Broken peg mounts

By BlodVargarna, in X-Wing

Hey guys, does anyone know if FFG is still replacing ships when components break on them?

I have about 4 ships I can't use now because the part where the peg fits them has broken on all of them.

Dunno about the replacement, but drilling a hole did the job for me.

They did last time I asked but it was around wave 7. I'm just magnetising any that break now.

Yes they are.

The magnet fix is easy and useful. I'm just doing that every time now.

Anyone have good ideas for the Quackjumper or other "small" ships that don't want to stay in place when magnetized? I'm wishing that I had left the peg alone on that little tug.

I just super glue them back together. Happens too often for FFG to get involved.

@BlodVargarna They replaced a large ship for me back in February. I included pics, but that's not always necessary.

@gamblertuba Three suggestions:

  1. Have you tried "doubling up" on the magnets? Stacking the magnets may be all you need to do to get a stronger grip. That may not work if you're using the ball bearing and conutersunk hole combo.
  2. Try using stronger magnets. You'd have to deal with all the nonsense of removing the old ones and buying & mounting the new ones, so that may not be the best option.
  3. To "go back" to as close to the original pegs:
    - Remove the magnets/mounting peg you have.
    - Drill a hole in the ship model where you want to add the mounting peg (5/32" bit should do). The Quadjumper is hollow so there's only about 1/8" of material to drill through.
    - Cut/saw the top off a small ship peg down in half or about 3/8" so the female/receiving part of the peg remains.
    - Dry fit the ship & the cut peg and mark where the front arc is on the peg itself. You can put tape on the peg and mark the tape if you want to avoid having a mark on your new mounting peg.
    - Check the ship/base orientation TWICE. Then glue the two parts together.
  4. Profit!

You can do this (do magnet fix). Watch this video -

I'm not to impressed with K&J Magnetics. I put together an order that came to about $19. Shipping almost doubled the cost at another $`13. I deleted the order...

I take a pin vice (a small tool that holds a drill bit) and a piece of brass rod.

I drill out a hole in the bottom of the ship where the mount used to be. Then I use some pliers to cut off the bottom of one of the clear stand pieces (2 come with every ship) to use as the new peg mount, drill a hole through the top of it and use the brass rod to pin it to the ship with a little super glue. The rod makes it stronger than the original.

Pin Vice and Rods. You can buy a cheap tool and then purchase a pack of the rods in the size you need. I purchased the P3 kit years ago, and I still use it. Fixes just about anything, even DnD figures that won't stay glued. I level down the area and scratch it for a better gluing surface with a small Gerber pocket knife I bought from the Walmart gun case. It's served me well for a decade without dulling even after using it on metal Warhammer models.

About the only way to get some metal minis stuck together but you wear out the drill bit faster. You may end up using a smaller drill bit for the pin vice than it comes with. So you'll have to buy thinner rods too. None of this is very expensive.

Getting a replacement for my broken K-Wing could be cool; I planned on magnetizing it when it broke but that was before the New Year came around and I still haven't gotten around to it, meaning I'm down to one usable K-Wing. The problem with getting them to replace a K-Wing though is "Do they even have any K-Wings?" Probably not.

I need to get a list together of stuff I need replaced though. A copy of a new game arrived with a slight dent in a corner when caused one of the chits on a punchboard to be ruined, my spare Armada maneuver tool I bought is defective, I need a replacement base for one of my Armad ships because one of the slots to slot a shield dial onto was improperly tooled leaving the dial to spin freely when attached, and more. One of these days I'll hit them up. The only time I have dealt with them so far for replacement items was when I bought a copy of Eldritch Horror that contained no plastic bases for character tokens to slot into and FFG was quick with getting replacements out. That was before the Asmodee acquisition though and I've heard some Asmodee horror stories in the past, but I haven't seen any negative comments since then.

My K-Wing's peg broke when I assembled it for the first time. I magnetized it (about 15min), and it is more comfortable way to handle ship than standard peg.
So I magnetized my YT-2400 also. It's peg wasn't broken but slightly loose.

Okay, I was remembering wrong. Here's what the inside of the Quadjumper looks like:

There's more like 1/4" of material there.
