Other Franchise Possibilities (Speculation)

By subtrendy, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

What other franchises would you be interested in seeing in a game like this? Star Wars is probably my favorite franchise of all time, but I think there are some other things I'd totally invest in if they were available.

Personally, I think Lord of the Rings would be a strong contender- FFG already makes LOTR licensed games, anyway. The only issue, of course, is that it's thematically pretty similar to Descent. Game of Thrones kind of fits the bill here too, though perhaps thematically not quite as well as LOTR.

One sort of "Left Field" idea would be something based on Steven King's The Dark Tower series. It could be set before the fall of Gilead, and have generic gunslinger heroes. What's cool is aside from the Dark Tower themed enemies that would surely be included, there could also be other King related enemies in the campaign, like Pennywise or Kurt Barlow.

As much as I'd love a King set, I think one that would probably sell much better is something based on Marvel or DC. I think the best way to handle something like this is to simply let the heroes be actual Marvel heroes rather than generics, since canon is much more of a complex issue in comics than with something like Star Wars. It'd actually be a blast making a team of 4 very distinct heroes and battle minions and supervillains.

Also, I'm a huge Assassins Creed fan (so much so that Ubisoft is actually sending me to E3 next month), so I think an Assassins Creed thing could be cool, but many mechanics would probably have to change to allow for more of a stealth component. Maybe the Clawdite can be of some inspiration once we see it.

Anyway, any other thoughts on franchises that would work in something like IA?

It wouldn't be my favorite, but my kids (who LOVE Imperial Assault) would be all over a Harry Potter version. It would seem to be a natural with spells, items, villains, and a decent amount of different characters to play. The Star Wars theme is what pulled me and my kids into IA, so it would be tough to top, but for them Harry Potter might be close.

First one you mentioned, Lord of the Rings. I want it so bad but my wallet doesn't.

Now that the Emperor is out, all I need is Yoda and I think I could end my IA obsession...only to start a new one with LOTR :P

Ooh, yes! I've heard that idea tossed around before, and I think it sounds great.

I'm not even that big of a Harry Potter fan, but I think something like that would be really fun.

I actually think someone linked to one of the original IA game designers Reddit Q&A, and one of the questions was what licensed content he would really want to work with (other than SW) - and Harry Potter was his answer for a dream game.

I am massively paraphrasing here, and relying on my 41 y/o memory (which is dangerous), but I think I have the story right. :D

Babylon 5

Star Trek! I think it could work much like SW. Already many more stories, characters and aliens. It has a much larger universe to work with than SW, too. Call it Star Trek Away Missions. Pick a faction and explore or duke it out in skirmish.

Wow I have to go with Harry Potter. As much as I wouldn't enjoy the miniatures as much, seeing as how 90% of the characters dress in robes, it would be perfect for this format.

If they did that, my wife would be spending all this money instead of me.

I think instead of Star Wars, I'd be happy with "A star wars story" with no opening crawl.

There are LotR.Minis from Games Workshop. ; )

I think an overwatch skirmishgame would be nice. Alle the overwatch charakters as Minis, that would be great. : D

Yep, I used to collect them as a kid! :D

My little brother and sister still paint them.

There's actually a Harry Potter Miniatures Game coming out this fall. No idea if the gameplay will be any good or not but I'm keeping an eye on it.

I'd want a Gears of War version of IA. Wait that sort of already exists. Gears of War the Board Game is from one of the same designers and feels somewhat similar. Same scale minis too.

Or Mass Effect. I really want a Mass Effect board game.

Ooh, Mass Effect is a great idea! I just finished Andromeda yesterday, and I love the original trilogy.

DC CW Arrowverse. Arrow, Flash, maybe Batman

Gotta say I think LotR probably lends itself best to the format.

Other franchises like Harry Potter or Star Trek can be a little too... Conflict-lite...?

Not every away mission should be solved by shooting the crap out of the opposition...

OK, I hate this non-SW blasphemy altogether :P , but as long as we're playing this game...I think a Marvel vs DC deathmatch would be amazing. Good luck with the IP.

Team Covenant asked what intellectual property people would like to see brought to the table top, and my response was The Legend of Zelda in the same vein as Imperial Assault. It's naturally a campaign style game. Plus a lot of iconic main characters and great secondary characters for ally and villain packs, and great monsters, big and small, and races for the more trooper type packs and expansions that would provide variety for skirmishes.

I can think of half a dozen older SNES and Playstatiom RPGs. Suikoden is the one really sticking out in my mind though.

a Western or fallout universe could be cool. i know there is a Fallout board game coming out with some cool minis.

A super hero team up game would be pretty cool. with big bad guys and henchmen

I was insanely sad when I saw that the XCOM game was not an IA style tactical game but a strategic sim. I really want to get my Assaults and Snipers leveled to the nines and wreck xeno faces.

There's already a pretty complete Marvel/DC minis game in Heroclix . No idea how fun or not it is, having played it once, but it is out there if you don't want to wait for FFG.

The witcher novels/world could possibly fit well in a system like this.

Wholesale copy the Gwent card art from the video game version onto unit entries and that's your first 10 waves sorted.

One of my first topics here was Mogul Assault in which I planned out a core game and 11 expansions (I think) to fill out the entire LOTR trilogy!

I would love a Stargate version of IA. The mission style lends itself perfectly to a campaign.

i think hero clix is more battle of armies. not really a super hero team up bashing through henchmen to complete objectives and being stopped by a big super villian or super villian team.

campaign mode with super heroes. ultimate alliance style
