Squaring Up through multiple units

By John333, in Runewars Rules Questions

Suppose you have a single tray hero and you charge the corner of a 3x3 unit. What happens if you go to square up but you cant because there is an enemy unit that you would run into if you squared up in either direction because it's so congested. So if you go right you overlap a unit, and if you go left you overlap a unit. Basically you went right between two enemy units to hit the corner of a third enemy unit behind them. The rules would suggest you basically just hang tight correct?

The second part to my question is suppose you hit exactly in the middle of your tray, so it could have squared up either way. Are you now technically able to target the side of the enemy unit you just charged and get the benefits of flanking or do you target the front rank? Or since your right in the middle to do get to choose?

You got it right. If you aren't able to square up then you leave your unit exactly where it was when the collision occurred.

RRG, pg 17:
'Repeat these resolutions for any additional obstacles. Then, if it is still impossible for the moving unit to square up without colliding with an obstacle, the unit cannot square up and it is returned to the position it was in when it collided; the two units are still touching and are thus still engaged'

Yup. If you don't have more trays on one side you can go whichever direction that you prefer. This is always the case for single tray units.

RRG. pg 17:
'77.2 If the front edge of a moving unit collides with a corner of an enemy unit, a player aligns the right angle on the base of the range ruler with the contacted corner of the enemy unit so that the range ruler is aimed over the moving unit. Then, he determines the number of the moving units’ trays on each side of the range ruler, not counting any trays the range ruler passes over. If one side has more trays on it than the other, the moving unit must pivot in that direction. If both sides have the same number of trays, the player who controls the moving unit chooses which direction to pivot the unit '

So when attacking you would decide which side of the unit you are targeting for the purpose of flanking? Because you wounded square up you would be just touching the corner.

I would assume so. When contact is through the corner you use the edge that would be touching if squaring up were possible. If you can chose either edge to square up with you should be able to choose here as well.

RRG, pg. 11:
'If a unit is engaged only through the corner of one of its trays, the contacted edge is the edge to which the enemy unit would square up if able.'

Also keep in mind that any time a unit activates, if it is engaged with a single enemy unit but not squared up, it attempts to square up. This goes both ways. If one of those units that was blocking your single tray from squaring up moves, and allows that enemy to square up, they will square up with you. And it might not be along the edge you wanted, lol. So as things clear out, it is possible the units end up squared up.
