That's right. No Mantis. No Spider.

Impermanence is one thing; sadness/wistfulness/bittersweetness isn't really required for the mechanic, though.

Yeah man, how dare these game designers use something like philosophy, art, or anything even remotely intellectual or spiritual in their game. Don't they know that this is entirely a pleasurable waste of time for everyone playing it and that even attempting deeper themes is for... doodybrains?

Also, I think/hope that the Mantis will be introduced the same way that the Wasp/Badger/Fox/Spider/makesomeup will be in this game. There will be a cycle with that clan in it, and we'll play with/against that clan for that cycle, and eventually they cycle out. As far as I'm aware, expansions are never permanent in these games, only the core set is. So, in other words, with Mantis not being in the core, there will probably never be a permanent version of them in this game. The 7 clans, and others, on a cyclical basis. I think that fits on a number of levels personally.

That wasn't meant as a dig against art and philosophy in general; I just don't really know that I care for this philosophy, specifically. More specifically, my comment was addressed towards those who were claiming that the philosophy was essential for the design to be as it is, and I don't feel that the mechanics need the philosophy in order to have been developed.

Didn't someone say the deluxes were also permanently legal? So there's hope yet!

Though, I still wish we could do away with legality cycles altogether. Ah, well. It's an FFG LCG, and they're unlikely to change their model just for one game.

This would be my first competitive LCG from FFG. I'm a fan of the LOTR LCG, but that's different. From what I understand a 'cycle' in these games involves the core(at all times) and up to two deluxes and their associated adventure/data/dynasty packs. So we have Core, Expansion 1 and 6 packs, Expansion 2 and 6 packs, and then when Expansion 3 comes out, Expansion 1 and everything with it goes bye bye, and then 4 replaces 2 and so on.

I think.

There's probably confirmation of this kicking around somewhere...

The thing is though, if I am right, that means that either they going to be releasing the Mantis again and again over the course to make sure that they're in the game, same story with the Spider/shadowlands... Or, we just embrace the new dawn. Which I think could actually be better. I'd be so down for something like the Badger Clan, or some Kitsune, or a Ratling, or whatever they got getting some proper time in the sun for a cycle and changing the way Rokugan interacts with the world around it. And then, for some stories, Mantis might find their way back in multiple times, same with the Shadowlands. But yeah, I'm happy for some new direction and new life with this new game.

A cycle is a group of six monthly packs (L5R will be Dynasty Packs). The expansions are themed boxes but do not always relate to the cycle that it is released during.

In LOTR, you also add the expansion to the cycle because you need those encounter cards to build decks for it.

Rotation begins when the 8th cycle is released. The oldest two cycles rotate out. A visual explanation can be found here.

From that link:
"Our new rotation policy dictates that the standard card pool, for use in all Organized Play tournaments, will consist of a game’s Core Set, its deluxe expansions, and its latest five to seven cycles of monthly packs." (emphasis mine)

So there's still hope of introducing permanently legal clans! ^_^

Die in a fire. Don't really see the intent here, but that's what it means.

No one expects the Crane Inquisition!

The Manta clan, maybe? It could have a pretty cool mon, and the name would be almost the same.

Maybe something like this:

I might make the color slightly more green, so that it's between 'aqua blue' and green.

Please don't bring that kind of silliness here, even in jest.

Perhaps not, but luckily Rokugan =/= Japan.

Whether Rokugan is or is not Japan has nothing to do with my post. I walking about real world philosophy and real world game designers. Rokugan has nothing to do with it.

Well, that seems like an awfully extreme reaction...

In Rokugan it means something else.....

DIAF = Don't Inhale Asahina Farts

Just another salty Kakita trying to start an inter clan rivalry. Pay him no mind.

Mantis clan is alright compared to many other sea creatures, but why not reuse one of the more mystical ones for the clan name? The Orochi clan.

Because there is all this artwork that FFG now owns that uses the Mantis mon already.

Well, you can always start with the reusing of old artwork, even artwork with some Mantis mons, then gradually get to awesome new artwork with a new mon. There actually seems to be more of an issue with Mantis being mainly green (the new color of the Dragon) than Mantis mons.
