of love in this cycle.

At the moment I love all Night'sWatch/wildling cards

I suspect that this pack gives us a template for what we'll see in the future packs 2 cards for each house, 6 neutral cards, a plot and an agenda. With the concept of stackable agendas, I truly expect to see one in each pack. Same goes with one plot per pack, probably for the life of the game. The 6 neutrals may not always, but most likely will be, 50/50 wildling/Night's watch related cards.

At present, there is just a hint of cards to create a NW deck in the game. Most are neutral (Janos and Aemon about the only exceptions I can immediately think of). But by the end of the cycle we will probably have 6 more generic neutrals and 6 unique neutrals for the watch, plus other in-house characters. So I think that Castle Black will be a staple of every NW deck. In fact, it has to be, or NW decks aren't using their best reducer. The ability to chain character with this card is too good to pass up, and makes even OOH NW characters worth playing, if that is what the player wants.

I'm excited to put Palace Spy in my Martell deck. Martell has alot of influence-heavy events, and being able to play this character and then search for one is something I look forward to. I've always hated it when I have Red Vengence in my hand, yet only have 1 influnence, or if my second influence is the Fiefdom. This card just increases my chances of having influence when I need it.

I like what I'm seeing in this pack, and I'm pretty excited for this block as a whole.

Thanks for posting this, JJ.

There are some interesting cards in this pack. I find FFG's system of picking cards for the chapter packs a little disappointing though. Having heard about this set for months, I was excited to see what kind of Night's Watch and Wildling strategies would become possible. With this pack alone though, I'm not sure those strategies got quite enough of a boost to be really interesting yet. I felt the same way about the seasons and shadows. When the first chapter pack came out (or in the case of seasons, when I bought the first two (or three?) the cycle was already going when I got to the point of keeping up with the latest chapter pack), the featured mechanic seemed a cool new idea but didn't really have the support to capture my deck building imagination. I'm sure that as with the themes of the last two cycles Night's Watch and Wildling will snowball with future expansions into strategies with enough depth to be fun/interesting to build. I just wish that they would "frontload" the first couple packs in the cycle with cards supporting the main theme (eg how about just starting off making the character each house got in this first pack one that could have had the Night's Watch trait to open up the Night's Watch deck to each house a bit more? if a number of those characters lacked a Mil icon, it would also make the agenda more appealing).

I don't mean that to sound like I'm trying to take anything away from this pack, just that it didn't match expectations as the introduction to the cycle based on the North with Night's Watch and Wildling themes (Khal Drogo is cool but there are several Night's Watch characters with ties to Targaryen at some point in their past).

I'd say the cards I'm most excited about are Palace Spy (nice to have redundancy for The Red Keep without have to run multiples of it as a unique location it's a bit of card draw which is always nice, other nice influence providing locations worth searching for will probably show up at some point), Ahead of the Tide (not really my kind of card though the effect seems like it could be powerful in deck with a lot of rewards for winning initiative), and Winter Festival (in a Winter deck, it's a nice closer).

Can we take from this pack that there will be a Noble subtheme in this cycle of chapter packs (wasn't one of the crests supposed to get a nice boost this set per OP ballots?)?

I was actually more thinking it was Holy, as we saw two Holy-crested characters the Greyjoy priest and Septon Cellador. But Noble did get cards as well (The Dragon's Blood, the Bara guy, Drogo) so who can say at this point (personally, I voted for Learned).

If I were to start building a Night's Watch deck right now, I'd run it out of Bara. The only non-neutral NW characters at present are Janos and Aemon, and we already have neutral Aemon from the Core Set. I'd start with 2 copies each of Jon and Ghost, 1 each of Benjen, Aemon (maybe 2?), Denys Malister (PotS) and Cellador, and 3 copies of Ranger of the Watch. Two copies of Castle Black, one of the Wall, 3x Seat of Power and 3 winter ravens. Provided I got the Seat on the flop I'd use Building Season to search for the Wall and Time for Ravens within the first two turns to make it winter and turn all my Bara cards into NW guys. I've tried to build a NW bara deck before, but it always worked best out of Stark or, when Valyrian was still legal, Martell (Scorching Desert was killer with a NW deck in the old ccg days).

Wildlings at this point is the harder deck to build but just like the Skavens in Warhammer: Invasion, they get better and better with each new pack. That is one of the things I like about the LCG model (and I've said this before) the evolution of the cards and the cycles. That evolution, as much as the cards themselves, is what has me excited about this cycle.

Craster looks really strong - way undercosted and his drawback should never really hurt you. He's a nice add for any house weak on intrigue - which is pretty much only Stark at the moment.

The Targ attachment is the worst card in the set. Outside of Leage play it will never get out of the shoebox.

Are there many NW characters with a Targ affilition? I guess this attach isn't worth in a Targ deck, but maybe it could be useful in a NW deck... don't know, just advocating for the devil, I guess...

Pedro Lunaris said:

even there it will eventually be unneeded as there will most likely be an agneda giving all NW a power icon...

Well... put it on CS-Strong Belwas and he becomes a self-saver (for 2 gold). Maybe it's a harbinger of more Noble support?

I definitely think Noble support seems to have won the day... boo!

I personally would be very disappointed if they front loaded the CP's to represent the new mechanic theme. I don't want to be in a place where I'm forced to play with them or no new cards at all. I'd rather a couple cards to act as teasers and start getting my interest, or simply set them aside and deal with the stuff that immediately improves my decks. This way we have a little more choice.

Greyjoy initiative stealer event is pretty nasty. I like card search in almost any form, so the Martell character might have its uses for me, but it's got competition to make the cut in the least. Craster is really solid for that cheap, especially with the easily circumvented "drawback". And the new Khal Drogo is awesome control.

Oh, I agree that it's nice to have open ended cards as well, but I think to some extent you make cards that serve both purposes. For example, in this pack, a few more of the characters could have been given the Night's Watch trait and the Seat of Power could have been given The North trait. The card titles and flavor might have to have been changed, but they could have been almost identical mechanically and opened up more options for working with the Night's Watch theme. That's just a personal pet peeve of mine (another example: Small Council Chamber in Secrets and Spies without a single Small Council event in the pack when they were arranging the cards into chapter packs for KLE, couldn't they at least have put Condemned by the Council in the same pack as Small Council Chamber?).

Also, I'm just curious is having cost reducer options a Baratheon theme? So far they have had Summer Port and Seat of Power whereas all the other houses pretty much just have the fiefdoms, +1 gold for 0, and reduce by 2 for 2 locations (Martell has a slightly different line up). I think it might be interesting if other house had some different reducers to allow to develop their in game resources a bit differently from each other.

all the other houses do have different ways of devloping their in game resources, its just that it is character based. Stark and targ have character -1 reducers. lanni has the gold producing characters. Greyjoy has ice fisherman. Martell doesn't yet, but their set-up allows for diveristy in location choices and with targ they have other then refugee's 0 cost characters.

Don't forget Dorne for Martell. With the number of cheap Ally characters they have, you can 2-4 characters for a gold or 2 total. And Dorne will also work great in a Night's Watch or WIldling deck. Use Dorne, declare NW, chain with Castle Black = swarm.

It struck me that Winter Festival has probably upped the chance of a game having two players simultaneously reach their win condition from almost unheard of to reasonably possible and, since it naturally means both players are revealing the same plot, there's a decent chance when it happens there will be a tie for initiative and a die roll/coin flip (to determine first player) that will effectively decide the winner of the game. That should elicit some howls the first time a person loses in such a fashion.

well i doubt it will happen very often at 14 to 14, at least not in joust. so if its winter verse non winter and its 13 to 14 the winter player wins, which might mean more howls.....

in melee you need to start being more judicious w/ you high initiative plots, that's all...easy enough right.....:P

I don't follow your winter versus non-winter player. Both players will either receive one power or two power since they'll both be experiencing the same season. I do agree the 13 vs 14 heading into the plot would give the win to the 13 player.
