He actually is for a couple of the missions as it turns out. The real joke of it would be him having to go back for his messenger bag, which naturally contained Uncle Itchy's questionable holo-vids from the Holiday Special, on their way back to Chewie's treehouse village for Wookiee Life Day.

But, the joke's on the heroes, as it turns out he had it all along, it was just lost in his fur. Now they're stuck on Hoth with Zuckuss and 4-LOM closing in (so we can finally complete the "Executor Team Photo") and they'll have to blast their way out...again.

The Leia from that era might have also remembered she stashed a giant pack of "glitterstim" in the toilet tank in her quarters and needs to get it before the Snowtroopers find it and flush it. If her fingernail in Return of the Jedi is anything to go by, the timeline of this story could take place anywhere between Empire and in and around that movie.
