That's right. No Mantis. No Spider.

We know that Yoritomo does exist, and I would like to see him getting to found his own clan.

Only if he forms the Brotherhood of Shinsei.

I like it. Mono no aware looks like a core philosophy as part of the game design which is expressed through the fate mechanic.

I like the mechanic, I just find the philosophy a bit odd and I'm not sure how I feel about it being tied so strongly to the game design. I need to think about it a bit more.

I think this is one of those you can't have one without the other type deals. Mono no aware is the philosophy of the mechanic, impermanence. You really can't have the mechanic without the philosophy.

The connection makes a lot of sense if you are familiar with how prominent the philosophy is in Japanese Samurai media.

The life of a Samurai is often directly compared to short length of the beautiful Sakura (Cherry Blossom) season.

Impermanence is one thing; sadness/wistfulness/bittersweetness isn't really required for the mechanic, though.

Perhaps. But I think you're also looking at this as the reverse of how I am. You are looking at the philosophy being applied to the mechanic. I am looking at the mechanic being applied to the philosophy.

As in the philosophy came first, not the mechanic. Since the philosophy is pretty prevalent in samurai cinema.

Eh. If they do Mantis, I hope they make/let them play with everyone else, instead of hiding on their islands to sit out entire arcs, and periodically emerging to do something without taking any measurable consequences...

Yes. I rolled my eyes when the Mantis won ground wars. I imagine if you want to defeat the Mantis, all you have to do is put embargos and tariffs on cargo shipped to their islands. I understand them winning in naval warfare occasionally, but keep in mind the Crab, Crane, and Phoenix had naval forces too. The Great Clans should have never had too much trouble fighting them in full on conflicts. They're great for a reason.

Obligatory reminder that all Mantis and Spider players are invited to join the Phoenix clan. Stop living in the past, man. Come be with us in the future!

The future that's apparently so rosy neither the Phoenix nor the Unicorn merited a single mention in the first piece of fiction put out under FFG's stewardship...

We're too busy to deal with teenage drama.

They are hiding the dark arts of the Phoenix for another time. Oni, Maho and Black Scrolls Oh My!!

(Phoenix at their best IMO)

I like the Phoenix either way, but enjoy them corrupt better. But then Lion blitz bores me, so if that is all Lion has in the new version i may have to try corrupting Phoenix.

Feel free to try and have the Phoenix replicate the narrative problems the Spider created. By all means.

The Phoenix never got to be terribly heroic under AEG's stewardship, so I'd like to see that... but they also need to strut their stuff as villains without the lame, narratively craptious excuse of "Evil magic is Evil." The Phoenix don't need maho to be villainous.

I liked Phoenix Inquisitors as villains. I mean nobody expects ....

It may have been easier if they made up seven new clans instead of taking a selection of the existing great clans. Honestly, none of this means anything to me as I'm new to L5R, but maybe people would feel less entitled then. Of course, they couldn't recycle the artwork "as is" then. I'm sure that was a factor for them. It's also why I think Mantis and Spider will be included at some stage.

Revolts over Great Clans being replaced by new Clans: 100% chance.

I dunno, I would have been down for the Seven Great Clans being the Sparrow, Fox, Dragonfly, Badger, Centipede, Hare, and Wasp... ;)

And then people worries of Clan Loyalty being impacted by LCG model. :P

Mantis fans would be some options, at least.

At that point, why bother to buy the existing IP?

I understand the frustration of players whose factions got shelved. It isn't the first time that it's happened in the game. Some people have quit over it, and some people have played different clans and adapted. I don't understand why people can't leave fans of the retconned factions have hope that they'll one day emerge again.

Where's the Oriole clan? I won't play this game if the Oriole clan isn't included.

Personally, fewer clans makes for an easier game to balance.

I'll happily consider it! I'm sure the clan of Isawa Akuma presents exciting changes for somebody like me!

So, what would you say that are the taint posibilities in the position you are offering me?

(good) (bad) (none) Strike the ones that don't apply.

Are you corrently in possession of certain items called Black Scrolls? If so, would you be willing to inspect them for me?

Yess. I know what you want. Power, yess. Give me what I want and I give it to you. Ssuch a ssmall price to pay.
