Raider or Gozanti?

By Celestial Lizards, in X-Wing

Before you yell at me that this thread already exists, it does not take into account the new Palpetine. I want to know which ship I should buy to go up against the new C-ROC that I am getting for my brother. Which is more effective in a 300 point game as well as which is better for standard play and tournaments?

Raider...and you get the Adv updates :)

Gozanti comes with two TIE's and a bunch of pilots. Wampa is about the best. Gozanti itself is the more cost efficient capital ship.

Raider does come with the TIE advanced with important upgrades if you want to fly them. Raider can be equipped to do a lot of shots but is very points intensive. About half your epic fleet. Be sure to take dice mods like Captain Jonus as a few bad rolls will ruin its potential.

I think the Gozanti is better overall, but if you only play Epic, the Raider is fun.
Mainly because you can always trade cards with someone to get the Tie Advanced updates (like I did) and its not that great of a ship in the meta anyway. Whereas the Gozanti gives you Wampa, and has some really fun shenanigans for Epic.

They have different roles. So, do you want:

The Imperial battleship that you can unload waves of hot plasma death on small starfighters

OR

A cheaper, less offensive starship carrier that lets you launch effective alpha strikes from far across the board.

OTOH, since you are planning on playing vs. the C-ROC, the Gozanti would be the more similar/"equal" ship in terms of points and play style.

Also, couldn't I buy stuff like Automated Protocals and Ordnance Tubes off of Ebay for the Raider?

Both.

I think Gozanti is a better value if you have to prioritize though.

You can, or trade for them... or wait... this is epic, you don't actually need the cards since tournaments are so rare. Seriously, on epic ships it's generally better to print from a squad builder that can handle it since there are generally so many upgrades on your ship... But yes, you can get the cards elsewhere. I have one copy of each of the epic modifications without so far getting the Gozanti.

Do you want the cool Ties or an an updated Advance tie?

Both of the ships epic are outstanding which is why I bought both and which is the question posted above.

From a money standpoint the Tie Advance titles resale quickly and it brings the cost of the raider down inline with the Goz.

Kallus is a solid card and Palp is palp. The raider is more of a hammer and the Goz is more of a support ship with firing Opp that can carry ties across the battle, both ships are extremely useful. With all of that aside my question comes back to which small ships do you want because they really are both good. If you want the newer better painted ties with some cool pilots pick the Goz, if you want some really solid Advance pilots go with the raider.

Darth Meanie got this right. Though you want to have bombers to go with that Gozanti. Else I would still go with the Raider.

Not sure anyone can answer this question as none us will be quite sure how the C-ROC is going to play. However when I play Epic we restrict to the large huge ships (Raider/CR90) or the small huge ships (Gozanti/GR75) or both to keep the games balanced. On this basis, if you're only getting one, the Gozanti would be my recommendation as the C-ROC is in the smaller bracket. The Raider would be easily overwhelmed with fighters as the Scum side would have so many more free points. Taking the Gozanti also means you can go for 200 point games on 3x3 mats which are quicker and easier compared to 300 point games. I also find the Gozanti more fun - those Docking Clamps are great.

Don't get me wrong the Raider is a great ship and the TIE Advanced cards are indispensable. Much more valuable than Palpatine ever was or is - for me.

I don't typically fly swarms, I'm more of a heavy-hitter Decimator/Phantom/Defender player. TIE/Fs don't really match my style, the Advanced does more. Then again, I would love to carry my Bombers into the middle of a fight.

TIE-Fighters are TIE/LN

Yeah, I know. But some people don't. So I did TIE/F for all those non-nerds like us.

In epic play, the Raider is king. The single cannon on the Gonzanti tends to feel like a slightly bigger Decimator.

Ha ha - everyone's a nerd here!

Are there any non-nerds here?

Anyway, in 200 to 300pt games the Gozanti is best. In 400pts, they're each very good to use. In 500+ pt games, 1 raider plus up to 2 Gozantis are best. Or 2 Raiders...

The most important thing is to agree with your opponents how many points to spend on huge ships because they are less efficient than small/large.

My brother and I think we will be doing 300pts.

And then you unleash your bombers and alpha strike a section of the raider and rip it a new one. ^_^

But the Gozanti is not a Decimator. Docking Clamps paired with Vector. Suppressor with Grand Moff Tarkin. Vader crew with Shield Technician. The turret is a bonus not what it's built around. I also rate the GR75 above the Corvette and that doesn't even have an attack! Toryn Farr, Frequency Jammer and Dutyfree is simply awful to play against. These small epic ships are incredible for their points.

And price. Found some new Gozantis for $50 at my game store, and cheapest I've ever seen a new Raider was $85.

Well when I was modding Nerf guns, I was saying the same thing.

I would go with the Gozanti on the pure fact that you said you wanted to pair up against your brother's C-ROC. The Gozanti is in line with it, while the Raider matches against the CR-90.

I got my raider for 43 ish.

Barns and Nobles sells X-wing stuff, if you have a membership for their year thing, it brings the cost of toys down by 10% ontop of any sales. If you find a coupon for a toy it also applies with the discount from the membership. In short my raider was 60 on sale and with discounts it was 43 ish. Amazon warehouse will sell damaged boxes cheaper then the normal cost, Min Market will sale damaged boxes at their store much cheaper. Discounts on ships are out there if you look around or wait till Black Friday or sale palp along with 2 sets of the tie advanced titles. I will not quote 2nd hand prices but would not be surprised if selling cards from the raider would net you a Goz.
