Planet suggestions needed!

By TheShard, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I need a few planet suggestions for a setting.

I need an industrial planet/system that wouldn't be as crazy militarized as something like kuat, but still linked to the Empire. Preferably with orbital debris or interesting cosmic phenomena. Preferably close-ish to yavin.

I also need a suitable world for a couple of hideouts. Something gritty but outta the spotlight.

Bonus for stuff that has some obscure history Factoid that I can use as a jumping off point.

Fondor could work well as an industrial system, though it also contains orbital shipyards. Perhaps Mechis III if your alright with killer droids and almost no organic inhabitants whatsoever. Raxus Prime is also good if you can get past the pollution.

For a hideout there's always Jubilar. A spice driven former penal colony with a love for psuedo-gladiator combat.

Cymoon 1 might work. It was introduced in the new comics and has some orbital debris, and lots of junk yards. It does contain a large Imperial weapons factory, but the rest of the moon isn't as military oriented.

Maybe this isn't all that helpful, but have you tried inventing the planets and locations you want? I find that it is often too much of a hassle finding exactly the kind of place I want and, even if I do, half the time its on the other side of the galactic map from where I need it to be. I've spent hours surfing Wookiepedia for a planet that solves all of my problems and, in so doing, i've learned one very important lesson: It's sooo much easier just to invent the planet(s) you need. You can name them whatever you want and detail them however you want. The galaxy is a very big place after all.

Chances are the person in your game who cares the most about exactly what planet the action is on is you. Give your locations a little flavor and a spark of adventure, and your players will be happy. You can rest easy in the fact that you are not an FFG game designer who has to use a "famous" location that will sell lots of books! (If Tatooine is such an out of the way, hole-in-the-wall Outer Rim dump, how come every other adventure seems to take place there? Or on Bespin, which is after all supposed to be some third-rate, backwater mining colony that no one has ever heard of?).

My advice is make your own. Then it will fit perfectly into your adventure. The locations and NPCs will be yours to do with as you please without risking any pesky Cannon-destroying disintegrations. They will become places your players can relate to on a more personal level; Your places. It's also a lot of fun.

If you're worried that you can't do it, trust me, you can. All you really need is a name, a few NPCs to give the place some character (which you should have anyway), and a few locations in orbit or dirt-side (tailored exactly to your needs) where adventure can happen. For example:

You wrote: "I need an industrial planet/system that wouldn't be as crazy militarized as something like kuat, but still linked to the Empire. Those famous places like Kuat or Alderaan will still be there when you want them. Well, maybe not Alderaan...

Here's one that I just came up with.

Vildebrant.

Vildebrant is a rocky mountainous world with less water than many habitable worlds. It is not however a desert world, and the mean temperature is not particularly hot, being a fair distance from the system's star. The gravity is about 1G and the day/night cycle is reasonably close to galactic standard, adding only a few minutes to each day.

While rich in certain useful ores, stellar tidal forces in the system are a navigation hazard and result in a world that is geologically active, and living there entails a certain amount of risk. Due to this, the world's cities are built on platforms supported by flexible stilt like pillars. The whole thing is controlled by a complex computer system that controlls the pillars to flex and keep the cities relatively stable throughout all but the worst of earth quakes. There are also a few smaller repulsor lift equipped cities in what ammounts to very low orbit, similar to the famous Cloud City, albeit smaller.

Most mining takes place in “the rubble fields” where tectonic activity has pushed up materials from deep below. This surface layer is sifted through for valuables, much akin to panning on a grand scale, and once depeleted abandoned until the next time it's churned up. Larger companies are constantly on the lookout with various monitoring posts for rich finds. The Rock Hounds, those who find new and rich rubble fields, have an almost mythilogical air about them. The best of them are said to be able to know by the feel of an earthquake under their feet where the good ore loads will be coming out, and can make a fortune in consulting fees alone.

The planet has a number of small shallow seas that support life, but other than fish there are few large animals native to Vildebrant. There are some dangerous native fauna however. Specifically Rippers. These chitenous insects resemble oversized horseshoe crabs with many legs. Their mineral infused shells are known to be extremely durable and they can burrow through ceramiplast given enough time. They travel in swarms which can kill and strip a living human sized being in mere minutes. While their shells are durable enough to resist even blaster fire, they are known to be less resilient against electricity or heat, both of which their shells conduct easily. Many vehicles that have to travel the surface

Most of the smelting and heavy industry takes place on the surface, but there are also a number of orbital factories that build more delicate devices and products away from the shaking surface. There is also a modest shipyard that builds ships on license from both CEC and Kuat Drive Yards. Because the shipyard builds imperial military gear, though not in large number or scale, there is an Imperial military outpost on an old Golan I space defense platform in orbit.

The planet is mostly populated by humans, with a notable sub population of Rodians and Twi'lek, and a smattering of other species. It's main import is food water and luxury goods, and it's main export is minerals of varying exoticness and finished technological goods.

In theory the whole planet is run by a council of the leaders of the city states, influenced heavily by the powerful mining corporations, and overseen by an Imperial “advisor.” The whole thing is notoriously inefficient and ponderous, and generally each city state deals with it's own affairs, paying only lip service to the rulings and works of the "Grand" council.

Yea, that place sounds pretty gritty and far from any spotlights.

In this era, Telos IV would serve your purposes well. You know all the Ithorian's restoration efforts from KoToR II? Well, Telos' resources have been stripped and it has become an industrial world and corporations have effectively become the ruling body. The Empire conquered it around 17 BBY. It was home to a secret Jedi enclave and a group of Telosian environmentalist is currently cruising around the galaxy in a nomadic ship known as the BioCruiser.
